Guest
Is this an import dwg file from AutoCAD? Quote Link to comment
jan15
I don't think DWG files can include photos, in the way that VectorWorks does. They can reference image files, which works the same way as Xref'ing another DWG file. And, as with Xrefs, the reference only works if the referenced file is in the same file path it was in when it was originally referenced, which is impossible when you copy it to another computer. That's why Xref dwgs should always be bound before sending a DWG file to another office. But I don't think image files can be bound. So ask your colleague to send the image file, and just insert it, or copy and paste it, into your VectorWorks file. Quote Link to comment
Thom
The photo was inserted into the dwg. I do not know if this makes a difference. Quote Link to comment
jan15
It doesn't matter how the image was put into the drawing. Autocad only puts it on the screen, not in the DWG file. The only thing in the DWG file is a reference, like "D:\Projects\Salamander_Development\Main_Office\Photos\Front.jpg", and some numbers indicating where and how big to display it. When Autocad opens the DWG, it looks in that location for that image file, and if it finds it, displays it on-screen as if it were part of the DWG file. If you were to open the DWG file in Autocad on your computer, you wouldn't see the image. You'd see a rectangle with "D:\Projects\Salamander_Development\Main_Office\Photos\Front.jpg" written through the middle of it. In order to see it in Autocad, you'd have to get the image file from your colleague, put it on your hard disk, and go into the Image Manager window and give it the new path to the image file. Just one of the many joys of working in Autocad. Luckily, you use VectorWorks. So all you have to do is get the image file from your colleague and Copy and Paste it into your MCD file, and then not think about it any more even if you give the MCD file to someone else or delete the image file from your disk.
