i have never been able to get this to work. what am i doing wrong?

i wan to have the dtm shown 2 ways. one with 3d extruded contours and another way with smoothed. then when i adjust the master the snapshot updates its contours but keeps its look.

ok it works when the snapshot is on the same layer and pulled it off to the side but i need to have the dtm in the same location so i can turn it on or off depending on what look i want to present with my house mode.

if i have a white model then i need to have a DTM with 3d extruded or the dtm will be washed out BUT in color renderings i want a 3d smooth mesh look
