    Dormers??

How can I add a soffit to a dormer? Do I have to manually add it to a gable dormer?
  2. I have a handrail object and for some reason it will not let me change its class to something else. How can I change it? I have tried doing it through the objects pallet but it just switches back.
  3. Ok, I tried editing the existing roof object with the 3D edit and it give me the error (The position of the selected design layer viewport is locked). If I go to modify unlock it still says the same thing, but it tell me in order to edit roof object you must exit group and ungroup the roof object. What am I missing?
  4. I am still confused about the whole model setup command. Say I have a 2-story house and I want the ceiling height for the bottom floor to be 10' and I want the ceiling height for the second floor to be 9', What should the settings look like for each of the floors and the Roof? (Elevation, Ceiling Height, Slab thickness?etc) What is the area between the top of the ceiling height and the bottom of the overhead slab area? Is there a place for me to set that? Is there a tutorial somewhere that explains everything in detail? I have looked through both manuals and they just give brief descriptions of each area.
  5. I have a roof where I am in the middle of editing the roof faces, groups and so on. My question is this: When I ungroup a roof object and start messing with the faces to get them the way I need, 1. why does the attic space disappear? How do I get it back? 2. I no longer have the buttons (control points) to manipulate whether something is a gable, eave or dutch gable roof, how do I get that back? 3. Is there a way to manipulate a face and be able to see the other faces, so I can make sure everything lines up correctly? When I ungroup a roof object it breaks it up into many faces and I only see and can edit one at a time. 4. Once I ungroup a roof object and then go in an edit a face, is it still a roof face or do I have to do something else? Does anyone have a sample file I can pick apart where you have manipulated a roof object and its faces. Please help!!
  6. That works for me. What about the design layer for the pool house? Do I just add another design layer, (say Mod-Floor-1B)?
  7. I have a problem. I have a very large 2-story house that has a detached garage, pool house and main house. The garage and pool house are both detached. My question is this: I can not fit the pool house on the first floor plan sheet so I need to make another sheet that is a continuation of the first sheet. I have always drawn these by hand, but now I am not sure how to do this in VW2008. Do I just create a new sheet? Or is there another way that I should do this? What is the best way to achieve this?
  8. There is a step-by-step in the fundamentals manual starting on page 464.
  9. I have a problem when I render in hidden line. Parts of some of the areas do not show up. what is causing this and how can I fix it? I am exporting it as a 300 dpi PDF.
  10. I believe this is a case where you have to model it.
  11. I have attached another photo of the look I am trying to achieve in the first thread, called "Example.jpg". I just don't know how to proceed in doing this. Also, why is it when I tell it to create roof from the walls, that if I let it create on the same layer as the walls it matches up to the walls. However, if I tell it to place the roof say on the roof layer, it (the roof) is much higher that the walls when I view in the elevation VP, why is that?
  12. Thanks Peter. Another question, since this is a two-story house will it automatically create the first-story roof when I creat the second story roof, or do I have to create them both seperately? Also, the back portions of the second story are actually supposed to be interior walls, only the left, front and right are seen from outside of the house, so will this change how I should go about creating the roof structure?
  13. Everyone, this is my first attempt at creating a model in VW2008. My next step that I want to do is add the roof. How do I proceed using the creat roof tool? I went to the second floor selected the exterior walls and it gave me an error saying there is not enough walls. So I tried adding a wall where the stairs are and it said the roof is too complex. How would any of you create the roof structure for this house. PLEASE HELP!! I have attached screen shots of the first and second floors. Hopefully, this will give you an idea of my dilemma.
  14. It would be nice to be able to create angled cabinets and countertops. It would also be nice to be able to have the current tools allow for you to cut a hole in the top of the counter to add a sink.
  15. Is there an automated way for figuring square footage? Of course I know how to do it manually, but is there another way to do this in VW2008?
  16. You can create your own custom title blocks, including any data fields that you want to appear on each sheet but I believe you have to input the names and information.
  17. Does anyone have any suggestions on creating kitchen counters? There are only a couple listed in the forum.
  18. Does anyone have a suggestion on making an archway opening into a room? Should I use a cased opening door? If so, how do I turn off the jamb, (setting everything to 0")?
  19. I will give it a try thanks.
  20. Exactly how do you do that? Do I have to go into the roof group and edit it? Or do I just click on one of the edit points and raise the bearing height? I believe I have tried just clicking on one of the edit points and I did not notice a change.
  21. I am new to VectorWorks 2008 and I would like to know how to create a roof that has a main section that is at one height, and then say an entryway that is another height? I am not sure how to do this. Can anyone give me a hand or point me to a tutorial that explains this.
  22. Am I correct to assume that I can create a hybrid symbol by creating it in 3D and then display it in top view and then tell it to create a symbol? Or is there another way (correct) to do this?
