  1. I use VW in my iBook G4 which has a 14" LCD screen and I'm very pleased with it. Specially coming from a 15" CRT iMac. Although the iMac screen was very good, the LCD feels and looks much better, much easier on my eyes. Everything looks crisp. If you can, go for it! [ 02-21-2004, 02:28 PM: Message edited by: Hugo ]
  2. Beaster, Thank you for your ideas, I'll have to try them. The thing is actually I'm working in drawings created by another person, so I'm not sure if enabling grid snap may confuse the things more. Maybe if I enable it anytime I move something it will snap to the grid and I will distort the whole thing more... But I'll try your suggestion when I start a brand new drawing from scratch. Thank you. Propstuff, Have you had this issue only with version 10.5.x or has it happened to you in earlier versions. This have been the first months for me using VW on a daily and intensive basis, so I've discovered this problem. I didn't notice this with VW 9.x but it may have been present too. Is there any preference I can adjust in order to gain precision? Thank you, Hugo [ 01-25-2004, 09:27 AM: Message edited by: Hugo ]
  3. In the last months I've working all the week, all day long with VectorWorks 10.5.1 in a new job I got. We are making three houses and we use VW for drawing plans, elevations, sections and some 3D models. This has been my most "intensive" work with VW. I've been using it since the university and now that I'm already an architect it is my main tool. The thing is now that I'm doing serious work with it I need to draw with absolute precision. There are some issues we are having at the office (my boss and me, we both use VW 10.5.1 under Mac OS X 10.3.2) and I need some advice. In the university I didn't care too much, I drawed trusting in the smart cursor. When I extended a line and "center" appeared in the screen when getting to the center of a line, I was sure my line was going to join the other on it's center. Or when "point" appeared, the line was going to touch the other exactly in that point. But now I have found that many times this is not as precise as I want. A line that was supposed to join another in it's center, it's really not touching the other line. They are almost touching themselves, but if I zoom in I can see a noticeable difference. They are just milimeters, and if I print the drawing, it will look good anyway. But it is NOT exact. Other times I click on the polygon tool and start drawing besides another one. In some places, I want their vertex to be the same. So when "point" appears, I click hoping they will share that vertex. But when finished, if I zoom in I discover the vertex are not the same. The same has happened when dimensioning. Specially when using the chain dimension. I click on both caps of a wall, but the dimension measures slightly different. If I zoom, I can see the "point" where I clicked was not really the begining of the wall. It was just milimeters from it. Why is this happenning to me? This matches with the fact that I changed my old iMac G3 for an iBook G4 and that I also changed the Apple Pro Mouse for a Microsoft Wheel Optical Mouse. Could the mouse be the problem? I have noticed some odd behaviour in other apps too, like web browsers. Sometimes I click on a link and nothing happens and I have to click again. Or are this some known problems in 10.5.1? I'd like any opinions on this thing, or suggestions on how to draw more precisely. Thank you
  4. Propstuff, THANK YOU very much for the plugin!!! It is EXACTLY what I was looking for... AWESOME!!! Hugo
  5. Thank you Katie, for your almost instant reply! I'll try your suggestions and see which one is best for me. Thank you again, Hugo
  6. I'm using VWA 10.5.1 under Mac OS X 10.3.2 and I have several paralell lines I would like to extend to a single perpendicular line. I use the Connect/Combine tool in order to extend each line, one by one. But I would like a faster way to do this. Is there any tool/way to extend all the lines with only one operation? It is very tedious to click on each line and go to the perpendicular and again and again and again... Thank you, Hugo
  7. Hello, this is my contribution for making VW a better app... hehe I have found two bugs using VWA + RW in an iMac DV 400 with 768 Mb of RAM. 1) When accidentally I opened VW in my new iBook, a message appeared in the iMac telling me I couldn't use the serial number in two machines.OK. It asked me to save before quit, and I did so. The two files that were opened and supposedly saved at that tine got corrupted and turned into 0 Kb (they had 4 Mb of size before that). I lost them. I recreated the situation again and sometimes it happened, and others didn't. Very strange but DANGEROUS. 2) I created a custom workspace for myself and sometimes when switching from the single line tool to double line tool or the inverse, the single line tool button becomes gray and the line (of the button) disappears. Not a serious thing, but looks like a poor software error!!! That is it. I would also like to post a very big improvement for me since 10.5. VW has never again crashed to me, and I used to have frequent crashes before. Since 10.5, absolutely none. CONGRATULATIONS!!! Now I have sold my loyal iMac and I will do all my work in my new iBook G4, I hope the good behaviour will continue. Thank you, Hugo I forgot to post that I'm using Panther, now at 10.3.2 [ 12-17-2003, 09:59 PM: Message edited by: Hugo ]
  8. I'm running Panther and VWA 10.5.1b in my iMac DV 400 with 768 mb of ram and everything runs great. Panther is faster than Jaguar and VW runs very smooth, I have had NO crashes. Very good. I also use Gimp print drivers in order to print large sizes in an Epson Stylus Color 1520 with no problems. Great thing! [ 12-07-2003, 10:34 AM: Message edited by: Hugo ]
  9. To make the thing simple, I want to draw with some colors on the screen, and print with others. This others are not only black, I want some color hatches, so black and white only is not useful for me in this case. Any idea? I tried that thing of the workgroup but couldn't figure it out. It seems complex for what I need.
  10. Is there a way I can assign colors to classes, and save that, and switch between "color sets"? What I want to do is work with a black background, with every class with a different color, but when printing I want to set the white background and most of the classes black and a few with color. Actually when I have to print I wait until the drawing is finished and then I go to the classes window and change all the colors to black, but this is very slow, and if I want to have a print preview in the middle I have to change all the colors in order to print and then again to continue working. I've tried with sheets but no success. Is there any way to do this? Thank you. Hugo VWA 10.5 Mac OS X 10.2.8 768 MB of ram
  11. I know that, you are right. But I'm working together with other people and they have decided to draw the swing lines straight, not rounded. It is just an aesthetic consideration, just wanted to know if it was posible.
  12. Katie, What I'm trying to do is having the swing line straight instead of round, in a top plan view. Thanks. Hugo
  13. I need to change the door projection line from the standard round one to a straight 45? line. How can I do this? I can't find the option in the Object Info palette. VWA 10.1.2 Mac OS X 10.2.6 Thanks!
  14. Any Mac user over there to share experience in this?
  15. I'm using VW Architect 10.1.2 in Mac OS X 10.2.6 with all updates, latest Quicktime, etc. My computer is an iMac DV 400 Mhz, 768 MB of ram. I have discovered a problem that I didn't notices before, altough it's been present since 10.0.1 Working in my drawings, i go to the Objects palette, click on Door and then Door preferences. There I choose the width, and change the config between cased opening, swing simple or swing bipart. I press ok, and when I'm over a wall, I click at the insertion point, and I get the previous kind of door instead of the one I just chose! If I go to door preferences again, I see that the door config didn't change, and I try to change it again. I discovered that at the first try it doesn't change, I have to insist 2 or 3 times in order to get the change. Is this a bug or what? [ 07-13-2003, 05:50 PM: Message edited by: Hugo ]
  16. I'm thinking on upgrading my iMac (a 400 mhz iMac DV with a 10 GB HD and 768 MB of RAM) to a newer Mac. I'm an architect who uses VectorWorks 10 for work, among with other apps like Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia FreeHand, Dreamweaver and Form Z. My iMac, although very loyal and capable of doing all what I need, is feeling a bit slow, specially when doing more than one thing at once. I'm using Mac OS X 10.2.6 and thanks to multitasking I can work in several things at the same time, but I want more speed. Looking at the eMac, it looks like a great thing. All in one, saving space. A 17 inch monitor capable of higher resolutions than my iMac. 1 Ghz Power PC G4 is doubtless much faster than my 400 Mhz G3. A bigger HD, and a 32 MB video card instead of my 8 MB. A 7200 rpm HD instead of my 5400 rpm's. Sounds very good. My doubt is if a 1 Ghz eMac will be enough for my needs or if definitely I should buy a PowerMac? I like to do lots of things and learn new apps and all that, but I do not plan to upgrade all the time. Just want a fast computer, I'll put more RAM onto it and start working. Don't have too much money to spend too. I'm tempted to go for the 1 Ghz eMac and add some 512 MB of RAM. Or should I wait a bit for new PowerMacs and maybe new eMacs with DDR RAM and all that? Are those things noticeable for working with VectorWorks and 3D? Anybody here using an eMac and have some opinions to share? Lots of thanks. Hugo Mujica, from Chile.
  17. Katie: Thanks for answering! Most of the time I run VW 10.0.1 along with Mail, MSN Messenger and Safari (or IE before Safari appeared). Other times VW is the only running app. Almost never I run VW with Photoshop or Word. I think the crashes can happen randomly. What I forgot to mention is that evrytime it's going to crash, I know it will, because the program gets sudenly slow and the HD makes a noise (as if I was saving a file or something like that)
  18. Just change the units and everything becomes normal... I suppoose this is a bug.
  19. Sorry, I've been posting a lot in the last time, but I have had some problems. A week ago one of my drawings turned into a 0 kb file and I had to redraw almost everything. Now I'm backuping in a separate folder to prevent something like that again. Now I'm not happy because VW Architect 10.0.1 still crashes about three times a week. Of course it's the app I use the most so it's obvious I see more crashes than in others, but thius thing bothers me. VW is the only app that crashes constantly in my system. I also use Photoshop 7 and MS Office, along with Safari, Mail and iTunes and all of those apps never crash. This crashes happen at any time and generally I'm doing very easy tasks at that moment, like panning or zooming, or just drawing a line. It happens with any file open, not only with a special one. I'm getting a bit crazy and saving almost every minute, but I think something is wrong here. I erased and reformatted my HD about 1 month ago and everything has worked great except this random crashes. Otherwise VW runs fast and nice. I'm using an iMac DV 400 mhz with 768 MB of RAM, under Mac OS X 10.2.3 Here are the crash logs, thay may be useful to catch the problem, or not? ********** Date/Time: 2003-01-13 17:29:28 -0300 OS Version: 10.2.3 (Build 6G30) Host: Hugo.local. 20. Katie: I have Energy Saver to never sleep, but I have selected to put the HD to sleep whenever posible. Anyway, I already rebuild my drawing over an older backup, but I'm afraid this may happen again.
  21. CipesDesign Thanks for your input, but I already made a search on my HD and nothing appear. I even restarted, run Disk First Aid and repaired permissions, but my file remains in 0 kb. At least I have some previous backups and now I put VW to automatically backup in a separate folder (instead of autobackup over the same file). But makes me worry about what may happen in the future. Thanks anyway!
  22. Last night I left my computer on while I went out, thinking I was going to work later, but when I came back I decided not to. I pressed command + q and Vectorworks (10.0.1) asked me to save all of the open documents (4). I said yes to each one , VW quit and then I shut down my iMac. Today when I try to open one the 4 files, I get a message telling me this: "This is an unrecognized file. It may be a VectorWorks file created by a newer vesrion of the application, it may be a very old MiniCAD file, it may have been created by another application, or it may have been corrupted by a hardware or system error." I went to the file and it's size is 0 KB!!!! Yesterday it was about 5 MB of size. How can this happen??? All my work of days was there. I haven't done nothing special. The file appears modified at 4:50 am, the same time as the other three files I saved when quitting VW. So the error must have happened then. But everything seem to be good. Is there any chance I can recover that file? I didn't backup yesterday, and it was a lot of work. This is a serious bug!!! I'm runing VW Architect 10.0.1 under Mac OS X 10.2.3 in a 400 mhz iMac DV, 768 mb of ram. Please help me!
  23. I see my initial post has became a hot topic in the last days... Katie, after upgrading to 10.2.3 I can see a speed improvement and VW runs quite good on my iMac (400 mhz, 768 MB of ram). Anyway, VW 10.0.1 still uses most of my CPU resources when working or when idle. Can this cause a damage to my computer as time passes? I use VW almost daily, all the day.
  24. I'm actually working on a 400 mhz iMac with 768 mb of ram and VW runs perfectly well. But I need some mobility and been thinking on upgrading to a new 800 mhz iBook, which has a 32 mb video card (Ati Radeon) instead of my modest 8 mb Ati Rage 128 pro. Also I think that an extra 400 mhz could be a nice thing. I can't afford a Powerbook G4, but I also do not need so much power, so I think the iBook can be a perfect choice. My only complain is that a 12.1" screen may be a bit small, but at 1024 x 768 I'll have the same workspace as in my actual iMac. Also, VW won't be the primary use of this iBook. And I can connect an external monitor some times. But I will be using it many times, and I wanted to have some feedback about this. I read some comments about poor Open GL support under Mac OS X for the previous Rage cards that equipped some iBooks. Has this been corrected with the actual Radeons? I have had no issues with my 8 mb Rage 128 Pro on my iMac, so I think I will be screaming with the 32 mb Radeon, or am I wrong? [ 12-25-2002, 12:13 PM: Message edited by: Hugo ]
  25. ... instead of a box resembling the shape? When I drag a group or polyline I only see an area equivalent to the object, but not the object. Is there any option to see what I'm dragging so I can draw more precisely? Thanks, Hugo
