VW 11.5 changing file names

VW 11.5 suddenly crashed, and then all file names were changed to the old 8 letter max system. After rebooting several times, it will not change back. Is there a switch somewhere in the options/preferences, or must I reinstall, which will be a bind as I have customised my workspace? Has anybody had the same experience?
