Create Site Model from Mesh 1.0.0

About This File

This is a Marionette network that converts a mesh to 3D locus points. This is very useful for converting meshes of terrains imported into SketchUp from Google Earth into Vectorworks Site Models. Once you have a SketchUp mesh, import it into Vectorworks and give the mesh a name. Take the wrapper in this file and place it in the same drawing. Change the name of the mesh in the OIP of the wrapper to the name you gave the SketchUp mesh. Raising the number of the grid density will make your site model more accurate, but it might take the wrapper up to a minute or two run. When you run the script, you will get a group of 3D loci. Ungroup the loci, and keeping them selected, go to AEC -> Terrain -> Create Site Model... (in the Architect Workspace). Choose your settings and click ok

Hi Sarah

What an excellent resource this is! Thank you so much for putting it together. It's something we're often asked for, and our customers will really appreciate this tool.

Users just need to bear in mind that this will create a rectangular grid of points from the top left of the mesh's bounding box, to the bottom right. So, you may end up with points you don't need, and will have to remove those before creating the site model.

Very cool!

I will come back and amend this review once I see if I can get it to work for my specific use case, but it's still a 5-star script. I just want ot come back and note it's limitations. I have been looking for ways to turn an obj mesh into a terrain without doing a whole bunch of crazy steps. I wanted to skip Sketchup and bring my terrain mesh in from my photogrammetry software to develop a DTM in VW. with as large as my meshes are, I don't think this script is going to cut it, but i was able to bring in plenty of meshes in the 5-digit poly range.

i've been letting it chug on my 75M poly mesh for some time, and I'm not sure if it is just competely hung at this point. haha. But i do not fault the script, as it is clearly stated it was deveoped to bring in SU google earth tiles which are very low poly.

Anyway, cool script! thanks for making it!
