I have had trouble with this as well, especially with walls. My only solution is to make sure that in the Atributes palette, with nothing selected, the line and fill type and colour are all selected for Class attributes - they should show the curvy arrow. Regards David W

dgruber Islandmon has given you the answer - in the classes menu in the top bar, you select the class you want to be the default class. From then on everything you draw or create will be in the class you have selected, so select None and that what you'll get automatically. Drake This has nothing to do with layers. Fsung Well, that's terrifically useful if you really want to run Photoshop 3.0 in Classic mode, but since a heap of other 3rd party providers aren't ready for OS10.4, some early purchasers may not even get off the line. From the Apple discussion board, there are problems for example with Logitech cordless mice and Retrospect backups, and as I run both those, I think it would be prudent to wait a while. I'd rather trundle along at the present speed than stall completely - Apple is a wonderful company, but notorious for less than perfect first issues. I seem to have found the solution, although I am not sure why it works. The None class did not have Use at Creation turned on. When I turned it on, I could re-assign classes to all objects I drew subsequently and they would display correctly. Somehow it now seems the characteristics of the class selected at the time you draw an object stay with it, even if you change classes. I'm still puzzled though - I'm sure I didn't change anything in any class between sessions on this file, so I still don't know why it wasn't a problem yesterday but it is today. Maybe Islandmon has the right attitude - do the workaround and carry on. Is there any reason to turn Use at Creation off for any class? David W Auckland, NZ iMac 17", OS10.3.9, VWA 11.5

Brendan My point is that I haven't changed anything. Sure I can make it look the same via the eyedropper or choosing a colour in the fill attribute, but it should be true to the class attribute. I don't understand why the fill can be white and be indicating that's the class colour when the class fill colour is red. I have restarted the program, and the computer, but no better. I just opened a file that I haven't accessed for a couple of days, to make some client requested adjustments. My default class is None with no fill, so when I drew a new wall, that's how it appeared. I changed the class to Wall-New in the OIP, expecting to see a dark red fill as per all the other new wallsin the drawing, but instead I got white fill. So in the OIP it says Wall-New, under classes Wall-New has a red fill, in the Attribute palette it says I have Class attributes selected, but that it is white fill. How can this be? I have played around with walls and objects I had drawn previously, and they all behave perfectly according to the Classes menu, but not new objects. Regards DW

Jim Thank you for your reply. All classes are on, on all layers. Under Layer Setup, I have the choice of any layer being Visible, Invisible or Grey. Usually they are set to Invisible, so I only see the layer I am working on, but if I click Grey on one layer, it appears grey if I am working on any other layer. At least up till now in all the time I have been using VW - suddenly in this one file it no longer works, I see only the active layer irrespective of which other layers I click Grey or Visible. DW

I'm working on a 2 storey house, and I want to show the ground floor layer grey while I work on the upper floor. Suddenly, this has stopped working - just on this particular file. I can still do it on other current files, I just go into Layers and click on grey for whichever layer I want to show, exit layers, and there it is. Have I accidently keyed in something that prevents this? Is there something in Preferences I should look for? VWA10.5 on 17" iMac

I have modelled a building which has one wing at 60? in plan. I can get elevations off the model for the sides at 0? and 90?, but how do I get a true elevation for the sides at 60?? DW VWA10.5, iMac running OS10.2.6

Katie, I back up with Retrospect to RW CD's, but I'm finding the number of CD's is starting to mount, even with compression, and the idea of backing up to an external & portable drive is starting to look economic. In addition, I archived a lot of projects to RW CD - when I tried to retrieve a file I found that I could open all files (Appleworks, etc) except VW files - I got this message "-61 No Write Permission. Attempt to open file - FS OPEN" which to me is gobbledegook. I eventually opened the file by dragging on to the iMac hard drive, and it opened normally. I agree with KRW, Tekton is a cool font. It's now called Tekton Pro, from Adobe.

I haven't had the problem of non working d&w tools repeat since I re-did the upgrade, so I guess the software just got into a tangle one time. The only problem I've had recently was when I opened a file to find that all the brick veneer walls I had drawn on a large house had mysteriously reverted to a 100mm (4") wall - fortunately I was able to recover a proper copy from my Retrospect back-up. So the lesson there is: back-up, back-up, backup!

Sorry about the time lapse between responses - I am in New Zealand, we're about 17 hours ahead of you, so our working days don't overlap much. I think I know what's going on - because I'm using the OIP to move the object, the dimension box I used stays highlighted (even after I click Enter), so I am actually copying the figure in the box, not the object itself. If I click Paste In Place, the figure is replaced by the same value, if I click Paste, the figure is added on, and the object moves twice the distance! So I have to click away from the object (or click on it again) to get out of the OIP, then use Copy and Paste or Paste In Place.

I used the Object Info palette.

Thank you for your responses so far. OK, I set up a new document and drew a line. You can either keep the line tool selected or deselect it. I moved the line an arbitrary distance, clicked Copy, then paste in place, then keyed in a new x location, and the original line moved, there is no copy. Is this supposed to happen, or is there something else corrupted in my installation? I recently had to do a re-install when the door & window tools stopped working.

Are you copying and pasting within the same document or across documents? Within the same document. What OS are you using? OS10.2.6, VW10.5. After you paste the object, what are you trying to do that isn't working? It's the copy function that apparently doesn't work, but I don't know it hasn't worked until I try to paste. Have you tried this with a new blank document or only existing documents? Existing documents. I start new jobs by duplicating a previous job and modifying it.

Having upgraded to an iMac running OS10.2.6, I am really disappointed with the print quality of the architectural drawings I now get from my Epson 1160 (USB native connection). I have the latest (and only) driver Epson put out for OS10x. Compared to prints I got from my old Mac running OS8.5, the quality now is lousy - lines are fuzzy, angled lines are much thicker than horizontal or vertical lines of the same width. If I go to 1440dpi, the quality is a bit better, but still not as good as the old system, and it is then so ssslllooowww!!! And I seem to have lost the ability to print in reverse order, which is a real pain. Epson don't seem to be very concerned about either of these problems, there is vague talk that people in Japan may be working on it, but noone can tell me when or if there will be a fix. Great customer relations. Is anyone else having similar problems?

Has the Copy command changed in the latest updates? Time was that you could Copy a line say, & then paste, or paste in place, or move, etc, at any time, now it seems that if you have already done something to or with an object, the program won't obey until you click away from the object, then click on it again. I haven't figured out which objects are affected, definitely lines, not text. I use menu clicks, not keyboard commands. It's really frustrating , because you don't know it hasn't registered until you hit move or paste and the original object moves instead of the copy.
