How can I convert multiple lighting device objects back to symbols

I've tried this before. It doesn't actually reduce the amount of data VW sifts through. I'm talking about stripping objects of their "lighting device" status entirely. -
I know how to convert multiple objects FROM symbols TO lighting devices, but is there a way to do this in reverse? I'm trying to simplify a document that will need 20k+ lighting devices.
