Importing DWG - 'No points were found'

I'm new to using VW - I'm a landscape designer.

When importing a DWG from a surveyor, I'm hitting a problem in all of them (I have several that I've successfully used with SketchUp) when importing.

 

On the Advanced menu - Objects - I'm expecting to be able to import points as Loci. However, the box is greyed out and it says 'no points were found'. Eventually I found one DWG that 'found' points, but they were not usable when imported (it just imported the z-value text).

 

What might I be doing wrong, and also - what should I ask a surveyor for when commissioning a survey?
