I just came upon a situation where a detail cube could come in handy: I now make a full terrain on one layer, and one that only goes up to 2m around the building on a different layer. This is for viewing purposes and making my needed viewports easy. If only I could use such a detail cube, I only have to make one layer with the full terrain, and use such cube to have only the piece of it with the model I need for making my views.
