Red truss in rendering

OK, so I realize that Spotlight will show a piece of truss in red if it does not fit into the 'connection interval' size. My usual fix for this is to change the 'connection interval'. You cannot, however, make the connection interval less than 2'10" (or can you?).

My problem is that these trusses show up as red in all my renderings, even if I have a fill and a metallic texture assigned to the truss. it looks odd to have a red 1'x1'x1' corner block sitting in the corner of a truss structure.

Any fixes or work arounds?
