Barrel Dormer

Recommended Posts

Bill, Barrel Dormers (or barrel vaults) need to modeled from scratch as there is no built-in option for this sort of roof form.

But don't distress, it's pretty easy to do.

1) Create the walls for the sides of the dormer. Their bottom's can be "fit to" the roof below as desired, and the roof within the area of the dormer can be modified with a cut-out area.

2) Go to a FRONT view (of the dormer!) and draw a Closed Polygon which represents the section (or profile) of the roof itself.

3) Still in FRONT view, select to Polygon from step 2 and EXTRUDE (you can either set the "z" dimension or you can guess and then stretch it later...)

4) Go to TOP/PLAN view and find the new extrude (it'll be created at the drawing origin) and DRAG or MOVE it horizontally or vertically to place it over the walls from step one. If you hold down the shift key while dragging you will be constrained either along the X or Y axis.

5) Stretch or reshape the extrude so that the overhang is correct at the FRONT (barge) and so that the opposite end is overlapping the roof below at all points [to find the exact length you can switch to a SIDE view and measure the distance, then return to TOP /PLAN and make the adjustment.

6) OPTIONAL: If desired you can trim away the parts of the new extrude that protrude too far into the roof below by using the SOLID SUBTRACTION command. Of course in order to do this accurately you will need to determine the exact intersection of the two roofs. You might know the math to do that, or if you go to TOP view and RENDER in OPEN GL you can guesstimate it pretty closely.

Hope that helps.
