Hmmm... That might indicate that it was done on a 1:2500 scale? perhaps laid into design layer and then  viewported in?

everyone works differently, so that's likely the case. I'd be interested in seeing it though.

If you view it with the Google Cardboard viewer (or Gear VR or whatever), are the views just a 2D projection, or are they in 3D? 3D is what really sold me on Google Cardboard, as seeing the depth at the same time as it tracking your head is what gives the true immersive experience.

I would imagine you'd need to render two 360's around 50-70mm apart, and send one to one eye, and one to the other. (Split image for cardboard setups)

I was playing with this a number of years ago, and it's tricky to get completely right, but it is doable. You get into all sorts of little intricacies though, whether the cameras converge on a point, or always run parallel. And then when looking at 360 style images, you get into Polar merging and so on, where the camera separations reduce gradually as you look towards the up and down directions...

To set it up "long-hand" would take a lot of studies and experimentation to get it right, but you'll learn a so much... Let's hope they introduce a 1-button solution.

  3. While I'm sure it's expected behaviour and quite normal, I keep getting caught out.

When exporting a big model to DXF, I find that when I'm in top/plan I get the 2d representation of a hybrid in the 3d model. I get cross with myself, as I know all I have to do is switch to top wireframe or an isometric to force the 3d bit to export. So I find I do the export twice on a lot of occasions.

I'd find it helpful in the export dialogue if we could have a "export hybrid objects as...." radio button. either 2d, 3d, or if possible, both!

    Just thinking out loud.

being able to link two or all panes to edit modes might be useful as well

That workflow is excellent. In 3Ds for example, you frequenty pick up an object or vertex, and then look at another view while moving to get exact positioning.

Takes some getting used to, but speeds you up no end.

Also, what would be lovely, is if our selection handle can toggle to the behaviour of the gizmo in subdivision. It's really handy to restrict to one or two axes at any given time.

Is it possible, in the new set up to have a top, side and section view open at the same time?

  5. You have discovered a bug.

    I did this to reproduce.

Made a 50x50x50 cube. Duplicated it twice, to make three.

Then corner snapped the cubes to one another to make a staircase thingy... Added solids and then the clip cube presents the same weirdness.

I only got to it when I properly overlaid your geometry rather than snapping perfectly on edges. seems co-incident edges can confuse the cube. Can anyone else confirm?

    Can you post a file?

Doesn't need to be the whole thing, just copy/paste the problem stuff into a new file.

Just another thought though, OpenGL can have issues when your model is a million miles away from the file origin. Can you put a 3d locus at 0,0,0 to see how far away your stuff is?

  7. intersecting Geometry?

Make two identical cubes, and have them "crash into" each other and then use the clip cube.. you should see similar behaviour.

When you do a solid addition to these cubes that behaviour will revert to normal.

On the extrudes source poly, make sure you don't have two identical polys over each other. that'll produce the same behaviour

I know it can be frustrating, but sometimes, we expect too much

There's been some very very silly errors slipping through the net.

One particular one, was if you had a beam aligned left of a control line in top/plan. when you went to wireframe it jumped to the right (and back again)

It was a very schoolboy error that slipped through.

literally unusable and remain so through all subsequent SPs

We can all tolerate buggy and unusual behaviour. If it's predictable and manageable, then even better. Progress happens over time. As designers we always release iterations and amends, it's only natural.

Drawing number co-ordination bug was acknowledge as "fixed but not implemented" in SP2. didn't come in sp3 or sp4. Most likely as it wasn't fixed properly or had knock on effects to other parts of the software. What's annoying though, is that it's likely to be left in 2017 now, with the fix being implemented in 2018 instead.

I would find it much more thrilling to now leak all fixed bugs and improvements to

(which may be nice or not, ready for release or not)

    as it currently happens

Love it or hate it, this is where the Adobe model excels. Bug fixes and upgrades are rolled out as they occur.

A big source of frustration was waiting until many fixes were collected into a service pack. I agree that the autodesk million updates and billion hotfixes are insane, but that's only when they're down to the user to download/discover. The auto-check / download and patch adobe style makes life nice and easy.

This will naturally increase customer satisfaction enormously.

Also... that's where beta tools could be launched. Perhaps an opt-in user choice. so those of us with patience can try the new things out, and those that need ultimate stability can stay only on gold released items. It was painful to have all the exciting new tools marred with bugs and silly untested behaviour for 8 or 9 months (with some still lingering even now!) when 2017 is about to drop off the support cycle.

Personally, I'm all in favour of the software as a service licence method, both for affordability and update roll out frequency.

would have been better to let the VSS lapse and then re-start it on a special deal 6 months later if and when reviews of 2018 seemed favourable?

My point entirely... There's no info or incentive to renew, except the threat of being left behind,

    15 minutes ago, line-weight said:

it's arranged to offer the best deals to new users

Yes. I took advantage of an offer too.... But as it turned out it was to get the last few remaining sales and up the vss cost before giving it away for free... @JimW my customer number is G0GTZC if you want to check the validity of this claim.

based on whether the new release actually offers anything

See above... I used to use VW machine design in a previous studio... then support was dropped and, as I'm aware, there was no free or cut down migration to another designer product, just straight back to fundamentals. lost section VPs and nav pallette functions to name a couple.

The Machine Design components we paid extra for are considered legacy and are unsupported/undeveloped. Taken since 2009 and some investment from me to get my confidence back.

I think if sales/customer service/retention team offering me a genuine sweetener would help.... but... never heard a word, to date on any issues raised.

    the structural member tool

How was it ever allowed to go to full release???

It didn't take more than 3 minutes of use to realise that it was not fit for purpose. Remember my post about plan view and top view causing the beam to align to the opposite side? It might have been nice to alert people that it was still in testing (like ifc data would be fully implemented in sp1, on 2016 I think) wasted time, which is chargable hours

And we still, to this day, don't have any BSI Universal Columns appearing in the list. I flagged that many months ago. Big issue for a lot of us.

also, it's widely acknowledged that any sp5 (or sp6 on one occasion) is generally a compatibility release, not a bug fix. So I don't expect to see a fully working structural member tool in 2017, ever. Lets see what new info comes out in the next few days... you never know. Surprises do happen!

I am surprised that no one at VW commented about my buying RW, only to have it given away 2 or 3 months later... The REALLY hard thing to swallow is that my reseller is on the Beta test team, so it's very highly likely that he knew this fact when he took my money off me.  AND it put up my annual VSS subs cost too... had I not done it I would have saved a lot on the RW module AND have a cheaper VSS sub cost. (I should have been told on initial purchase that the plant tool image props wouldn't have worked without RW....)

    #CustomerFeedback, #FeelingSwindled

I do want to support VW going into the future.... but I expect VW to support me too.

read through the forums here to see what % of what you're allegedly buying really works....

That is completely true unfortunately. It seems that a new tool or feature needs to mature by a couple of years before being stable or properly tested. I feel that prior releases only leave the beta phase at or around sp3. I used to get really excited by new release cycles, but actually get bogged down in learning to avoid strange performance issues or crashes.

I don't mean to be negative, but it's just the repeated experiences. Even now, after so many years, silly things still happen. A good example is a sheet with a title block and viewports with labels. Duplicating the sheets messes the titles and VP numbers up. I've made so many school boy errors, and looked like a fool for letting these things slip through when I'm in a rush, but instead need to nurse the software over the finish line and double check things (more often than I should!)

Another thing that I notice is when a new annual release happens, all support for previous launches cease. So if a fix for an issue comes up in the current version for something that never worked properly, older users are left to flounder or forced to upgrade.

Autodesk, Apple and Microsoft roll out important updates to legacy products also. Why isn't this the case in VW?

So my worry is... No VSS upgrade and I might be left with a perpetual licence of 2017 which doesn't work as intended... Or Buy VSS and spend 6 months on Beta tests.

Don't get me wrong... I earn my living from VW, so it's a vital part of my daily routine. I'm it's biggest advocate and super-fan in the local design community. I am really looking forward to teaser Tuesday, like everyone.

  13. Hi folks

im wondering if there's any details of the up coming release of vw.

im getting a fair few reminders that my vss is due for renewal, but I have no idea what I'll be buying with it.

the release of 2017 was marred with tools that didn't work, regressive issues and bugs, with a very long wait between service packs.

vw covers many different industries so I'd like to see what's coming for my workflow...

ive noticed that the design summit is much later this year too, which is usually the platform for announcements... does that hint at it being a much later release?

i can't justify it at the moment to my accounts people with no info, as I'm still getting told off for a huge faux pas over renderworks.

bought designer (no renderworks) found that none of the image props or plants worked without it, which annoyed me a lot... persevered for 18 months, then shelled out another £650 or so to add RW, just to see that everyone got it for free two months later anyway.

    very wary buyer nowadays. :(

    Does this lag?

    Ok...

I need to assume that it's file specific. Can't replicate in a new file, so I take it back.

The only significant thing is that I imported a 850kbDWF file, which in actual fact had a ton of data in it... but the curves and arcs were faceted to a million straight lines, so it was actually very heavy in terms of vertices.

There's an issue where geometry or line work which is miles away from the origin can cause problems, but this one was all tight around the origin...

One other (and tiny issue) is the scale command. where you measure an existing distance, and then input a new one (option 2 in the menu I think)

When scaling stuff this way, you need to either do it four or five times, or change the file tolerance to .001 or similar (I work in metric)

Seems that the initial dim "grab" doesn't load the dialogue with the floating points, so you get an approximation on first attempt. That issue has been around for years, so not flagging anything new.

Sorry to alarm and sensationalise about the locus issue... I'll go further and see if I can replicate it properly... rather than moan straight away.

and yes... I'd love to have access to the last 41 service packs I've missed!!!! ;)

  15. Hi Everyone.

I've got a line which I want to divide evenly with locus points.

Go to Modify, drafting aids, then Line into segments. I've been trying various values from 2 to 50 and in all sorts in between, and when the operation completes it takes an age to give me control back (Black screen, spinning mouse timer)

Then, when I realise I want a different value, I Undo... this takes an age too. really bogs me down. happens every single time. Didn't notice it pre SP4, but that's not to definitively blame SP4 for it.

Not sure what's going on under the hood, but to do the same operation with move by points tool, in distribute mode, happens immediately and nicely... But the undo after is still incredibly laggy and slow.

Granted, I do have an imported DWF on another greyed layer behind, but whether it's greyed, invisible, deleted or anything the file still lags.

Done restarts and all sorts, and can replicate every time. Anyone else noticing this?

    Ideas?

Although not a modelling tip, I made a huge ramp like this a few years ago based on client drawings.

The main issue with the as-built version was the change in pitch on the tighter radii... Along the long edges it pitched very gently, and at the tighter rads it pitched very steeply, especially on the inside corner.

The model prototype demonstrated that the internal pitch of the tight rad was far too steep, with only 1 in 12 allowed in the EU... so we ended up doing flat "landings" on the tighter ends, and then only pitched up the longer sides. This also had the side effect of offering a good surface to get on and get off... So....

Looking at your design the ellipse is split in two, with a gantry between the halves. So, might it be an approach to extrude your surface in plan, and then simply rotate it a little in elevation to match the environment? That way you don't get the tightening on the corners, and it's a lot easier to model and much cheaper in the final construction too.

But really painful gets the MBP Tool when you start to use the multiplier option

and use any other number than 1

I find this one of the most useful functions of all... saves a lot of align/distribute functions.

Also dragging is totally useless if you want to be precise as you cant choose edge snap points (it starts scaling an object)...

Have you checked your resize buttons at the top of the screen? you'll have "resize off" "resize" and "resize multi".... switch resize to off

  18. Are you doing it visually or via a menu command?

when dragging, there's a modifier key for copy... ctrl+drag on PC.

Doing it numerically you can move with the modify->move command, and to copy (and array) you can use the move by points command in the basic tool pallete.

Also, when ctrl+drag, visually moving, press the tab key to bring up the data bar. you have distance and angle on the first pair of inputs, then relative on the second (±x ±y is your cue), and then absolute co-ordinates on the third pair of inputs.

Stick with it, it's a much slicker workflow when you've adjusted to it.

Also, as with most programs, invoking a tool and pressing f1 will bring you up the help page, which are very well written, often with short videos on a lot of subjects.
