Importing a .laz lidar survey file into vectorworks - results in instant programme crash

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I've been trying to import a DEFRA point cloud survey file into vectorworks unsuccessfully for a while now, previously didn't have an issue with other .laz files which imported okay by just dragging and dropping.

Vectorworks just shuts down immediately as soon as I click okay to import the file via the point cloud import, or as soon as I let go on the drag and drop.

It gives an error message saying EXC_BAD_Access (SIGSEGV) and KERN_INVALID ADDRESS with an exception code: Namespace SIGNAL, code 11 segmentation fault 11.

If anyone has any suggestions or tips on what I could try, mystery to me as to why I can import other .laz files but not these ones.

Thanks

Robert

There are a lot of point cloud formats Vectorworks won't open for various reasons.

A good way to see if the data is valid is to open it in QGIS.

If it works in QGIS, but not VWX, you could try to contact VWX technical support for some help.

Or

You can reexport the .laz from a point cloud editing program and see if that fixes it, which it always does if you can open the original file.

Thanks Jeff,

We can open it in QGIS and it's fine. It's odd since I can open other .laz files without any trouble - but these ones I've downloaded recently are no go.

Re-exporting is something I could try, if there's a program you can suggest one I can download or if there might be a service online?

Thanks for the quick response - how do I contact vectorworks technical support?

No problem.

I use Autodesk Recap.  There are lots of other choices out there too. Metashape, Pix4D, Meshlab, etc…

if you have Service Select, they should have provided you a premium tech support contact.  Otherwise, I believe the website has a general number/email.

There are some point clouds that just choke VWX for some reason.  Your post reminded me of this old thread of mine:
