  1. Hi Yes, I am in the office on a Sunday so in order to get out of here sooner, can someone tell me why a glass panel in a door renders the same texture as the frame. My windows do it just fine. Glass looking like glass, wood looking like wood. Do I have to un-group it and set different textures for each part? If that is the case then why even have it as a selection in the door settings. Much appreciated Chris
  2. I did that, I've got all kinds of textures form carpet to glass tile but I don't see anything that is just drywall. there is a texture "Almond Paint" But that is not quite right. Am I just not getting it or is it in another folder. here's what i did: Resource browser Browse a document opened VW 2009 opened library opened textures opened Interior finishes yeh?
  3. The ambient light helped. I went to change the texture of the wall but i could not find the drywall texture anywhere. Could someone help an old blind man out?
  4. Hi Any suggestions for rendering white walls and objects. Mine tend to look gray and I hate to add more lights to brighten them up. see attached example. Thanks
  5. Thanks Wes Much appreciated. I had forgotten about that tool. Chris
  6. I guess I should have looked closer at my window insert before i said "perfect" because it is unfortunately not. I inserted my custom window but VW has cut a hole in my wall that has me scratching my head. I have attached a picture of it. any ideas what is going on here? any help would be appreciated.
  7. I very much enjoy reading these threads that seem to grow a life all there own. I am just glad the whole McMansion thing didn't start up again. My 2 cents A well thought out (not just pretty) set of drawings are a form of communication between the designer, owner and builder and can save many headaches and litigation. Often the client hires the designer/architect to design a project based on program and budget. The CDs are then passed around to builders for estimates. The client picks the one that fits the budget and construction begins. The lack of detail, and forethought in the drawings along with the lack of communication between architect and builder generates changes and extra cost. The client is over budget and starts suing everyone in sight. Regardless who is responsible. Many of the problems discussed could be eliminated if the disconnect between builder and designer was removed. Back to the days when designers were on site. BIM design is one step closer and VW does a pretty good job of it. I am not to optimistic about any kind of IFC standard being established. We can't even get our measuring system standardized.
  8. Perfect, thanks Pat
  9. I have created a diamond shaped window, converted it to a symbol, and I would like to insert it into a wall. Although when I do it is flipped perpendicular to the wall. how do I get it to stop that and insert it parallel to the face of the wall the way it normally does. Thanks Chris
  10. Hi How do I know which wall is noted by the "frame" label in the worksheet. Is there a way to see which wall is which. thanks Chris
  11. Wes I like the video and your "out of the box" use of hay bales. Sounds like a good project for Burning Man. I think that Vworks worksheet capabilities are the most dynamic aspect of the software. right now my knowledge of them is very crude and limited, i feel I use them like a hammer instead of the surgical scalpel that they are. Do you recommend a source for more information about worksheets, how to use them, and how they are linked to the design.

    Symbol Data

Pat Thanks for the help. I think I am going to have to use a combination of techniques to get them to look the way I want. regards

    Symbol Data

I think that would put me back to where I was and having to enter in the data for each instance. It would all work if I could generate a schedule with multiple records. Is that possible?

    Symbol Data

Thanks for the response. Okay, I can now have default data attached to each instance with a record. But now i can only generate a schedule with just the one record. I would like to create a schedule for all of the lighting fixtures in a project. i.e. can light, wall sconces, track lighting, and so on. In this particular project I have many of each. In the past I would create a symbol with a record that had all the list items, enter in the data copy it, and then paste it in where I needed them. I would then be able to create a single schedule that reflected each item and the quantity. Is there a better way? Thanks Chris
  15. Hi How can I attach a record to a symbol so that every time I insert it the information is attached and included on the schedule. Right no I have to place the symbol and then go in and include all the information in the data pane. This can get very tedious when you have dozens of lighting fixtures on one drawing. Thanks Chris
  16. I have been procrastinating on upgrading my VW. maybe this is the excuse I have been....uh waiting for? Hopefully the new version has a better break line tool. Something close to the Revit version would be nice. Thanks Chris
  17. I don't have that display tab. Just attributes and it doesn't change anything.
  18. Hi Up until now i have been able to create satisfactory wall assemblies using graphics applied to a cut section of a viewport. I am thinking there must be an easier way. In a perfect world I would like to create a section of a wall that would show all the layers/materials that go into it (typical wall assembly) when I create the section. All the information is there, obviously, since I can see it in plan view on the design layer. But how do I get it to show up in section. So far, I have not been able to get anything other than a simplified graphic of the section and I must then add in all the different components using the 2D tools with the different fills necessary. The wall i am working on now has about six different elements. Also, the inside of the wall is made up of 1 1/2 furring strips 16oc. I would like to see them in plan as well as section. Is that possible? I have attached an image of what I am talking about. Thanks for the help Chris PS if this has been covered in another post just direct me there. unfortunately I could not find anything
  19. Thanks I will give it a try Chris
  20. never mind I just figured out what I was not doing. I was not using the 3d reshape tool to make my changes. It still is an awkward method, but better. If someone would like to post any reshaping tips or clever techniques, it would be appreciated. Chris Someday I hope to ask novice questions.
  21. Hi I would like to know if there is a way to see the existing drawing when editing the path of an extruded element. I have a lot of molding to install and I continue to have to make my changes and then exit the "edit group" window to see if I got it right. I some times have to do this several times for each occurrence. It gets quite tedious. Any input would be great. Regards Chris

    Reports

I have finished a lighting design using library symbols as well as to some that I have created. I attached records to all of them and produced a report that I am quite pleased with. My question is, can I create a column in the new worksheet that will give me the quantity of the different fixtures ? Or, do I need to go back and attach another record using the Materials Take-off record? Thanks for the help Chris

    Wall Join

Hi I have a 4' knee wall joining an 8' wall. How do I eliminate the line that is created at the joint when rendered using hidden line. Thanks Chris
  24. I guess i will have to play around with the settings for a while until i can figure out what is going on. By biggest issue is that the leaders extend into the drawing, adding extra lines where there shouldn't be any. I hate to have to go and delete all the dims and start over.
