  1. You do not unlock the WGRef, but the layer linked WGRef. Highlight the linked layers, go to Edit/Unlock. What I do oif there are several linked layers is group them immediately after unlocking. Then you are good to goo w/moving, flipping, rotating, etc.

The only other way is to 'kill' the WGRef by removing it within the WGRef dialog box, but keeping it in the document. Downside- it is no longer updatable...

  2. We have successfully opened and worked in files across our network. The 4k files are probably the result of your backup software copying a file that is open. What would happen is our backup software would update the latest files while we worked on them. Since it could not do this, we were left with 4k files that overwrote the real files on the server. We quickly abandoned this and now work across the network on files with no issues...

  3. I agree with archoncad, I also do not like to put annotations in viewports. If the file gets corrupted, all that info is lost during rescue. I conceptually view (pun?) the Sheet Layer as strictly presentation tools within each file. Except for crops, all the info going to the sheet is done on design layers.

What I do is create a 'Notes' layer where I know I will be using viewports. This layer can be used with layer links as well if there is a scale change.

What you might consider doing is creating a template.sta file for your details with all the proper settings and info, and using that for each project. You can WG Reference the titleblock layer from you project file. Or, maintain a master detail file for all your work, knid of like a databse for details that grows with your practice.

That eydropper tool is something, though...

  4. This happened to us some time ago when we copied files from the server to network servers. What would happen is our backup software would update the latest files while we worked on them. Since it could not do this, we were left with 4k files that overwrote the real files on the server. We quickly abandoned this and now work across the network on files with no issues...

  5. That would be difficult to do, especially in a drawing file where the same symbol is used multiple times on a single, or multiple, layer. How would the context work in editting a symbol that is in two different places in a file? The nature of symbols is that they need to be editted in isolation. Yours is an interesting question, but I have never heard of that features before.

Too many workarounds, I think, is a good theing for VW, by the way!

  6. Actually, George, photography in the NYC subway was never illegal. Just the police thought so. The MTA considered enacting a law for such activity, but the volume (written and audible) of response made them reconsider. I always took photographs, even after 9/11 because I knew this. I was never hassled, although my friend was approached by some freindly officers because he was sketching in an elevated station- seems the booth clerk thought he was 'drawing the subway system'. I gues thats what all those free maps are for...

Anyway, I digress. It seems all the VW chat is really about addtions and remodels to homes, right? Its not worth all the fuss, as I mentioned. There is nothing wrong with a DIYer playing with his/her own home, right? DIYers can't compete with professionals once they enter the commercial areas, since we are now dealing with life safety issues.

  7. Lets see if i can put this in perspective (pun... you bet). I am going to make a large, but realistic, presumption here that this is referring to residential projects only, specifically single and two family dwellings. Most states have some sort of exemption in their codes (usually a UCC or ICC code), that allows the building owner to do his or her own drawings. As a licensed professional, I feel obligated to tell people- potential clients included- that they can pursue this option. There are many competant builders and design-builders, who can facilitate this. I have no problem with this concept as it usually is aimed towards simple, structurally uncomplicated, and un-design amibitious homes.

Any other habital structures are, by some sort of code, required to be designed & sealed by a licensed professional.

If a homeowner, or buider, wishes to buy VW, I beleive there is nothing from stopping them. It is really a moot point, as was pointed out by Michael K above. Complex, sophisticated, drawing software like VW usually discourage all but the most ambitious and time unrestrained buyers.

My philosophy is that if there is a GC or owner who does not want to use an architect, than the project is not worth it. You can gain respect by the projects you say no to.

  8. another way is to use three different door object combined into one symbol. one door each for the diffent leaf sizes. make sure they have no frames. the third is the cased opening for the overall frame. center them appropriately and you have a nice symbol...

  9. I am using a 20" Apple Cinema display with my Powerbook G4. It is connected with a Gefen VGA to ADC Conversion Box. It works quite well excepct with VW. Any time I move a VW window onto the disply it goes through endless regen cycles, sometimes taking several minutes before it settled down. After I execute a command, however, the same thing starts all over again forcing me to move the window boack onto my G4. Also, any dark tone patterns appear to vibrate on the screen, like a moire pattern.

I have gotten used to it, but it sure is a shame. I am posting to see if anyone else has experienced this, and if there is a solution. I have spoken to Gefen several times, and have followed their instructions for adjusting the box, but to no avail. We have three setups like this, and I have tried changing out the cables, box and displays, but its always mine that has the problem (video card?). Thanks for any feedback.
