Thank you for your reply - I am impressed that you are working at 6:21pm on a Sunday evening!

However, I don't understand your reply - the 2 respondents above imply that they can copy and paste as I want to, so why can't I?

I don't use keyboard shortcuts, my memory is incapable of remembering the 1001 possible commands!

Why though isn't the paste menu active when I am in a dialog box (I assume you mean Rotate)? To me, that's the intuitive way to do it - select the text, copy it, select the object I want to rotate, paste the text into the Rotate box. This box is highlighted, so it is ready for text - why can't it accept text from the Copy memory?

  2. Many topics on this board wind up by asking for yet another new tool - me, I would settle for some of the very elementary ones to work properly.

Take Copy & Paste - say you have a line drawn at a certain angle and you want to rotate another object, say a rectangle, to match. You select the line, and Copy the angle text from the OIP. Then you select the rectangle, go to Rotate and try to Paste in the text angle you copied - but you can't. Paste is greyed out, you have to physically type in the angle.

What about Find/Replace Text? Surely that would work? No it doesn't, you have to type in the text you want to change as well as the corrected version, you can't Paste into either box.

I hope someone can tell me I'm wrong and I'm doing something wrong!

  3. Modocker - welcome to the forums.

Rule no 1: there are no stupid/dumb/daft questions, we are all in the learning phase.

It would help in future though if you make yourself a signature like Christiaan, then readers can figure out if the problem is computer or software or version related.

    Good luck!

  4. 1. Welcome to the VectorWorks forum.

    2. Use lower case, DON'T SHOUT!

    3. It is useful to other forum users to add a note of what computer and software you are using.

    4. This is a forum for VectorWorks users, not for comparisons between CAD programs, which is going to be like comparing apples with oranges anyway.

    5. If you know this is a regular topic, use the Search facility before posting, so you can frame a new question.

    I agree with Jonathan.

I am not sure I quite understand what you have designed, but assuming it is a longish wall of repetitive units:

If the rack dimensions depend on the case size, then I would delete all the cases you have drawn except for one, correct that one and make it a Symbol (Create Symbol), draw a vertical stack of cases (Duplicate Array) plus racking (you could make the stack the symbol if you prefer), use Duplicate Array to create as many side by side stacks as you need.

Then in future you only have to edit one case or stack - if the width of stack changes you will have to delete all rack except the first and redo using Duplicate Array.

Having the stack as the symbol means you could have different versions (empty cells, shelves, different widths, etc) wherever you like.

  6. Just to report back - the upgrade went perfectly smoothly, to the point where I sat there at the end and thought "is that all there is to it?". I think my surprise is from all those years of upgrading programs (not just VectorWorks) where you needed to set aside at least a day to sort out the chaos that seemed to inevitably follow.

I like the new workspace layout, and I especially like the vastly improved printing - round pen and crisper lines. I know that it should have been like that before, but it's good to have it now.

The only slight problem I have had is that when I open an existing file in VW12, some text in my title block that I reuse on each job tends to appear in Geneva font instead of Tekton Pro, but it only takes a couple of keystrokes to correct that.

I still wish that VW would zoom to the point where I click and not to the centre (that is so annoying on a long line!), and I would like the Attributes palette to be bigger, but v13 can't be far away ................

  7. I am trying to open a.dxf file from a surveyor, he assures me it is in an older version of Autocad, ie not the latest.

I have tried both multi and single file imports, but almost immediately get the message

    OpenDWG Library Error 287:

    Internal Error

The failure report says the import failed for unknown reasons.

This happens in both v11.5 and 12.5.

Does anybody know what this means?

    Welcome to the techboard!

It is a huge help to all the people who read these boards and who are keen to assist, if you could include a summary of your computer system with your post, like Benson Shaw has done.

If you go to My Stuff at the top of this board and click on My Profile, you can write a signature that describes your system, then each time you post, readers and helpers can see what you are using - often the problems are related to either PC or Mac, or the particular version of VW that you are on, so it saves a lot of time and speculation.

  9. I am about to upgrade to VW Designer 12.5.1 from v11.5.

What should I do before inserting the first disk, apart from running my usual Retrospect backup to an external drive, and Repairing Permissions?

Once installed, is it possible to finish present projects using v11.5, or do all job files automatically open in v12.5?

The workspace appears different - what changes should I expect?

I now have several versions of VW on my Mac (8, 10, 11) - is there any point in keeping them, or is it possible to open old files in the version that created them?

  10. I use MacJanitor, and I think it only does the things that Mac computers do themselves if they are left on at night, and not all of the tasks Fsung lists.

I also have DiskWarrior 4.0, which has to be paid for, but it is an excellent program for Macs, and IMHO is the only maintenance program you need unless you are a computer/software engineer. Its (new) permissions rebuild seems more comprehensive than Disk Utility.

I run them both at least once a week as part of a regular clearout and backup routine.

  11. I'm afraid I don't like your chances, particularly the usable bit.

I have many ClarisCAD files from when I first started computer design & drafting - ClarisCAD got into trouble I seem to dimly remember for allegedly having copied AV code, and was taken off the market. Users were encouraged to buy AV, but I kept on for some time before buying VectorWorks.

The trouble with my old files is that I can convert them and open in VW but the data is so inaccurate that everything has to be redrawn anyway. I think it's something to do with 16 vs 32 bits, or 64, whatever it is with the current VW. All you get is a collection of lines, which look vaguely like the old drawings (all in 2D of course) but line lengths, direction and placement are so inexact that all you can do is draw over them and then delete. It's moot whether it's faster to simply start again.

Some Macs (mine for instance) have Classic already installed and it opens when you click on an old file. I then copy from each sheet in the ClarisCAD file and paste into a new VW drawing, on another, visible, layer - changing the old line colour helps to distinguish between old and new.

It's a sloooooow process, hence I only do it if there is no other choice.

    I hope that helps.

  12. Thank you.

The printer driver is HP 3.1 which I think is current, and the PPD file version is 1.0.

How can I check if the system is set up for RGB?

Can you also tell me if v12.5 corrects the square pen/round pen problem, so angled lines print at the same width as horizontal or vertical lines?

  13. This sounds highly promising, but my HP110 was hooked up by the supplier so I am not sure what they did:

    1. How can I tell which drivers I am using?

    2. Where are the printer settings?

Katie, can I say thank you for all your support and patience you have shown to us users throughout the year, you have been fantastic.

  14. Sometimes you have to resort to old fashioned geometry or trigonometry using pencil on paper, but if the roofs are not at right angles that can be beyond most of us.

It may help if you colour the roofs (ie not white) so they show better in 3D, even a different colour for each face.

  15. Pete & Jim

The point I was trying to make, obviously badly, was that if it is difficult to draw, it is probably going to be difficult to build, and the program is indicating that . The danger is that just finding a work around in VW only postpones the problem to the building phase, where you will be confronted by a builder who wants to know how to build it and an owner who wants to know who is going to pay the extra. Better to work out how to detail it first, then you have a way to draw it and build it.

How is the door to be made? Is it going to have curved sill, leaves (glass?) and head, or is it going to an have extra wide head and sill? If the latter, is it OK if the jambs project outside or the sill projects inside? How will the door be weathered? How do the wall claddings and linings meet the frame? Once those kinds of things are decided, then it's time to look at how to draw it.

I am not advocating limiting anyone's imagination, quite the contrary, I am saying that the program (any program) is limiting in itself, and may also seduce you into thinking that because you have found a way to draw something, it's all plain sailing from there on. I try to concentrate on the actual building process and not the virtual drawing program because once you have solved the building details, you may well have solved the drawing problem.
