Locked Dim Error Message

Why do locked dimensions produce the stupid error message every time you click on the dimension line (not the extension line)? I'm NOT trying to move it. I'm not click-dragging -- just simple clicking. I don't want to click on its extension line because other dimensions share it. This is very annoying.

Yes. The stupid error message is "selection is locked," which I already know. I'm NOT trying to move it. Other objects, when simply selected, DO NOT put up this error message. The error message normally shows up ONLY when you try to move it. It's annoying and it's slowing me down. I always keep the OI palette open on my second monitor, so I just need to glance there to see if an object is locked or not -- no need to interrupt my work with that stupid error message! What's so different about dimensions?

Why not improve the user interface so that work can be accomplished quicker and more efficiently?

Since grabbing a dimension by the dimension line allows you to modify the offset of the dimension from the object (i.e. the witness line length) and not move the dimension, VectorWorks must assume you intend to modify the object when you select it by the dimension line (shown by the fact that you only see the resize cursor, not the selection cursor).

I agree though, this is bad. You might just want to select a locked dimension without modifying it to get info about it, or to copy it to the clipboard. You shouldn't have to respond to the "locked" dialog unless you try to move the dimension after selecting it.

There is a work-around though. Just select the dimension by "option dragging" across the dimension line and you won't get the "locked" message.

Kenneth,

I'm not sure what you are referring to. What error message? Do you get an error message stating "The selection is locked" when you click on the dimension? If so, then the error message is simply a standard pop-up reminder. It is there to remind the user that they locked a section.

If you are receiving another error, please call Technical Support or e-mail Tech Support so that more information can discovered to resolve the issue promptly.

Thanks for the suggestion. However, I could simply click on either of the extension lines if my drawing wasn't so cluttered with other dimensions SHARING the same extension lines!

I think the general solution would be to introduce a preference to switch OFF those error warnings (they're not even dialogue boxes!), replacing them with an audio beep or something, and allow the experienced user to continue drafting like gangbusters.
