The ability to fix the profile of an Extrude Along Path with respect to its path is really great… when initially creating an EAP. After that, it's all downhill, as editing EAPs with fixed profiles is a nightmare. Nine times out of ten, even if one is creating what ultimately would be legitimate geometry, it's impossible to get from the path to the profile, or vice versa, without getting trapped by (what's really just a temporary...) failed solid. I wish there was a much more capable, intuitive method for editing EAPs with fixed profiles (rather than having to pay careful attention to the path's origin and direction, and, having done that, then often having to relocate the EAP itself...).
