Hi, I am trying to learn point cloud data import into Vectorworks for buildings. Could some one point out to me articles or videos, tutorials for getting started on this. Which point cloud format works best with Vectorworks Are there any third party plugins needed to accomplish this. Can I get point cloud data for few single family homes to practice. I have VSS membership. Does it have any special offering for point cloud data processing. thanks Neelambari

I think it's important for VW to upgrade it's pointcloud visualisation machine. Lidar scanning increasingly becomes necessary for complex projects and renovations and it would be great if VW received larger files - perhaps deploying a LOD logic (don't know how unreal engine/Autocad/Recap does it, but large files run smoothly without downgrades). At the same time it's important to allow users to see pointcloud data well. The only usable mode is true colour at the moment - so one is limited by the quality of the lidar machine's camera. Autocad is extremely well made to receive and present pointcloud data and it would be a game changer for VW to allow the same level of visual performance. I am attaching a video of some scan data we made in Nicosia, Cyprus which are being shown in a preset Autocad colourscheme. I believe it shows how clear the depth is communicated - assisting the architect to model/draw efficiently around the data. Compared to the VW custom gre yscale colour-scheme that takes away all depth data:

Hi, i have a pointcloud as an "environment" but when i want to make a renderworks render of my project the pointcloud just renders in front of everything. (Even when it is "cut out", on sheet layers too.) Check the pictures attached. OpenGL shows the pointcloud good. Is this a bug or a feature? (It does this in VW 2020 and in 2021...latest sp.)

Hello All Does anyone have any experience with point cloud model? I have a file .pts (actually 3 as they are so big, 3gb each!) which imports great into VW17. I set it to import only 10% of the points, which is fine for me. My issue is that the point cloud model is imported a single entity which I cannot seem to convert into individual points (3d loci). This means I cannot click on one point in the model to gain info on its height. The only way around this is click a new 3d loci on the point i want information from. However this doesn't work as you have to view it in OpenGL so the 3d loci disappears! I have tried ungrouping , converting to 3d polys etc but it just gives me a bitmap and an object with nothing in it. I guess my question is, can you separate the point cloud model into individual points? Also, why do you have to view the model in OpenGL to see it? Many thanks. Paul

Hi. I've got a head scratcher: I have a laser scan of an existing stair rail, and I want to model closely what is there, so a new rail cap can be fabricated to fit. I can easily trace the edges of the wall in plan view, but when it comes to creating the sweep, I'm stuck. The highlighted object is a nurbs curve, which is reasonably close to the top edge of the existing wall, but doesn't follow the surface of the extrude, as it was drawn separately. The round wall tool works, sort of. If one were able to convert a polyline into a round wall object, then I could probably use the sweep degree to get reasonably close, but because the existing wall was handmade, it will never be exact. I'm imagining there is a way to project the nurbs curve onto the solid to trim it, but I'm not familiar enough with these operations to figure it out. If anyone can point me towards a tool or a technique for this type of geometry, I would appreciate it immensely!

Hi all I am lucky enough to get a chance to try out the Leica BLK 360 3D scanner. Quite an expensive bit of kit - but a friend is loaning it to me for a few days. My first venture into point clouds but am looking forward to giving it a try. If it works well - it could be a massive game changer for me - just not sure how good it is going to be, Does anyone on here have any experience with it already? Andrew
