  1. Fred, I plot from a G4 running OS 9.1 and VW 9.5.0 (a FREE upgrade for all registered 9xx owners) to an HP DJ 230 (very similar machine to yours, I think) using MACPLOT RASTER DRIVER, via ethernet network & print server. Originally upon going to VW 9.5.0 I could not plot (sheets came out entirely black!). I was forced to quit 9.5.0 and open the file in 9.0.1 which then plotted fine, but it was a pain. So I was advised (by NNA) to update to CaronLib 1.5 (a Mac system resource available from apple for free) and that fixed everything. Then yesterday MacPlot sent me a small update (a "pdat" file) w/ installer for their driver. I was a little hesitant at first (cause if it aint broke...) but after a quick reconfigure everything is still fine. And by the way, I really like VW 9.5.0 (I hated 9.0.1-slow,etc). I hope this was helpful. PLC

  2. I may be mistaken, but I seem to remember reading somewhere (on Adobe's website?) that ATM is not and will not ever be OSX compatible. In fact, now that i think about it, Adobe refers us to other font manager software, complete with links, on that page. Check it out, and let me know if you get the chance. :--) PLC

  4. JNR, I'm mainly just curious, but wondering if you're using a symbol or Plug-in (or what) for these "cut wood" sections. Is it the same one in each case (so that in each case it's exploding) or is there somrthing else going on? I have had somewhat similar problems with translation from v8 (but fortunately none lately) most of which were caused by using corrupt, or an even older version symbol or PIO. Sometimes it had to do with class settings which imported with the objects. The techies need to know about your problem. They will probably be able to help. PLC

  5. JNR, this may not make your life any easier, but we need to keep in mind what one of my best VW instructors said: "Remember that this stuff is all really new and in many respects highly experimental". While I often hate the fact that I paid $$ for something that is often baffling, there are enough positives and they usually outweigh the negatives. When I look at drawings of mine from just a couple years ago the difference is dramatic! Happy New Year! PLC

  6. My opinion: Update your MAC OS to version 9.1 . It is fairly stable and will run 99% of any Mac software, including VW 9.5 (although printing is a work in progress. Keep a copy of VW 9.0.1). You can get the 9.1 OS from apple's website. Like any major upgrade there will probably be bugs and kinks (extension conflicts) to work through. Do not despair. It might take a couple of days of frustration, but in the end you will be happy! PLC (G4/450DP)

  7. Output the the key to our business. Contractors need paper plans. Over the years it is crazy how much trouble it has been to simply print a set of sheets. Just when I think it's gotten better, it gets worse (e.g.: no Mac- -plotting from carbonized apps). It would be great if there was someone who understood all the issues and would assist us in an ongoing manner. Thanks! PLC

  8. mnelson, GOOD QUESTION! What if you used a modified version of the "soil" hatch. You could scale it up or down to make it different from soil, or add a different background color. In fact you could use a different background shade with the concrete fill as well. PLC

  9. A layer link is an object made up of other objects. For example, if you have a layer for your main level plan and a layer for your upper level plan, you can link the two in a third layer. The object that is generated is the "link". Careful when ungrouping and changing stuff in a link, those changes will not occur in the original layers. I usually like to go into the original layers to make changes, which WILL be reflected in the linked layer. Hope this helps. PLC

  10. FJ, No that's not what I said. Please read it again and read what Paul Pharr said. In a nutshell: I can plot w/ MacPlot, BUT not from 9.5.0. I can work in 9.5.0 and then open the document in 9.0.1 and plot just like before. AND MORE IMPORTANT: the guys at MacPlot and NNA know what the problem is and are working on a PDAT resource for MacPlot, which ought to take care of the problem. I'm reminded of something a very knowledgeable VW Instructor told me: "Remember," she said."All this stuff is really new and in many ways highly experimental." Think back to how you were drawing five or ten years ago. It's amazing that any of these new things work at all! PLC

  11. Okay. I found out today that I cannot plot to my HP DesignJet 230 from VWA 9.5.0 (MAC) It comes out as a completely black sheet (what a waste of ink!). After much hair-pulling and whining I got a very concise response from NNA Tech Support. They told me that MacPlot cannot yet print from cabonized apps (VW 9.5.0 is carbonized). There is a work-around: when you get ready to print, quit 9.5.0 and then open 9.0.1 and then open the document you wish to print from within 9.0.1. It seems to work fine. I was told that MicroSpot is working on an update to solve this. Let's hope.

  12. Modeling roofs (I've always thought it should be 'rooves', oh well) is by far one of the most advanced and trickiest thing to do. If (and I suspect this is a big IF) all your roof faces are at the same pitch, you can draw each face as a polygon with 45? angles, etc., and use the 'create roof face from polygon tool'. If your roof contains faces with different slopes this will involve a lot of trial and error (angles other than 45? will need to be used). One way I've had success is to build the roof in the model as I would in the field. For example, if there is a dominant roof which will be built first as, say a gable and then other roof pieces which will be framed over the dominant one, I build it just like that in the computer. Then, by adjusting grays / colors / light direction & strenth, when I render it, it shows the intersections (valleys) some of which are actually overlapped with each other. This gives me an exterior model that is acurate, but will not be accurate inside (if there is a vaulted ceiling for instance) Sometimes I give up and do one of two things: build a foam-board model (like the old days!) or draw in 2D. I hope this helps at least a little. Good luck and Happy Holidays! PLC

  13. Okay, I found it. In VW 8.5.2 go to: TOOLKIT>ARCHITECTURAL>SYMBOLS>02-SiteWork>Cars & Trucks. There is one 3d car symbol. It is probably too long. Put one on your drawing, select it, then go to "Edit Symbol". In the Edit Symbol area you will see that the car is just a group. Pull it to the dimension you want (or make other modifications) and then exit symbol. This ought to give you a reasonable facsimile. If you want a better selection you can purchase lots of symbols, including cars & trucks from imagecels.com. Happy Holidays from Oregon USA PLC

  14. Thanks to all the hard-working guys & gals at NNA! 9.5.0 seems to be everything we have asked for lo these many months. The installation was easy and seamless. Over a broad-band internet connection it took about four minutes to download and nearly twice that to install (I wouldn't recommend doing it via phone lines as the estimated download time was hours). The program is way faster and most of the bugs from 9.0.1 seem to have been fixed. Thanks a million! Keep up the good work.

    HAPPY HOLIDAYS!PLC
