    Redshift - FAQ

Redshift appears to support displacement mapping outside of Vectorworks. Is this functionality expected to be implemented in future releases?
  2. The grass color shader grows grass on the top sides of things. Is there a way to make the grass grow on all surfaces? Often i just make 2 of an object, with one upside down render them both, then turn the upside down one right side up and paste it so it occupies the same place the right side up object does just to cover the bald side. Otherwise it looks like things have strange emo haircuts. As an alternative question to reach the same end, I have been using the grass shader to make hair and fur type textures. Is there a better way to go about this. I played with the noise textures and the grass shader is just so much more convenient until i end up with a bald spot on a complex object.
  3. A little behind schedule, but I just attempted mine. It progressed to somewhere around 140% (so far that the progress bar filled all the way to the right, then started to be taken away on the left side) then dropped to around 70%, filled up to 90, then said it was done, then threw an error, then said it was installed and up to date.
  4. This just happened to me again. It is the end of the work day so I started publishing 24 pages of a pdf and 5 minutes in I notice I am missing some layer visibilities in a viewport on the first page. Now I wait for around 150 view ports to update so I can fix the problem or force quit Vectorworks and fix it now. There must be a better option. It would be so nice to be able to cancel fix my problem with a few keystrokes and start it over again.
  5. Thank you. When I can get back to my desk I will check on this.
  6. I tried to create a custom Redshift render style today, but was greeted with an error message that said my machine did not support Redshift. I am trying to figure out where I fall short. While I am certain that there are people out there with nicer machines than mine, mine is still pretty powerful. I think it should handle this without trouble, and if not should still work for CPU powered Redshift. Instead it says it will create the style as a Realistic style. I went to the Redshift FAQ in the forum here to try to figure it out and i should be fine. I am above all the recommended requirements. it recommends 16GB Ram; I have 128 it recommends i7 or xeon equivalent at 3.0GHz or higher; I have a Xeon W-11855M at 3.2GHz it recommends an NVIDIA GPU with CUDA compute capability of 7.0 or higher and 8GB of VRAM; I have an NVIDIA RTX A5000 (mobile) with CUDA compute capability of 8.6 and 16GB of VRAM. Are there other requirements I am just not finding or is there just a setting I need to toggle somewhere to enable Redshift?
  7. I repeatedly have this problem as well with purchased model assets, and the solutions are not consistent. Yes, putting the textures in the same folder as the obj and mtl makes it more likely to work, but it is not a guarantee. I have on a few occasions used Blender as an intermediary-- importing the obj to blender then exporting it back to obj and i have had some success with that when a direct import fails. Even so, the textures can become detached from the obj, or one of several effects will be transferred, but not all. Currently I am getting what appears to be the bump channel of a purchased model but not the color. When i try to manually drop the texture for the color back into the model, the mapping is not imported, so the texture just tiles instead. Any ideas that someone has would be greatly appreciated.
  8. I am certain that i am just missing something simple. I just downloaded and installed the plant imagery -3d photorealistic and stylized symbols form the package manager via the help tab. Now where can I access it? I went to the resource manager and the only plants and trees i am finding are the small package of proven winners that I think I have always had. I restarted VW and I restarted my computer wondering if it was something that needed to be triggered on boot or something like that. the package manager displays the content as installed now. What have I missed? Where should I be looking?
  9. I have been drawing in Vectorworks for well over a decade now, but my learning has mostly been self-guided and my foundation definitely has some gaps. I decided I should work my way through the Associate Certification on Vectorworks University to fill these gaps while I am between projects. However, the Associate Certification courses are all based in VW2021 it appears. Some of the topics revolve around information that is totally out-of-date. For example, there is a whole section on the snapping preferences that still refers to the floating snapping palette which has now moved to a permanent position in the lower right corner of the screen. Access to all the settings for this palette are not available via the path the videos refer to. This is the example that stands out mot in my mind, but I have noticed a couple of other instances where a menu or process in my software has not been the same in the example in the course video. I have a couple questions: Do the more advanced certifications also use the old software? I can work my way around any problems while watching some free videos on demand, but I have a hard time justifying spending money to attend a scheduled seminar and take a test if the information is not current. Is there a new version of the certification in the works? With all that said, I have always liked Vectorworks University. It has pulled me out of a lot of jams over the years. I have really enjoyed discovering all the elementary things that I never knew I could do and finding workflows that shave steps off of processes while working my way through the certification materials. I look forward to continuing to learn from it.
  10. Elgato has a triple pedal that i have been thinking about as well since i am already invested in a Stream Deck XL. In for a penny...
  11. Will do what I can. Unfortunately, this is huge file will a lot of layers, many of which I do not know much about. I am hoping after my current project with this is finished that I can turn cleaning the drawing into a freelance project. It has elements that have been imported from Rhino, AutoCAD, Sketchup, Solidworks, etc all drawn by different people over the course of a couple decades with no real file maintenance along the way. Each new drawing added its own layers and classes. Turning these off one by one has helped some, but it is still clunky. Most of it was done by people who don't know much about drawing other than making lines. Chunks of it have become 3D polys and NURBS even though it is strictly meant to be a ground plan. Parts of it were models that got dropped in because someone was too lazy to flatten to a plan view, but when they dropped it into place they also broke it down into all its constituent edges, so I cannot just manipulate the larger model. It is a mess. I appreciate your help.
  12. Looks like i managed to start a profile with a typo in it and i could not get back into it when I tried. Typing is not my strong suit today. Thanks! I will brush up on my German. I mostly only know how to order in a restaurant or shop at a hardware store. This will be new to me.🙂 I will look to see if my drivers are up to date as well. I would still love to see recommended settings, though, if anyone has a a while to post what is working well.
