Labels on Vertical Truss

Has anyone had any experience placing lighting instruments on vertical truss (or ladders) in a design layer, then creating a cropped viewport with a side view of that truss with the labels (e.g. channel, color) showing? From what I can see the label legend manager only shows labels for instruments in Top/Plan view. The problem is when you have a design layer with a vertical truss, all of the instruments are on top of each other (desirable when rendering in a side view or section) but you can't read the labels as they all sit on top of each other. The only solution I can see is to to manually create a separate design layer with the vertical truss layed out "flat" so you can see all of the instrument labels, then in a seperate layer have a facsimile of the instruments for 3d views/sections etc. Any help/ideas here would be appreciated.
