Rendering Glass

I am having trouble getting the glass texture to pick up light. I would like a piece of glass to appear side-lit by a lighting instrument, but it doesn't seem to pick up the light.

Is there a way I can tweak some settings to get the glass to pick up more of the light?

I am creating a sconce, and I would like to give the effect that the light is being emitted through the glass.
