  1. I have the climbing equipment... and of course I"m a natural...
  2. Yes...I admit I'm over a barrel on this one and have no reply...it is valid...Here is the thing... I cannot see myself stopping the use of the cloud and go back to old ways.. I cannot see myself stoping the use of my smartphone...& going back to a land line. (I have been turning my phone off for 12-24hr a few times during the week as a test) Unless I just plain get out of the business... I guess we are just trading one set of problems for another... There is this guy that rides around on his bicycle and he carries tree climbing geared and hand saws...all on his bike...He is an arborist. With very low overhead. I'm starting to think in that direction...
  3. Interesting, I happened to watch a Snowden interview, had thoughts of dumping my smartphone and getting a land line...even thought of dumping my whole cad business with thoughts of removing stumps for a business...(I removed a stump over the summer and it was quite peaceful) So I'm basically being tracked by big tech, NSA & now the CCP?
  4. As you all know I'm a big fan of Cloud everything. Been using for 3 years and its virtually flawless...collaboration, no version update headaches, absolutely super! I personally feel that I have debunked all the issues thrown at me. However, politics aside, am I now held hostage by these cloud companies who can shut me down if they decide to? Example: If I want to use my cloud services to make signs that say "The emperor has no clothes"...will I get shut down for going against popular opinion? Still a big fan of the cloud but you have me over a barrel on this one and I have no reply...its a valid concern... I guess nothing is really safe...
  5. The 10hrs to make a 2d existing conditions drawing from the hand sketch...there were dims that were unclear in the hand sketch done by the architect...we had a lot of head scratching as to the meaning of what he sketched...somethings did not add up...If sketch was clearer then this 10hrs could have been less. Everything else was straight forward as everything was direct modeled...no parametric... Had I used parametric then there would have been a lot of data entered into the OIP but not all of that data would benefit detail drawings... Then I would have had to add in 2d patching to my vps... and constant fiddling... I have a architectural project on the horizon that will test my "direct modeling no parametric" method...(I'm sure it will take a beating in some areas) When we type in data to the OIP for a parametric we need to ask ourselves "what does this actually get me in the way of my views & details?" If the top view looks great but the side view or section is bad then what was the purpose of using the OIP? Also thinking of not using Top/Plan for the plan but using a section cut to get the plan...this will make all my views look the same...we will see Now if we want place holders with a general shape then ok use the parametrics... but for some reason the architect I have done work for has this "shop drawing" mentality and likes everything spelled out...of course all his stuff is high end residential...
  6. Valuable information...just the thing that will give me a leg up on the competition.
  7. everyone seems to be lugging around these Excel spread sheet all independent silos...
  8. for some reason I'm feeling the "build it and they will come" voice... doing this on my own time if you send me your email that you use for your OpenBOM account I will invite you in...(I cannot promise everyone will get in) more columns could be added...for other stuff...
  9. now if you compare the level of detail for the existing building to the level of detail of the balcony you will see that the have a similar "weight" of detail... the existing building was 5hrs to model and the balcony was 6hrs...this is consistent direct modeling that will produce 3" details.
  10. If you asked me "how much time does it take to drill a 1/2" hole in a 2x4?" I will not tell you "~1 min". I will factor in: loading up the car driving unpacking gear getting set up (drop cloths, safety glasses, etc) layout of the center punch mark for drilling setting up drill drilling the hole pack up the tool clean up area clean my way out of the house (did I make a mess?) set the alarm drive home unpack gear plug in batteries to chargers document the work & file for invoicing At this point I am free to work on something else & that is when the time for that job ends... So the time it takes to do something is the total gross time vs net time...It's the total time you are occupied by the task...
  11. while I was not there for the existing conditions field notes...I would assume ~6hrs. This would include general drive time. It seems like it would tie up a person most of the day if you sent someone out to do that...they would leave at 8am then back by 3pm...could be wrong...but that is my gut feeling
  12. please explain...as I thought factor meant 10hrs x factor of 10 = 100
  13. always trying to understand the time it takes...
  14. an Idea. if you have a lot of VW work but also have sub components that need fabrication drawings then you can use Onshape for the fabrication drawings there by freeing up your VW people to stay focused on the big picture...I can invite you into a sample Onshape doc and show you around just send me your email. this is like concrete and steel...when you add them both then you have a better product...an office that can do architecture but also a side that can do fabrication drawings for key items that you want to control...
  15. Thanks zoomer, I do get it...yes when VW first showed a VW running in a browser, the first thing I said was "that is a dumb idea" now, I am running 2 different cad systems in my office... the cloud side is: easy to add new people I never stress about hardware, software, operating system collaboration is in real time I can let people review and comment on a model but not allow them to copy it. compare that to: expensive to add in new people (I need to buy them the latest hardware, software, operating system) Im in a state of upgrade stress starting in August to Dec 1st (I upgraded to VW2021 SP1 then did a batch convert) absolutely nail biting. collaboration with just me and the other person is ok (its just to 2 of us) we message on Skype..."I'm want to open this...is that ok?" I cannot let people review the model so this requires release of pdf booklets & management of booklet (the above is also similar to my friends feelings who works with Solidworks. this is not a VW issue) So I'm living this...this is not theory...but I do understand what you said...
  16. Importing/Exporting for collaboration is fundamentally flawed...every time we get involved with this it's like having a baby (ok I never had one but I think you get the point) Very disruptive and takes a lot of time and if Im doing this every week...exporting my stuff and then importing their stuff...that chews up a whole day... and its always a nail biting operation... this whole concept of having our stuff on a computer that sits in our room is anti-collaberation...yes there are work arounds...all noble attempts to fix old paradigms.. this is not a VW problem, Revit is not really cloud base because they have a check in check out gimmick that does syncing...this is not a true Google Doc operation. I'm about to add my 3rd person to my Onshape* side and moving as much of my VW fabrication drawings to that 3rd person...I'm slowly moving away from training anyone else to be a VW operator as it is too complicated to set someone up...(software, hardware, Operating system) VW will only be used to assemble all the fabrication drawings onto the site... it would not matter if i was using Revit either...all these architectural programs are based on old paradigms.. Solidworks has the same problems as it resides on your computer...PLM is a mess.. *using it for 3 years and flawless in its collaboration. I have experienced the future for 3 years.
  17. so lets think about the above...I did that some time ago...but I would be willing to share it (if that were possible) to everyone. then you all could add in your own stuff...my stuff could be used but not modified...so the permissions I would set would be: view only general view only specific (this would be a box that I would place and you could only roam around in that box) copy (that means you could copy and modify) edit admin edit
  18. I think that the cad universe should be good looking and fun...something that compels you to "play" as if it were a 3d game...then people would be using it for everything and not just architecture...I wish it was cloud base then we could invite people in for fun...as in "I made this universe come on in an play..." someone is selecting a piece/pawn to move
  19. So what I like about VW is its ability to do stuff that's beyond architecture...
