  1. Hi Jim

No. 4 - I have the same trouble with the nuts and bolts (in fact most PIO's) and I have tried to get to the bottom of it but unfortunately no-one seems to be able to help. Sometimes zooming out a fair way and then using the snap loupe tool to zoom in again can help with the selection but it's not reliable and a real pain in the neck.

You can also try altering the size of the selection box which is found in preferences under the interactive tab but again it's a real pain as I have to keep restetting it depending on how far I'm zoomed in otherwise you end up selecting anything that is nearby.

No. 3 has always baffled me

Not much help I'm afraid but you're not alone

  2. Associate dimension will not work on a 3D object because VW doesn't have 3D dimensions....yet!

The dimension tool is only 2D, a really problem when dimensioning 3D objects in viewports on sheetlayers as I end up having to 'over-draw' the 3D objects such as circles and radii with 2D objects in order to create the dimension. Of course if the design changes then this process has to be repeated.

I'm sure it will be in 2010...from a machine design point of view it is essential.

  3. Hi Bjarmi

I would agree with Oyvind on this. VW does what you need for cnc and laser cutting, and I do find that the mechanical module doesn't really offer that much that is really machine design specific. Lots of bolts and bearings (alot of which I get from the internet anyway) but not 3D dimensioning or 3D contraints or collision/interference of moving parts. I'm sure it's coming and I hope it's in VW2010, it would be welcomed by many I'm sure.

I have used both Inventor and solidworks and both are really good at what they do. Although having said that I've been using 3D scans of body parts lately and there are some somethings that VW can do that Inventor won't (like extracting complicated nurbs surfaces from a mouth!)

My problem is the cost comparison. I in my opinion you get alot for you money with VW and it covers a much wider gamut. I am also (dare I start another PC/Mac silliness) a Mac user so unless I run Windows on my Mac or by a seperate system, VW is the best for what I do.

  4. When using a working plane and I select front view I get a certain view, fine.

Then if I select front view again the view changes to another view. This seems to be a cycle of 3 views, in other words if I select front view 3 times I arrive back at the first view.

Why does this happen? I have been using working planes for a while and never really understood this point.

  5. I always ask the engineering company what they prefer, but generally DXF seems to be more useable. I have always had good stuff back but I don't know what hoops, if any, the engineers have jumped through to get the result.

I have used CNC routing machines with DXF files and the accuracy is very good.

I've also exported IGES files to a 5 axis machine with good results. Again this was to an engineering company and they didn't have any problems that I heard about.

  6. You will need to edit the title block at the symbol stage through the resourse browser.

Open up a file with the title block in it and then look in the resourse browser under symbols/plugin objects. There you will find your title block. Right click and chose edit then choose 2D symbol. You should be able to select the text and change the font and size.

Hope that helps, (sorry if you already know all that)
