Hey guys, Now I'm thinking maybe it's just easier to create the existing and demo drawings on 1 file and then copy that file and create the new construction on a 2nd file.
The process of re-drawing walls and windows is too tedious.
I'm trying to incorporate this new type of BIM drawing method into our office. I don't want to confuse everyone by having the files to cluttered. I know it is probably possible to create a file that can create all the drawings I need. Although, I wonder if it is the right solution just because the program can possibly do it.
Any thoughts on that? Thanks for all your help so far

Does anyone know how I can create a window in a wall that is dotted in and still allows me to see the wall underneath?
-
NURBS - check your Vectorworks Help file. they should be able to produce that object fairly quickly.

Yeah including a legend is a good idea. The reason I am creating the new classes is so I can adjust what my walls will look like graphically, such as poche. Thanks Wes.

I start a lot of projects with Existing Conditions. When I begin my Construction Documents I need to create Demolition Plans. So here is my question.
If the walls I draw are put into classes such as Walls-Exterior and Walls-Interior How do I go about graphically distinguishing walls that will remain and walls that will be removed.
So far I figure the following process would work. I am just not sure if there is a better way.
If you see anything wrong with the following process please let me know:
1. Draw my existing conditions
2. Use the trim tool to cut my walls (at the points where demolition will begin\end)
3. Create a new class for my demolished walls
4. Select all the walls that will be demolished.
5. Go to the Object Info Palette and place the demolished walls on the newly created class.
6. Create a new viewport and with the newly created class I should be able to differentiate between walls that will remain and walls that will be removed.
*This process should also work to distinguish existing walls from newly constructed walls.

Richard,
Can you further explain what you mean by
"you can only create one sheet of a particular type"?
I was able to create a Standard Viewport which allowed me to include custom classes and custom design layers. I was also able to edit how other layers and classes were effected by the default standard viewports.
I don't know if I can play with this again until next week but, i will be sure to keep you informed.

really? I figured I could use it to make custom sheets which would create standard viewports with the layers, classes, and class attributes that I need. I seem to be making some good progress. I'll let you know how it works out.

found something Design Series manual Appendix C.
Anyone have any experience with Standards?

Hey Pat,
Where would I submit this image? Is there a email address or an online form I can fill out?
-
Wow never realized that each viewport has it's own specific class attributes. Thats Killer! Thanks Dudes!
-
Hey Donne! thanks I believe this update fixed my problem!!!
Woo Hoo!!

Is there a way to create a custom standard viewport? Or is there a way to edit standard viewports?

When I'm trying to create my drawings I'm having a problem with line weights.
I want my walls to be drawn with a 16 mil line in plan and a 4 mil line in elevation. I seem to be having a problem getting this to work. It seems that whenever I have a 16 mil line in plan it is also a 16 mil line in elevation. does anyone know how to go about fixing this problem?

Has anyone had the problem of VectorWorks 2008 crashing when attempting to edit classes? This happens more often then not.
-
I got it work. Thanks!
Another problem I ran into was when I was trying to use this window on a custom wall style I had created. I created a custom wall style that used a solid fill with a grey color. When I placed the window in the wall I had white blocks on either side of the window. After messing around with the window for awhile i realized that you can't use a custom wall style that uses a "Solid" fill. You need to use a wall style that uses a "Hatch". Otherwise you will get these white blocks on either side. Check out the attached pic.

Thanks for your help Damon. Newb question> Is OIP Object Info Pallete?
I was hoping that if the window was solely a 3d symbol it would automatically be rotated to the proper Roof Slope. I'll keep messing around.
Thanks Again

the problem is all the window symbols i seem to be finding are hybrid symbols.
When I go to insert the skylight it cuts the hole, but it tells me I can't insert the symbol. The book confirmed that if I want to be able to see the symbol in the model in must be soley a 3d Symbol and not a Hybrid

Yes SVWWO

I've been looking around my installed libraries to try and find some 3d window symbols to use as skylights. I can only seem to find Hybrid symbols. Anyone know where I might find the little buggers?

Hey thanks guys!
robert I tried everything you had suggested but how can I edit the component wrapping on a default window? the component wrapping point you talk about are 2D loci? if so how do i edit them?
Pat I downloaded the Guide and will try to take an indepth look at it over the weekend. Thanks!

Hey guys, Yeah I have had some programming experiance. I took basic and pascal in highschool. always had fun creating programs on my calculator. I took C++ in college and have messed around with maxscripts and mels before. I think I even attempted ruby once.
I'm attaching an image file of the problem I'm trying to solve.
The company I work for has only worked in vectorworks in a 2d format. We just purchased VW 2008 and we are trying to get up to speed with the BIM aspects of VW. Our office prides ourselves on the way our drawings look and you can see the difference between the two windows in the image file. The default window does not technically look correct in plan where the modified marvin window does.
Thanks for all your help.

I want to be to create a 2d/3d window symbol that allows me to do the same thing default windows allow me to do (customize window width, window height, trim size, wall depth, mullion patterns, etc. ..) is this possible?
-
Is it possible to write a VectorScript that will allow me to edit a symbol? Are there any tutorials on this subject?
-
I know I can create a Hybrid 2D/3D symbol but, is there a way to create a hybrid symbol that has plugin capabilities?
I would like to create a custom Hybrid Symbol that I can double click and prompt me with the "Window Settings" dialog box.
Do I have to write a custom script?
Change the Default look of Schedules and Legends?

Every time I create a window schedule I get the same default text 'Arial'. I also have to go in and change the font, size and style. Is it possible to change these default settings so I do not have to change them every time I create a schedule?
Also, has anyone had any experience customizing a worksheet? The default window schedule includes some information that we do not require. Is there a way to remove or add items and create my very own default schedule?
