  1. Are you saying you can override the hatch pattern by editing the class in the viewport, but that the scale and rotation of the new hatch are fixed by whatever you did in the design layer?

Exactly, If on the Design layer you have an object that is by Class Attributes and you rotate or move the hatch using the Attribute Mapping tool, which now snaps to object points, and you go to a viewport where that objects resides and change the class attributes for that viewport from the originally setting for the hatch from brick to fish scales, then in the object has fish scale hatch pattern and is rotated and located via the movement of the brick hatch you performed on the originating object on the design layer.

  2. Oh can someone confirm if the hatch is till overidable when the rotation and size is changed?

Yes, the Viewport override hatch retains the hatch rotation and location as set for the objects hatch on the Design Layer if it is set to by Class Attributes.

  3. Is 3D Parametrics included in VW2010? It was said that this would be included in this version and if it's not, then why not?

No 3d DCM parametric constrains this time, maybe next time. Each step makes the next one easier and this new feature will take many some time and experience to be able to use fully. The implementation is a great first step.

So, you never answered the question, if you had to pay full price for the software and the dongle if they were lost or stolen, would you? We have no issues with Dongles, we have issues with the above policy.

Our preference, policy, and implementation is that everyone pays, for what they use, as we do and as it seems you do.

The dongle is not an inhibitor of this as in some parts of the world, as you have so rightly pointed out, certain folks have found ways to either replicate or to eliminate the need for this device. No difference than the company who has found a way to run the Mac OS on standard Intel Hardware and sell it to the public.

Based upon your Assessment of market share and the amount of theft of Vectorworks in the USA, it most definitely would seem prudent as business folks for Nemeteschek North Amercia to abandon their home market.

Never thought this was an argument, more of a discussion that was revealing the differences of implementation of security measures in differing areas of the world. Argument implies an attempt to have on idea win out over another, not our purpose.

We never said Dongles would not be the way to go, that is for NNA to decide. Never said we would not use Dongles, as we mentioned we used software with dongles in many instances as well as other methods.

All we did do was indicate the issues and perceptions one might encounter with Dongles in the USA in relation to your original comment and our preference due to present implementations in the U.S. of A.

    Thanks for all the insights.

  6. The Dongle is the only know means of preventing software theft. So why are you so upset?

The replacement cost of a dongle is in tens of US Pesos. A stolen dongle is useless, unless the serial number is also stolen. Even the combo is commercially next to worthless, because the thief cannot upgrade.

In an office of 200 licences, there only needs to be one network dongle. There are even plans for travellers.

Can you perhaps provide proof that Americans, the nation of champion levels of criminality, is immune to software theft?

    Not upset at all, intrigued.

In the US for those Software companies that require dongles, if you lose them then you pay full price for the software and Dongle, its as if you had to buy anew. This, as you so rightly point out is due to the excessive criminality of our culture.

I think in your earlier post you may have pointed out those that participate a bit more in all the software piracy. Never really kept track of what area of the world has the highest piracy.

If you like, we can keep the conversation going via private messages, as much of the commentary may not be very helpful to others interested in this topic.

  7. Don't know if it has been added in 2010 yet but simply being able to 'tab' through several objects one on top of the other to select one in the middle would be very useful in Plan view (at the moment it is only possible to select the one on top)....

    Not available yet.

  8. (Stolen) We do not and have not, wonder why you would think so? Have you experience otherwise?

Have no issue with crime prevention, but ask, if someone stole your dongle or you happen to lose your dongle and had to pay full price to repurchase, it sounds like you are OK with that Scenario, yes? That makes sense, puts the liability on the end user.

But as we said, with the Quark Model, one can check out a serial number for a user defined length of time and go to the north pole and back all the while working with no connection to the net.

For larger offices with over 200 dongles the cost to manage becomes an price inhibitor due to the increased possibility of the above scenario (especially for those that travel). Of course, we here in the US are just one step above Neanderthals which further explains are aversion to Dongles.

This has been this way for some time now and NNA is fully aware of the issues. Maybe someone from NNA will weigh in on why the tool creates the type of spaces that are created.

Different Jurisdications do have differing requirements as to the depth definition for slanted parking spaces but as you rightly point out for many instances the tool is not representing the depth expected based upon the input.

  10. Maybe this has been asked a hundred times over but has there been any advancement to a 64 bit platform with this latest release of Vectorworks 2010?

Also has there been any additions to the window PIO that helps create circle windows at all?

One last question if anyone knows. With this new Wall sculpting tool will that allow for the ability to create flares (see attached Image) on my walls or possibly be able to create slanted walls?

    [img:left]http://tmsarchitects.com/press/Images/tms-elevation%20with%20flare.jpg[/img]

    64bit not complete yet.

No circle windows yet in the PIO. Though you can create your own.

You can create flares and slanted walls, but not end to end of the wall. You will have to fill in the corners with separate objects not within the wall.

  11. Depends on the crime, especially since we have the right to carry and bear arms and have the deathly fear of any form of lost of freedom. Was just pointing out the cultural issue of a dongle in the US,, not qualifying whether it was civilized or not.

It would seem here in the US we choose to use a more stealthy form Dongle, having the application phone home to NNA.

But your assessment about legal recorded sales is more correct using the Dongle, that is basically why Apple(where their computer is the dongle for the Software) has very lax use of any form of licensing requirements for the software they distribute at the consumer level.

We find here the crime is the stealing of the Dongle along with the software, which without having to phone home is untraceable. We had this occur with our use of Form Z and the dongles required. One day 4 of the dongles were missing and we had to repurchase.

We prefer the method that Quark uses with a License Server that is monitored by us and by Quark which allows the best of Security and Flexibility for larger offices over multiple locations.

  12. Can I? Does the Section Viewport look and behave like a Top/Plan view? Can it be used interactively to Design things?

If not, your preaching does not matter.

Then if that is the requirement then there are many methods and tools not available.

I agree with you 100% on the need for what you describe, but from what I can tell you are an economic pragmatist when it comes to what NNA can provide, yes? Do you think it is worth their resources to provide this at this moment in the overall developement of Vectorworks, or could it be added later, a few versions down the road?

Presently with the navigation capabilities between Veiwports and Design Layers as well as to other files the present setup is workable but not ideal.

If one is working entirely in 3d anyway to design, seeing the plan graphic representation might actually get in the way of visualizing your ideas? Attempting to be as agnostic as possible here and working with what is provided presently.

  13. By a fairly common architectural draughting convention, the floor plan is a horizontal section at the level of 1200mm. The VW Top/Plan is anything but!

But it could be. We could have the sectioning level as one of the layer attributes and parametric objects could easily assume the relevant graphic attributes.

You can define Plan views today at the height you define by using a Section Viewports of a Sheet Layer Viewport set to Front, Side, or Back View and have the resultant Viewport use the Class or Wall Style Definitions. This has been possible since 2008 and most of the bugs have been fixed in 2010 for proper representation. So, for buildings with complex spatial and sectional qualities, if modeled, one can have as many plan representations as horizontal sections desired without having to go through 2d drafting gyrations.

  14. Thanks everyone.

Ok I've done the above with a combination of all those.

With the central blade and the loft tool, what are the steps I should be taking?

Do I create the top as a polygon (thick part of the blade), then a single polyline for the bottom (sharp part of the blade) and then loft between them?

Charlie, did you down load the file with all the objects. If you right click on an object and right click you can then enter into the history of the objects used to create the final shape. In the above file supplied this should give you an idea of one method to create the knife.

  15. Corner windows

I have no need for American Gothic Corner Windows in Victorian Prairie Renessaince Style. Or whatever the McMansiontects do.

Kool Aid(Petri), you may want to travel over here some time, not everything built is a McMansiontects. I would say less than 5%, its just that is what gets the most press. Ours is a multi-cultural place with folks from all over the world unlike most culturally homogeneous places in the world.

What we need here in the U.S is a good Glazed wall tool, A.K.A Curtainwall or Storefront.

  16. I assume that list of features you (1D2D3D_4D) posted is one you generated and is not available or properly detailed anywhere?

It's a little odd that N.N.A. has had their press event to release the details of 2010 without posting any official literature or details to the general populous. All this interim chatter, albeit well intentioned, coming from multiple sources trying to "unofficially" explain the details of 2010 serves what? Controlled confusion? Deliberate dissipation? Did their trumpets catch a dose of the Dali's and go limp in the breeze? :/

There are over 80 new and improved tools and features for everyone to look forward to using in the coming weeks, if they are so inclined to purchase. If one is a present user of Vectorworks, the upgrade is well worth the upgrade cost especially if one is using version 2008 or earlier.

The list posted is not an official list, that will come soon, but is comprehensive enough to indicate there is something for everyone.

NNA is not at fault here, it is the press has been slow to release the details. If you have questions regarding the details, feel free to ask, I am sure there are many others that can answer any question you may have on a particular feature or tool.

ArchonCAD is continuing to post new video visually describing how the new works. Your wait will be short before you see all the official stuff.

  17. Has the sloping sill issue been sorted out? Does it cut out walls as they should and then, do they reflect properly in the Live Section?

Speaking of Live Sections, can we now edit objects in Live Sections (or elevation viewports for that matter) eg. moving windows and doors around as we would on plan view? (just like ArchiCAD)

    Thanks,

    Yes, and No.

  18. G'day,

I'm a student learning Vectorworks in my first semester.

We've been asked to model a knife block, not unlike this one: http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/images/jo/john-lewis-knife-block-set-6-piece.jpg

I've done the block okay, just struggling with the knife handle. That's what I'm asking about.

When you have a curved handle like this (the black part), what is the best way to model it?

I tried making contours of the shape, converting them to NURBS, moving them along the Z-axis and then using the loft tool, but that didn't work.

What would be the best way to model something with curves like that?

    Thanks,

    Charlie

Here is a file with a knife and objects that depict the steps. Beware when you draw polylines you have to make sure they are closed when creating the extrude before you fillet them.

This Knife was created using the Loft Tool for the Blade then Extrudes,Subtract Solid, and Fillet Edge tools for the Handle and rivets.

  19. The planar objects stick to the Design Layer Plane Definition. So if all you Design Layers are set to 0' the Planar objects appear at Zero feet. Now if the planar objects exist on Design Layers with differing Z values then the planar objects appear separated by that amount.

Planar objects do have some limitation as to how they appear. In Top/Plan view they look and act just like the old 2d objects which are now called Screen Objects. But in other view orientations Screen objects appear with all the attributes they had before and are stuck to the Screen Plane. The planar objects on the other hand will rotate and stay associated to the Design Layer Z plane but will lose the ability to represent any fill or line style attributes.

They are still very useful in that upon extrude in any view they extrude from perpendicular to the Design Layer plane.
