  1. How to access the SSP, can't find a clue anywhere? Thanks.
  2. Anyone know what this light fixture type is? Thanks,
  3. Any body aware of a method of rounding area to whole inches. I've set drawing units to 4 digits and now the space tool is giving me areas of rooms to the 10,000ths. Can't find a rounding control. Thanks,
  4. Thanks, Tamsin. I had auto-classing off in the source document but not off in the target doc.
  5. I'm having trouble controlling class designations. I've noticed that some types of objects, usually plug-ins, are resistive to class reassignment ie. millwork will not accept a change of class. Just now I'm finding that the reference marker placed in a 'notes' class will not allow me to change it to 'markers' class. The reference shruges off the attempt and promptly returns to it's former class. Any suggestions? Thanks.
  6. I seem to be getting a series of odd behaviors such as: eye dropper will not change class and graphic attributes in walls, switching from layer to layer has become difficult - sometimes the new layer will be seen briefly then suddenly default to the old layer, repeatedly, changes to title blocks don't update and similarly turning on new layers doesn't work sometimes. The later could be graphics card related - could all of this be the result of a graphic card and VW2011 update on my old MacPro?
  7. Thanks all. Actually, no it hasn't worked as yet. I'm wondering if the unit resolution setting has anything to do with the precision of setting objects. For instance, would the stacking improve if the dimension unit resolution was set to .001 instead of .1?
  8. It seems odd to me that after using this program for so long I still find it difficult to do some straight forward and simple things. For instance, I am working with an old brick house, 1750, the walls are slightly skewed and need to show with a flush brick face from lower to upper floor. It seems that no matter how carefully I place the upper walls to stack above the lower, I still get a line at the floor when rendering in hidden line. Any recommendations for a simple fix?
  9. I installed VW2011 and am getting the "file cannot be opened because it requires a product that is not activated... " error message each time the application is booted. Also get it when a file is opened. I have no favorites. Yes, I did make the mistake of loading the demo version. Is there a way to fix this?
  10. This tool never seems to work. I just made a 12' line, selected the std tool and set loci at third points - results were: 3'11.52", 4' 0.96, and 3' 11.52! On a 99' 3.8" line the error was off by 12" - 32' 9.31", 33 9.229", 32' 9.31. Is there something about snap settings or other constraints that I need to know about? This has been a problem for over 15 years that I know of. I appreciate your comments.

    Transom Render

Thanks, Peter. The confusion could be clarified by listing setting as "Sidelight/Transom..."
  12. I don't seem to be able to find the controls for door transoms in 2008. Glass panel setting for door does not seem to control and there doesn't seem to be a separate control in settings. Your help is appreciated.
  13. Am I missing something here - I can't find and renderworks backgrounds. (?) Sure could use some decent sky backdrops and urban skylines or a discussion on how to fabricate.
  14. Am having trouble using working planes. It seems that setting up the plane and selecting a plane to work on does not confine the drawing to the working, in fact it seems nothing can confine the drawing to the working plane. Most of the time drawing/model element is more likely to be found on the ground plane. Must be a trick I'm missing, any suggestions? Note: I'm using VW2008.
  15. Hard to say where to start on this... I used PIOs doors and windows, which were symbolized, to create schematic designs. When developing drawings to CDs I have used revised symbols to more accurately show trim conditions, etc. In this process I have noticed that I am unsure which palette controls what. ie. - there's the OIP palette, the settings palette within the OIP palette, the window settings palette from edit, and the symbols settings palette. Where as, these palettes appear to be redundant it doesn't follow that the settings can be universally set with any of these. and because the data headers are often slightly different from each other multiple palettes need to be edited. As an example - the window heights were set in the OIP palette as 6'8" heads, the objects where symbolized, inserted, modified, and scheduled. In the scheduling process, marker numbers were assigned by double clicking to edit and to indicate show on schedule. In this process I noticed that the window heights are now set to reference sill heights, no amount of coaxing or threatening allows me to reset to 6'8" heads. No palette appears to be capable of editing this setting and the symbol settings indicate that the windows are still referencing a 6'8" head. And I find that the OIP shows that the sill elevations are set to varying heights which can only be modified by selecting the object and editing in the OIP. I assume that this is a sequence problem which I don't seem to be able to unravel reading the opinionless, nonsequential drivel in the manual. Your thoughts are appreciated.
  16. I'm in the process of going from schematics to CD's and replacing placeholder plug-ins with more accurate objects. Problem seems to be that now that the objects have been created I'm not able to control them, or more accurately I'm uncertain which palettes control. At this point the original symbols have some information and remnants of the preference settings. The OIP doesn't control, nor does the Settings palette with-in the OIP. Settings in both palettes such as frame sizes, appear in grey and cannot be overwritten. Any clarity would be appreciated.
  17. Thanks, Pat, et al. The script works well but I've been defeated regarding muntins. We have a limited number of default settings available in the OIP, none of which match the Pella muntin patterns - any suggestions here?
  18. I will also note that even with 35 Field Names in the window data palette, we don't seem to have one for muntin patterns although the VA schedule does have that category. When trying to work around by using the User Field 1, the result does not register, although if I use the Window Finish field name the data does show in the schedule. (?)
  19. Thanks, Pat. I'm trying to understand the correlation between the VA schedule and the window/door edit palette. You've noted previously that the data base header formula is '=recordname.fieldname' but I'm seeing a disconnect between the edit palette 'field name' and the schedule 'field name'. Is there a third data element?
  20. I had some trouble creating schedules from my symbols and decided to use doors and windows from the tool palette. Each item was edited and schedules were created with the VA Create Schedule Tool. Worked well enough but I've noticed that record formats were not created and fictitious data categories (such as sills) are showing up on the schedule which I cannot control since I can't find the source. Anyone familiar with this phenomenon? Thanks for your insights in advance.
  21. Have you thought about opening your manual for user editing? The simplest edit needing attention is the Index - it needs to be thorough and inclusive. The other simple idea is to allow a more robust 'recipe' approach for tasks. The objective and meandering discourse currently used for complex tasks seems appropriate when studying but is often less than useful when trying to solve problems under the gun or when learning new work patterns.
  22. Thanks for the above. Perhaps it would help if I outlined my situation. First off, the white paper for the Ellicott Heights BIM is the most lucid account I've seen for designing the BIM/WGRef model and much of that information is applicable here but my most recent project is more akin to Alexandria Laundry Lofts. Currently, I am working on six urban row houses on three sites. I have designed two housing types which will be combined as needed. Two of the sites are infill and attached on two sides, the third is a semi-detached double. I will model all and draft the structural in 2 and 3D as needed for sectional information. Mechanical and Electrical (MEP) will be imported in 2D from consultants .dwg's. Two persons will compose my project team, the master file is located on a server. I'm thinking of a horizontal data set. I would like to produce all levels, on three different sites, on a single assigned design layer and VP them to the proper sheets to produce a plan, section, elevation. etc. drawing set for each address. Work flow is probably divided between interior and exterior with plans, schedules and sections by one person and elevations and site planning, zoning, code, notes, etc. by another. The overlap will occur at the exterior skin and I assume we would work on alternate sites to coordinate. I have established a template with project setups which include the classes, layers, sheets, viewports. It also includes the schematic plans, elevations and massing model. Symbols, textures, hatches, and wall styles have yet to be constructed. I gather that the file now needs to be copied and renamed as necessary to start the Design Development and the WGR files. Any suggestions thus far?
  23. Thanks, guys, I'm chastened and going through the information systematically.
  24. Thanks brudgers but I wasn't looking for page layouts. The above file is a pdf of a large project and doesn't really address the mechanics of setting up WGRef's. As a starting point, can anyone tell me, or point me to an article on, how a new work station would set up a new file and prepare to reference the master file and add information to the master? When I follow the lesson in the Design Series manual, (design layer viewport), the scale is screwed up, layers and classes do not automatically establish, and most critically updates to the reference file do not take place when exiting or opening the target file. Thanks for your help.
