  1. As far as identifying them, I think there's a plug-in that does that (and delete them) I can't remember whose.

As for where they come from: in Widows the Ctrl-click duplicates things.

It's very easy to try to Shift-click and get the wrong one instead.

The record for my students is 17 identical Walls.

  2. Replaced with Indirect Lighting (View>Lighting Options)

Much better results much faster, and simple to set.

Also Environment Lighting (from HDRI) much the same as before

  3. The "Unfold" command in the 3D Powerpack section has been able to do simple developments for a few versions now. It only works on simple mathematically developable surfaces eg a truncated cone. It cannot develop what a first year sheetmetal apprentice can -eg like the transition from a circle to a rectangle- let alone complex surfaces.

Bob Wagners plugin set is what you want. -bless his heart

  4. If you have an extrusion which has come out hollow, it's because the shape you extruded is not a single closed poly.

You must compose or otherwise join all the individual bits into a single shape and make sure it's closed. (no open segments)

  5. With the exception of some special objects ( eg Walls, extrudes)..... you cant texture just one face of an object; the texture is applied to all of the object.

Use the Extract tool from the 3D pallette to extract just the face you want, shift it a tiny amount off the face of the object and texture that.

  6. Thanks Kaare,

The Gentlemen's Area would be quite safe.

As for physics: all the ribs are notched together, and the core of each rib has a square hole through which a 12mm square steel bar passes and joins all the ribs, and tube pieces from one end to the other. Then glued up and end bolts tightened.

    Safe as houses. :-)

  7. Nicholas:

Two questions: is the HDRI shown included in Designer

    No,

it's one I found on the twitterblog.

    search for; Free HDRI rendering.

    there are a few sites.

Note The C4D engine does not seem to cope properly with sphere (probe)mapped HDRIs only LatLong

is a virtual rear end comfortable in those chairs?

Virtual steatopygia might be subject to linear U-V deformation in the -W direction, but the prototype is actually as comfortable as any wooden chair. Perhaps moreso because the slats are somewhat springy. It was shortlisted for "best Prototype" at the annual furniture industry show when I entered it, but no bannana.

    Thanks for your inspiring renderings.

    thankyou

  8. Some better poly filters in VW would really help clean up the bitmap trace. The Simplify Poly plugin may still be available somewhere and may help some.

God Bless John Williams who wrote that thing(I think). I use it all the time.

I can't imagine why it has never been introduced into the program. I have a copy of the VSS or VSM file for 2011 if you cant find it at VectorDepot. (I think it's in the "old" section down near the bottom of the list.

  9. I don't think there has ever been any software that could to this.

Macromedia's Freehand had a FANTASTIC trace tool. but I'm not sure what became of it after Macromedia got swallowed. It might have been incorporated into Flash or Illustrator. (??)

The VW trace has always been awfull and only just barely works on very simple high contrast line work

  10. Rather than extrude a wiggly line, Use a wiggly NURBS curve for the top edge of the drape and a different one (if you want) for the bottom curve, then Loft between them.

This will enable you to have both edges hang whatever way you want and have the folds hang more like a real drape.
