  1. Hi -

I have a deck which I designed in VW 8 and built on my home.

At the time, before building, I used a water level and determined deck height above the yard at certain corners.

The illustration shows what these heights are - I'm wondering if anyone can give advice on what might be the best way to create a reasonable ground model which (obviously) has elevation points matching those shown in this illustration, which is in a perspective view just for clarity...

    Thanks!

  2. Thank you George -

I think part of the problem is that the layers/class mechanisms are sort of odd; when I created the old drawings, it was in v8 and I guess I didn't have a good grasp of layer links, and probably created some content on linked layers.

I'm still not sure why the layers/classes mechanism works the way it does (or, at least, why it was set up that way) - classically, layers -should- be "linked" when rotating views without a penalty...

But I digress - I think, as it said somewhere, that classes are actually what I'm thinking of as classic "layers" so I'll have to train myself to think about it that way.

For that matter, SketchUp doesn't approach layers in the classic way, either - in SketchUp, layers are really groups.

Honestly, I still don't know why I would have to link, say, two layers, one with a first floor and one with a second floor. If there needs to be a mechanism in place to create details, elevations, etc. at different scales/views, layers doesn't seem (to me, right now) the logical place to put them.

I know, somewhere, there are also "sheet layers" - or something like that - but I guess I'd anticipate that "sheets" are more what are currently "layers"... hmmm....

Ah well... back to the virtual drawing board.

    Thanks again-

    Andrew

  3. Thanks guys -

But what if I don't want to delete the layer linked -object-, just the layer link?

Or, maybe I want to keep the layer, but not the layer link?

It's strange to think I'd link, say, a furniture layout, then have to delet it just to eliminate the link....?

    thx

  4. Hi EJ,

Thanks... not sure what "Cadastral" departments are, though!

BTW I saw your post on X-Plane... I'm a long-time flight simmer and am just wondering when "google earth" type stuff will be available! And since we're going to Jamaica in a few months, I finally have the desire to load up the Carribean...

Anyway, thanks for the info. I'll try to find out what it takes to get them from our local govt.

    Cheers

    Andrew

  5. Hi all-

I'm wondering if there's a way to find publicly available survey files for things as small as, perhaps, a single undeveloped residential lot, and perhaps as large as a small subdivision.

Basically, I'd love to be able to pop into Google Maps or Google Earth and specify boundaries, but I'm pretty new to this and don't really know where to start.

    Thanks,

    Andrew

  6. Hi-

I've inserted a window into a wall and arrayed it...

The original shows up and renders fine; the arrayed duplicates show up in wireframe, but do not appear in OpenGL or Renderworks.

Sorry if this has been brought up before... didn't find anything helpful in a search.

[edit] If I remove the objects from the wall, or, at least, move the arrayed objects, and reinsert them into the wall, they show up. However, this is obviously less than ideal.

    thx

    Andrew

  7. I learned by hand, so I can't be fully objective.

I think, however, drawing by hand is undebatable - one must be able to draw by hand.

Let's not confuse drawing with drafting, though - whether using a burnt stick or a computer, if you don't know how to draft, neither will let you produce good work.

I'm actually surprised drafting isn't taught as a required part of all art and design classes; ask a graphic designer to sit down with a regular old ruler and divide a rectangle into 7 equal parts, and the ruler will receive some hard stares...

Personally, my ideal would be if I could have a giant table with a built-in touch screen, and still have all CAD functionality at hand, but... well... I could use my left hand to drag virtual t-squares and triangles and scales around, and draw with a stylus in my right...

    Just saying.

  8. Hi,

I've reached the part of tutorial 02 D and have been instructed to set the perspective view.

However, when I OK the perspective settings (40', 5', Normal) I simply get an empty perspective view...

[edit] I note that I cannot change the perspective with the flyover tool, either, before I try to create the viewpoint settings... looking into it..

    Any help appreciated

    thx

  9. I think the biggest factor in the uneasiness that comes from most software of this type is this:

Though you're creating what is, essentially, a 3D representation of a building, or whatever - you're still required to manage, separately, the details; that is, you can create a wall and how it's made, and you can lay out a 3d building using "that wall", but if you cut through the wall in that building, it's not actually taking a cross section of the detailed wall. It's two separate things (unless I'm missing something) and I think people would breathe easier if the software did indeed allow for cutting through a wall and showing either a solid fill at the cut line, or detail consistent with the wall type.

I'm still new to VW and just getting into the second of the Architectural training CDs, so I don't know much yet, but I will say that I believe 3D will "really catch on" once the virtual building is, essentially, comprised of the same parts as its real-world counterpart, and can be assembled/taken apart in a way which represents it in this way.

Oh, and, of course, getting there has to feel like hand-drafting [Wink]

  10. Hi Andrew-

    Uh... lol...

Yeah, I thought of that, believe it or not [smile]

    I get the error message

"This file is in an old format and not read by this version of the program...." etc.

Then... I realized they're actually old MiniCad files [Frown] (It says version 4-5)

So... from what I gather, I might be able to open these in VW8?

    Well... I'm gonna try.

    thanks

    Andrew

  11. Hi all-

Well, I would think this has been asked a million times but a search didn't turn up anything...

Basically, I just need to import 8.5.1 files (simple ones, too) into VW 12... if possible...

I couldn't wait on hold for tech support any more! [Wink]

    thx

    Andrew

  12. Hi all-

I'm just now going throught the Architect training CD..

In "Setting Up the File" (Project 01 A.mcd) I'm supposed to be extending the upper right of the Grid Bubble by using the 2D Reshape too and selecting "+", then selecting an endpoint of the existing grid bubble and dragging...

However, I cannot select the point on the existing grid bubble.

If anyone knows something I may be missing, or if there is trouble in this step of the tutorial (or whatever...) please let me know!

    Thanks in advance-

    Andrew

  13. Hi Mike -

    I'm over there a lot.

Just kind of surprising that the NNA Marketing folks haven't demanded one open up here.

I've been going through the boards, still holding my VW v.8, waiting to upgrade... a few glitches here and there (e.g. "borders" on windows" have made me hesitate a bit.

I'm not an architect (yet), either, but will most likely need to -not- have stuff like that happening for my uses.

Galleries may work to set potential buyers' minds at ease. Though, in the case of the window borders, I'm not sure.

Also, I like looking at pretty pictures [Wink]
