Why can't I replace a symbol with a new symbol of the same name?

Pewabic Detroit

Question

I am currently using Vectorworks 2023 on a Mac.

Previously, when I needed to quickly change a symbol shape I would just create a new symbol with the same name. Then all the symbols in the drawing with that name would change to the new shape. This is without going into 'symbol edit'.

For some reason the program is no longer allowing me to do this and I cannot figure out why. When I try to replace the symbol by simply creating a new one with the same name, it tells me that the symbol name already exists and that I need to choose something else.

What setting do I need to toggle to allow me to reuse a symbol name?

Basically, the behavior you are describing has always existed. However, I do remember last year or maybe the year before that there was a brief period when if you created a Symbol with the same name, a dialog opened telling you that and then asking whether you wanted to overwrite the old one.

For some reason, that functionality was removed. I don't know why because it was most welcome....
