i would like to change the way the door schedule shows the size of the door. right now it shows 3 for width, 7 for height & .167 for thickness. i would like it to read 3'-0", 7'-0" for width & height then 1 3/4" for thickness. how do i do this? ok i figured out how to do the 3'-0 & 7'-0" but i cannot get 1 3/4" to show up. i keep getting 2"

i trying to create a 1" thick curved plaster ceiling for the bottom of a stair w/ a winder. this is what i get. what did i do wrong. object is 2 nurb rails and one nurb " 1 inch box" the top surface is fine but the bottom surface goes goofy

i have a parking lot that is an odd shape. it has smaller lots connected to it by small branch roads and a road that is a passenger drop off zone. i would like to keep it all one piece. each area may slope different from another area. it also has islands of plantings in various places. how do i show it on my dtm? i have the polygon all done.

i have not done this is a while. but i remember being able to do a sweep and then subtract from it. i could not do it yesterday. this is what i have. 4" thick by 72" diameter sweep. it is a lid (loci in center and profile offset 1/4" for a 1/2" hole in center) i have several 1/2" holes i want to cut in it. so i made the "dowels" 5" and made sure they intersected the lid. when i did a subtraction, the lid disappears and little pieces of the dowel are left. this happened even though i selected the lid as the "object to be subtracted from" i forgot to mention i did a revolve w/ rail and i could not get it to subtract at all. which gave me the idea that revolve allows no type of subtraction. what am i doing wrong? also, i can not do a single segment because the lid has various cutouts. nothing can be mirrored.

instead of having the forum the way it is, what if we were all some how connected with some type of skype thing. we could all wear head phones. it would be like "the Borg" just a flurry of communication. we would be true cybernetic organisms. i think we should go for it! : )

"Importing a class, like resources in the Resource Browser is a wish list item." good idea! they should also have the ability to be "referenced" and not just "imported" think about it. someone plots, it is reviewed and a decision is made to make the line "Hidden" a different dash type. one change to the master file updated all projects. if classes have the ability to be referenced then an office can have all jobs updated with the office standard. i am aware of the standards folder and have a file of our office standards in it. it's ok but not the same as referenced classes.

where can i get some shape files? i have a "map" project of a county in Vermont & New Hamshire and need to show towns, roads and road names for my base and then i will add my own info. any suggestions?

little changes during construction get an SK sheet. this is an 8.5x11 w/ a little title block. i copy an paste the view port to it and put an X over the original view port w/ a note like "see SK-1". i'm not crazy about this method but that is how they want it done were i work. if the whole D sheet gets changed then then we print a new D sheet "So I already have 7 or 8 ANNO layers..." this is not a bad way to do it. i have done it that way also. kind of the best of both worlds for plans at least.

your going to need annotated classes for every type of view port then. it can be done, i have drawn that way. this gets really complex if you have finish dims/notes, framing dims/notes, mechanical dims/notes, electrical dims/notes etc for errors with notes issue, our standard notes are symbols that everyone references from a master file. they are placed on the sheet layer (1:1) and not in the view port because of the scale issue. hence, eliminating duplication error. this now gets us into a master notes system which is another story. granted i have placed room names on design layers. however, i end up shuffling them around because sometimes they get in the way with dims & notes on the 1st floor plan sheet layer only to have them end up in the way on the reflc ceiling plan sheet layer or the mechanical sheet layer. i just use symbols so they can be in two different locations.

keep design layers clear of all annotations. viewports are singular "snapshots" of a part of the building that you want to say something specific about. no two viewports are going to convey the same annotated information, so how in the world can you put annotations in the design layer w/o having a way to turn off one type of annotation for another? keep design layers clean. the only text that one might put on the design layer are "design notes". notes that would help you remember stuff about the design. this would be turned off in the viewports.

i can not import shape files w/ just architect. as to Katie's comment, it seems that is the way things should be. wether we are dealing w/ a shape file or a 3d oven for our BIM model why not use objects that are produced by others as if they were referenced symbols. if i am doing a map and a road gets added to the original shape file all i need to do is click an update button and my VW map project is updated. or if a 3d oven model is updated by the company then my VW BIM gets updated.

can shapefiles be referenced directly from the web so any changes in the source file (on the web) will automaticly update in my file? i need to make a map of an area. the map will be viewported and have blowups. it would be cool if the map in my file could stay current w/ source w/o reimporting.

ok, what do i do when i work at home on some days and the office another? i have one printer at home and another at the office. i have (4) 8.5x11 all in a row. 4 different drawings on the same sheet layer. the printable area moves around when it recognizes another printer. that is why i avoid the whole margin issue and keep my page 8.5x11 and stay away 1/2" from lower right edge. what am i doing wrong?

i just make a custom paper size with no margins and then keep my title block away from the lower right edge 1/2" and everything works. no need to "reduce to fit to printer margins" the problem: draw too close the edge of the paper and make a pdf then print from the pdf, your image gets cut off. if you choose "reduce to fit to printer margins" then your scale is off. everybody knows this. why try to figure out what the printable area is for every printer made?

oooook, now that i understand what it is all about. my next big concern is how is all this 3d model information going to be presented in the 2d construction drawings? im willing to model every stud and have data attached but when i cut a section i need to see a rectangle w/ and x through it and concrete with a concrete fill etc. i heard revit allows one to "delete" a line in a viewport. it is not really deleted you can get it back. this is better than masking a line. i assume that parametric objects will fade out? would i not just go to a manufacture and get their door/data and insert it into my bim? same with everything else. most of the time we are just fitting together other peoples products. so they need to have 3d objects/data ready for download. currently i am finding it very hard just to get 2d cad drawings from companies.

can some one help me to understand how i will use this info? what will change in the way i draw?

thanks for all the input. now i can see how things work. i should provide some more clarification. i have VW at my home. the office wants to log into my home machine at the beginning of the day and stay connected until days end. they rarely control my computer, just observe. we stay in communication w/ skype all day. when the office is connected to my computer i notice that my computer seems to run a little slower. VW has a slight delay as well as opening other programs and files. could this be helped by a faster computer?
