Texture troubles

I created a circle then extruded it 200mm to create a platform. Then I had to subtract another shape from it to create a custom platform. This worked fine, but...

Now that I try texture it I can only add a texture to the whole object, the "Part" drop-down is greyed out. All other extruded objects have a "top", "side", "bottom" etc.. So why doesn't my platform? How can I add a texture to the top (the floor of the platform) as another to the side?

Okay, the item is listed in the OIP as a "Solid Subtraction" whereas the other object are listed as "Extrusions". Is this why I can't apply a texture to its top surface? If so how do I make it so that I can?

Convert your Solid Subtraction to a Nurbs (Modify menu). It will actually be a Group of Nurbs Surfaces. If you then enter the Group you will be able to select and apply an individual texture to each of the surfaces.
