  1. Hi Rick since no one has replied just yet I thought i would give you my thoughts. I have not been able to create the scenario you are looking for in the way you described in your post but what you can do is... 1) Create a new layer for these objects 2) go to your layer with your inserted objects and select all those objects. 3)copy all the objects 4) go to your new layer and "paste in place" all the objects you copied. They are now all on their own layer and you can do what you like with them. Don't forget to go to your OIP and and make sure you they don't show up on your schedule or you will have double what you need. Hope that Helps Chris

    splay Wall

yes it was a 2009 file. I have tried to delete the original and replace it with a new one but no luck. it appears the whole file is corrupt because I can create a new project file and it all works fine. thanks of for the help. I might have to start from scratch if I can't figure a way around this.

I have added a VW file, for those interested, to look at.

    splay Wall

Hi Pat I'm missing something. when I select the door and try to adjust any point, the whole door splay and all moves. I'm not familiar with the wrapping points. Do i need to use another tool to select the door? I tried the 2d and 3d reshape. no luck. funny thing is that when it's in any 3d mode it looks right. Yes, I don't see a field in the OIP pallet either

    splay Wall

Hi Having trouble with this one so I thought I would consult the great oracle. Why won't the walls around my doors splay the same as the windows. I can't seem to get the walls to angle back to the jamb with out the flat return on either side. I want the splay to look like my windows. (see attachment) Cheers
  7. I think I figured it out I was leaving the 2d polygons and then when I went to create the site model I did the short cut "command A" to select them all. that was my mistake, it was selecting the 2d polys as well. I still am getting the layer scale message but i am also getting my site model. thanks Jeffrey I am proud to announce that I am no longer a greenhorn. Regards Chris
  8. Hi Having trouble and I can't figure out what i am doing wrong. I have a pdf of a site plan form the 60's. 1 - I have traced my contours with the 2d ploy tool 2 - converted to polygons 3 - when I go to go from 2d polygons to 3d I get a message "A Plug-in Object parameter value is out-of range due to inappropriate layer scale. Change scale and try again." (see screen shot 2) 4 - I click ok and I am then able to set the z height of each line. 5 - I select my line and go to create site model tool, i fill in the various parameters. I click ok 6 - I then get the whau whau whau sound you get when you pick the wrong answer on a game show. (see screen shot 2) something aint right. I watched the webinair the other day and i can produce a nice site model from scratch using the 3d loci grid method but if i try to use the same method for the project i am working on it will take forever. thanks Chris

    door offset

I played around with it and this is the best I could get. I inserted the door, turned off the set to wall depth and set the insert option to left, adjusted the jamb depth with no interior trim.

    door offset

rsa I believe the offset tool is only for off setting Ds and Ws from say a corner, not off of the face of a wall with in the cavity. You might want to show it on your plan as is, centered in the wall cavity, and then detail it out on a sheet using 2d tools. Hope that helps Chris
  11. Is there a sample VA file (2010)that I can download? That is a complete project, with a full set of 2D CDs, worksheets and 3D renderings. It would help as a reference when i am stuck. I could deconstruct it and see how that designer did it and resolve a lot of issues more quickly.
  12. So I thought I would follow up with what i was doing wrong. It appears I did not make sure that the Data Row was set to Data and not Spread Sheet. This is how i got what I got: So I first set the row to data by control clicking on the row. then set the criteria for the row by pasting in one that I liked using the option button to add additional information. If you are having trouble check the data field of your object. and make sure you have the information in there for the criteria. then I pasted in the function (criteriavolume) and added functions that I need to the different rows. I hope this helps
  13. thanks Jeffery that is exactly what I am going for. So I am SOL until I upgrade i guess? C
  14. Up until now i have done a work around on this but I am now taking a few minutes to figure out a better way, with help of course. I would like to: Create a wall at 8'- have it render with siding and generate accurate materials take-off. Create a slab at 1'0" - that the outside face renders with siding. If I use model set up to create floor and slabs and I have it set from FF to FF. My take offs are all wrong and the stud heights are for a 9' wall. But they render correctly(with the siding covering the slab). if I set my layer height manually I get the right take-offs but I can't have the siding render on my band boards. In the real world I like to run my sheathing to the top of the wall below, Completely covering the bands and plates, creating a tighter envelope. Right now i just show this detail using a 2D drawing on a sheet. I hope this makes sense. I will be in and out of the office all day so i apologize if I don't respond right away. thanks C
  15. Great! I'll give it a whirl.
  16. I have attached a sample. I want to calculate the volume of three footings separately and then get a total for all of them. I have simplified the footings to three cubes in the sample file attached. why am I getting a "true" or "false" in the cell. it is not an error message that I am aware of. Thanks c
  17. I am trying to calculate the volume of a footer on a design layer. when I paste in the function and criteria - =CRITERIAVOLUME((L='Design Layer-1')) I just get a "true" in the cell and not the volume of my extruded object. Any help would be worth its weight. Thanks C
  18. I think I already know the answer to this but is there some way of getting cabinetry to display with a full overlay door (EU style). My drop down menu on the cabinetry tool just gives the partial overlay or a flush door option. I know I can un-group the cabinets and then change the door out but I thought I would see if there was another option. thanks for the help Chris
  19. Ok, not elegant but it will work. I just need to make sure I eliminate its records so the extra doors don't show up on my schedules. Regards Chris
  20. Yes but when I am making different views in different VPs I don't always want the door showing open or closed for that matter. can I change the way the door is displayed from one VP to another. If I select "show 3d open" then it is open in all VPs.
  21. while I am at it, i have another issue that i can't seem to find a good solution for. In floor plan i want doors open and showing their swing (like they are in wire frame). In elevation and section VPs i want them closed and in 3d VPs I want some closed and some open. is there a way to set up the doors to display the way I want them to? Thanks Chris
  22. "I SEE" SAID THE BLIND MAN
  23. Here is a picture of the elevation. thanks
  24. how do i get a 3D object to render and look 2D in my drawings. I have placed a toilet in a bathroom and when i create an elevation of the toilet. it renders with all the lines that make up the 3D object. I am sure there is a simple solution but i am just not seeing it. Any help would be appreciated. Chris
