  1. I learned VectorWorks totally by myself clicking buttons and drawing. Every time I was in doubt I went to the help of the program (available as a .pdf file, installed by default) and I've always solved my doubts there. It's one of the easiest helps I've ever used. Eventually I have met other VW users and they had gave me some clues. VW is very easy, and in my opinion much easy to use than Autocad. But I haven't used Autocad too much so I can't make a detailed comparison.
  2. If you are running Mac OS X, you also can choose which software opens a file. Select the VW document, press comand and i (for getting info on the file) and there in the samll info windows, go to "open with" and select VectorWorks (application) instead of the viewer. Ther you can check the button that allows to open all this kind of documents with your preferred app,
  3. Tried with the installer again, nothing happened. Erased VW from the HD and all the preferences. Logged out, then logged in. Reinstalled VW. Downloaded the updater again. Run it again. Now everything went OK. Now "about VW" says it's 10.0.1 and when I get info it says it's 10.0.1 (14634) Strange... but now I'm happy Thanks for the feedback! 4. I hope it's not a beta version since it was buyed by my office. The updater didn't tell me nothing about creating a new folder and it did not. It just told me everything was succesfull and that I may change the name of the application folder if I wanted. I have no complains but I wanted to know if the updater actually updated my application or not. As I said, if I ask for info of the VW application, it appears it's version 10.0.0 (13282). Is this a beta then, the official 10.0.0 or it's 10.0.1? I never looked for this info before.
  5. I have just downloaded the 10.0.1 updater and run it, but when I go to "About VectorWorks" the screen tells me I'm running version 10.0.0 If I select the application icon and get info about it it says I'm running version 10.0.0 (13282) Did the updater work or not? I'm running Mac OS X 10.2.2 Thanks.
  6. I have just upgraded to VW 10 and everything has been OK, except sometimes the program slows down in a notorious way. I'm running Mac OS X 10.2.2 on a 400 mhz iMac with 768 mb of ram. I've trying to guess what happens and I have discovered that when VW is the front application, it uses almost all my CPU, so in the terminal, top shows my CPU 0,0% idle. It doesn't matter if I'm drawing or not, VW always uses about 60 - 70% of the CPU while Window Manager uses the rest. If I put the terminal in the front, inmediatly VW resources go down to 0 - 0,9% of the CPU. Why does VW 10 use so much CPU even if I leave it doing nothing for several minutes? Why does the fact of putting another app in the front make VW use so less CPU? Does the program do something very CPU intensive when in the front?
  7. I'm also having problems to print from VW under Mac OS X 10.2.1 Custom paper sizes do not work in either Epson Stylus Color 777 or Epson Stylus C40UX. If I use the driver included with Jaguar, I can configure a custom paper for "any printer", but my Epson print just an area equivalent to a letter page. If I use GIMP Print drivers, if I choose a custom paper the printer does not print nothing. In Mac OS 9 I'm able to print to custom sizes, but very slowly.
  8. I have the same problems with VW Architect 9.5.3 (final) and Mac OS X 10.2.1 on an iMac DV 400 with 768 mb of ram. VW crashes because of very small things, like moving a symbol, inserting a window in a wall or purging unused objects. The program runs well, and fast, but crashes unexpectedly. Some days nothing happens and others I got many crashes. Printing is VERY slow and under Mac OS X I can't print custom paper sizes in my Epson Stylus Color 777, it just prints the equivalent to a letter page, although a large page appears in page setup and in the screen. And in OS 9 I'm able to print custom sizes, but at an amazingly slow speed. I'd like to upgrade to VW 10 but if things remain this way, I think I won't.
  9. Thanks a lot for your replies. I have just discovered the final 9.5.3 updater is out, so I'm downloading it right now. Actually I worked under Mac OS 9 for a while and did there all the "crashing" stuff. Now I'm on X again and everything seems OK. I'm going to update to 9.5.3 final right now and will post in some days to tell my experience. Thanks again.
  10. I was working on a 8 MB file in VW Architect 9.5.3b2 under Mac OS X 10.2.1 when it suddenly crashed when trying to insert a simple window in a wall. I restarted the program and it always crashed in that action. I was not allowed to insert that window in that wall. It was a wall rotataed about 30?. I tried inserting another window or symbol in the same wall and they worked. I tried inserting the "fatal" window in an horizontal o vertical wall, and it worked. Why it crashed on a 30? rotated wall? I rebooted in Mac OS 9.2.2 and it worked perfectly. No crashes. I rebooted in Mac OS X 10.2.1 after performing this action and it worked fine, but it crashed when moving a symbol. This is the crash log: ********** Date/Time: 2002-10-14 20:09:54 -0300 OS Version: 10.2.1 (Build 6D52) Host: Hugo.local. 11. Hey! Thanks a lot for your ideas!!! That was what I was looking for. That makes things much easier. Thanks a lot! Hugo
  12. How do I apply hatches? Selecting an object is the only way? Can I apply a hatch to an area (clicking inside, as in Autocad) and let VW to automatically detect islands and fill it? Or do I have to draw a polygon over my area and hatch it? I ask because I have many complex (but closed) areas in a drawing, and I have to draw a polygon over them to hatch 'em because they are drawn by individual lines.
  13. Probelm solved!! just imported the file again and changed some setting and everything went OK.
  14. I'm using VW 9.5.3b2 in Mac OS X 10.2.1 and I just imported a DWG drawing from AutoCAD. Everything is OK but if I dimension any line or whatever, numbers do not appear. I can see the dimension lines but not the numbers. If I open a new file and draw a line, and then I dimension it, everything works. But if I paste the DWG (already saved as a VW drawing) I loose the numbers and again, everything I dimension appears without numbers, although Object Info shows it as a dimension. It seems the DWG has something that hides the dimension numbers. What can I do?
  15. I just installed spanish language files because I speak spanish; I live in Chile. But I suppose that's not the reason of those ....aki or ....ashi fonts in my computer. I'm almost sure Adobe apps added them, because I remember at the end of Illustrator or maybe Photoshop installation, those names appeared in the installer progress. The thing is I erased them and today I spent about 2-3 hours in VW Architect and it didn't crash. Those Adobe apps works perfectly after that erasing. Probably Matt was right and VW doesn't like that fonts (although they weren't available in the VW text menu).
  16. Matthew, I'm really sorry. I emptied my trash almost inmediatly, so I can't send you those fonts, but I can tell you all of them had japanese like names, ending in "oshi" or "aki" or similars. All of them had a .otf extension. I suppose they are japanese fonts, but they were never available to any of my Mac OS X apps (OS 9 not too). I have the doubt if they are Apple fonts for using Mac OS X in japanese, or Adobe fonts for working with japanese. I have installed Adobe Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, GoLive 6.0 and I also installed InDesign 2, but deleted it (although it may had add some fonts...). I do not know if it may be interesting, but sometimes GoLive crashes the same way VW does. Just suddenly. Actually they are the only apps that crash in my Mac. As I said, I only made a small test after erasing those fonts. I am waiting for a whole day of work in VW (maybe tomorrow) and then I will post again what happens. By the way, I may reinstall any of those Adobe apps to see if those fonts appear again. Where do I email those fonts if I find them? Thanx! Also, I was surprised that they were very big files, from 3 to 12 MB in size, so I erased a total of 100 MB approximately.
  17. Hi. Although I just made a test working with the problematic file, what I did may have fixed the problem. But I will be able to say it properly after many hours on the drawing. I run Disk Utility from Mac OS X 10.1 Install CD, and it reported no problems. I did it three times for being sure. I also booted in sinle user mode (command+S) and run fsck -y; also my disk appeared to be OK. Then restarted using Apple hardware test CD an run the extensive test. No problem found. Everything OK. Then I booted under Mac OS 9 and took a look in Mac OS X's fonts folder (because X woyld have told me those items were root property). The only fonts there were standard Apple fonts (arial, lucida grande, helevtica, etc.) and the fonts my Adobe apps has added (Myriad, etc.). I found very big ones with an .otf extensions which are japanese fonts. I threw them to the trash cause I don't need them and each other used up to 12 MB of size. Then restarted in X and the first thing I tried was open VWA and opened the drawing, and went to purge unused objects (what made me crash almost three times on monday!) and it worked. No crash. But now I'm working on another thing, so I think tomorrow I'll have many hours over that and I'll tell my experience. But I can't believe those japanese Adobe? fonts may be crashing VW. What a sensible app! Thanks all of you for your ideas. Hugo
  18. Thanks a lot Bruce for your ideas, I'll try them right now. As I said previously I have 384 MB of RAM, both DIMMS (256 + 128) are Kingston brand which I think is a good one. So I don't think it's a physical RAM problem, I think that either VW or Mac OS X are doing something wrong. PS 7 or Illustrator 10 use also lots of memory, but they become slower in hard work, but they don't crash! Thanks, again, I'll check my HD and reload VW.
  19. Well, I' can't afford more memory right now, and I really think it's not the problem. Apps like Photoshop or Illustrator work fine with 50+ MB files, even Corel Bryce or others. I think this is a VW problem, not RAM problem. Is anybody running VW with less than 384 MB of RAM? Does it crash to you?
  20. I have run several dik utilites, Disk First Aid; Norton Disk Doctor and Disk Warrior. I have even reformatted my HD, but the problem remains. And I do not think it's my computer the problem. VW and Adobe GoLive 6.0 are the only apps which crash. All my other software behaves very well, including Photoshop 7 and Illustrator 10 which are very memory hungry. I understand maybe 384 MB are not a too much, but I'm doing only 2D, not 3D work. And I can believe VW just crashes without any warning. In Mac OS 9 it used to say "one or more operations were aborted because not enough memory was available" . Now it just crashes? I can't believe. VW Architects requirements are this: Power Macintosh or greaterMac OS 8.6 or greater96 MB RAM200 MB hard-disk space for full install, 150MB hard-disk space for typical installCD-ROM Drive I have fourth times the required minimun of RAM. Do I really need more?
  21. All this week I've been working on VW Architect 9.5.2 under Mac OS X 10.1.5 (with all the updates) and VW crashes almost 10 times a day. This happens in different tasks, and sometimes just with the click of the mouse. The last crash happened some minutes ago, when trying to purge unused objects. The drawing I'm working on it's 7,9 MB of size and contains some images as background for the drawings. These are 6 .jpg images none bigger than 100 kb. This doesn't happen with all the drawings I do, but has happened to me other times (when using 9.5.0 and 9.5.1). I'm using a 400 mhz iMac DV with 384 MB of RAM. Some times other apps are running but others not. I think it has nothing to do with that. This has happened sometimes in Mac OS 9, but that freezes all the system, so I definitely prefer running in X; I loose much less time. But have never tested with this specific drawing under 9, just 10.1.5 I know Mac OS X saves a log file for the crashes, but it's in a language I can't guess what means. 22. Please, I need some ideas here! I can't work well with this... I can't belive my iMac is obsolete 1 year after I bought it! I must say scrolling is very slow, in both 9 and X.
  23. I'm using VW Architect 9.5.2 in a Mac, and I'm drawing a very simple plan with only polylines (the levels of a mountain). After many lines it has became very slow in redrawing, and when I'm drawing the lines they appear with a significant delay after I click. This feels like working in an old computer! I have an iMac G3 400 mhz with 384 MB of RAM. It's not a 2002 model but I bought it last year! It should run faster. This happens in both OS X 10.1.5 and 9.2.2, although in X it's worse. My V card has 8 MB of RAM, but I'm able to play many games, visual plugins and others, I can't belive some polylines can slow my computer so much! The file is 427 kb with 213 objects in one layer. I have 150 MB of RAM assigned to VW (in Mac OS 9) and it reports 135 MB free. So it's not a RAM problem. In X memory is supposed to automatically adjust. I also tried lowering the number of undos, from 20 to 10, but the slowness of redraws and the pan tool are the same. Please, any idea of making this go faster?
  24. I fixed it! I was typing the VW only serial number instead of the Architect serial....
  25. I forgot to mention that when updating to 9.5 the installer only asks for VectorWorks and RenderWorks serial numbers. It doesn't ask for an Architect serial. Is this correct or may it be the problem?
