How do I change default settings?

I'm brand new to Vectorworks so when trying to look up how to, I don't yet understand the language used for specific actions so this might seem simple but I just can't figure it out.

 

We've recently upgraded from an ancient version of Vectorworks and my colleague is running me through things to his basic level but we can't see where to set the defaults we'd like. How do I get the default shape fill colour to stay as 'none' and how can I set the pasteboard/grid area to be landscape?

 

It'll be no surprise if the answers are staring me in the face, but I just can't see them.

Set the default Attributes by selecting nothing in the drawing and setting them the way you want.  The same applied to setting the default Text font/size/style. Select nothing and set them from the Font menu.

 

Landscape/Portait is set in Page Setup in the File menu.  All Design Layers share a single Page Setup. Each Sheet Layer can have it's own Page setup and therefore orientation and page size.
