  1. Thanks for your suggestions with this topic, I managed to get it working with the masking method suggested, it works a treat. Viper x
  2. Katie, any ideas please ?
  3. Hi Jason, I am not using a hatch and the leaking happens with all drawings. I have read all the archives and there seems to be others with memory leaks as well but as yet no definitive explanation has been offered as to why this debilitating problem is occurring. Thanks for the suggestions Jason. Viper x ps. This is the hatch problem you are refering to I believe Jason, I am already using 10.5.1 so this problem should have been rectified: "Hi Colin, Thanks for the file. The issue causing the leaks is the hatching applied to your walls. If you remove that, then the leaks disappear. We have prioritized this fix for 10.5.1. Until then, you can use cavity fills, patterns, colors, or class attributes with hatching to work around the problem. Thanks! -------------------- Paul C. 4. Thanks for replying. I have not downloaded SP2 as yet for XP so this can not be the culprit. The leakage is astonding, you can just sit there and watch the memory tick away. You can understand how the system will slow down and then eventually crash. Any other ideas would be helpful. Thanks Viper x [ 10-18-2004, 05:22 PM: Message edited by: Viper x ]
  5. I am experiencing big slow downs and then crashes. Looking at the performance the memory usage is just steadily climbing, and climbing whether I have a file open or not, with a file open it just climbs faster. As I work VW slows down until it crashes on its own accord, this is not funny I had a nvida ti 4200 which I have updated with the latest driver. This has not helped at all. When I shut the software down and restart it speeds up again until it begins to steadily climb yet again. I am running 10.5.1 I have all other applications closed. I am on a pc pentium 4 with 80g hard drive and 560mg ram Q. 1. Is 10.5.1 known for this problem ? 2.Is there anything other than the driver I can do ? 3. Has VW11 eliminated this problem ? 4. There is no further updates to VW10 beyond 10.5.1 is there ? Thanks Viper x [ 10-18-2004, 08:28 AM: Message edited by: Viper x ]
  6. I e-mail the VW file to a print shop who has a viewer and they print with no problems as long as they don't have to undertake any work on the file. I have been told by VW that plot files are not the best choice as they are very limited in their ability to print anything more than simple drawings and of course VW can contain much more complex finishes. As for bugs, yes I can save the drawing and then practice these new options but not when I have a approaching deadline for full tender drawings looming, you just have to read the tech board and see many clever people than me grappling with unforeseen problems every day, keep it simple, one step at a time is what I learnt with this software, otherwise there can be tears . As for pdf's I have only known Acrobat as the program to use so I will look into the other suggestions. The pdf path is tempting as print shops just are not interested in messing around with VW and the viewer. Thanks for all the help [ 10-08-2004, 07:59 AM: Message edited by: Viper x ]
  7. Trouble with PDF is you require a full version of Acrobat for a start, also many print shops are only accepting plt files and most don't want anything to do with VW. Thanks for your help I will look into masking but to be honest I am so nervous of hidden bugs and the like I am reluctant to try anything new until this job is out. I realise the copy and paste is crude but it is foolproof it seems. Viper x

"....yes, and use the 'workgroup reference' tool! you would have a reference file you work in, and a target file for printing only." Workgroup reference is a great tool, the problem with it is if you attempt to use the move page tool "odd" things happen to workgroup referenced objects when the move page tool is used. The reference needs to be "broken" prior to the use of the move page tool. This may be fixed in 11(?) but up to VW10 it was a problem that requires a work around. This the type of unforeseen problems I have encountered on my VW journey and why I am very nervous trying new moves whilst a "real" drawing is at stake, when you have deadlines hanging above your head it is just scary. Great info all the same and I will try these moves in time.
  9. I do need 3 seperate pieces of paper, each one A1 and at 1:100. You suggestion sounds good but each sheet also needs a title block and each sheet needs lots of the same notations on them, so it may be just as easy to copy the full A1 drawing under 3 names and delete the portions I don't need. The other scary thing is the drawings need to be sent to commercial print shops and believe me they will do nothing other than push a button so I am loath to give them anything but the complete drawing to print, already they resist dealing in VW and the viewer. And yes I am very encouraged by peoples interest. Learning this program can be at times.
  10. Woohhhh...... You are over estimating my expertise at this software. All those suggestions are sure to be excellent but one cannot head off attempting these new moves when hard copies need to out to tender in a day or so. Often learning new moves in this software can end up taking hours or more, not to mention the many posts I read elsewhere with people having problems with these very techniques My idea is to copy the relevant third of the drawing plus a small extra portion that is common to the sheets that would normally be joined, and then mark the cut with a dotted line, that way the cut line and extra bit is common to the different drawings and so loosing details in the cut line is not a problem. I can see there is much smarter ways to do it but they will have to wait until I have a week to practice without the frightening chance of getting into a panic with deadlines looming
  11. I am on VW 10. I need to keep it simple as I am still not an expert at VW. I have a finished town planning drawing that was drawn at 1:200 and prints perfectly on an A1 sheet. I now need to prepare a tender drawing but 1:200 is too small to read the planting details, so it has to be at 1:100 So I have copied a version of the drawing and changed the scale to 1:100 but of course it now requires to be cut in 3 sections to get the drawing on A1 sheets. Can I not just complete the tender drawing at 1:100 then copy and paste (using the rectangular selection tool) the 3 different sections of the entire drawing into 3 new A1 drawings? I know this is a simplistic approach but I have not got the time to learn and test more complex ways to do this at present. Thanks Viper x [ 10-06-2004, 06:30 AM: Message edited by: Viper x ]
  12. I have an A1 1:200 drawing that has to be presented at 1:100 and it means spliting the drawing onto 3 seperate sheets, is it just a matter of using the rectangular selection tool and copy then paste the sections indiviually onto new sheets or is there a smarter way ? Thanks Viper x
  13. Tried that for an existing plant symbol I am using but it had no effect. But it did work for a new plant I defined as a test. Any other ideas on how to fix all the already defined plant symbols please ? Thanks Viper x
  14. I went to page > set origin > set origin to centre of page >placed some new plants and there has been no change, tag is still 3 house blocks away. Was this the correct procedure to reset the origin ? Thanks Viper x
  15. When I place plants using 10.5 in the drawing the plant symbol is placing fine but the plant tags main pointer line is way, way outside the drawing area, so far out I can not even see it in the drawing window, these are the tags that you activate under "tag display" in the object info. I believe there is a setting to control the length of the main line, is this the case and if so where is it accessed please ? I have read responses about the "shoulder" length of the tag but not this main line length. Thanks Viper x [ 09-28-2004, 08:02 AM: Message edited by: Viper x ]
  16. Hey, I got that to work first time, amazing for me, thanks for your help.

  18. Does anyone know how to get that soft water coloured brushed effect on plant fills. Especially on plant fills but also for dipicting other soft landscape materials like lawns. I have played with the gradient tool but it does not give that water colour effect that is so good on soft landscape drawings. Thanks Viper
  19. It is a bug I was beginning to convince myself it was just me. Viper

I have a firewall but it is turned off and it is not Norton. 3. Straight forward placing plants, line work adding fill colour. 4. Generally not, I just re-start VW. What is the issue with a firewall ? Lately it is getting worse, I am now getting "low memory" warnings then crashing and now I am also getting runtime errors and it crashes. Combine those two and you can imagine it is a nervous session on Vectorworks Anything I can look at to stabilise the situation Katie ? Thanks Viper. 21. So after much practice I have managed to : 1. I have a number of plants in the drawing that are just polyline circles (and not through the place plant tool) and I tried to change them into colour fill and bingo it worked perfectly by changing the class from none to fill/colour in the class dialog box. This is what I have tried to do with all the other plants in the drawing but it will not work. 2. So I used the same steps to try again to change all the plants in the drawing that were placed through the place plant tool, the exact same steps but again it does not work ! ie the plants in the drawing do not have a fill of colour. I am not suprised because, when I went through the process with the plain circles a dialog box popped up asking whether "I want to set all objects already created to take on the new attributes" I ticked yes and bingo all the circles became coloured. But when I tried the same thing with all the plants placed through the place plant tool this dialog box never came up. To answer your question Robert, yes I had ticked "Use at Creation" box checked for both the plant symbol types. So what the hell is going wrong ? Can I in fact achieve what I asking for which is : Can I change dozens and dozens of plants on a drawing (which are all in the same class by the way) from plants with no fill to all with coloured fill in one hit through editing the class ? It worked for the simple circles first attempt. Why does it not work for the plants inserted in the drawing using the "place plant tool" Thanks Viper. Searching the data base, does this have something to do with my problem : ie What should "None" class be set to ? Are not plant symbols made up of 2 classes , one being "none" and one being the class you put the symbols in, if so is "none" class the fill or is it the line work ? http://techboard.nemetschek.net/cgi/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t=000150 Quote: "THAT was it. Things work now. Out of curiosity, what other problems does have the none class's "use at creation" box checked create? I had never heard not to do so." "There's a minor bug in Setup in 10.0 that causes this flag to be set on. It causes plug-in objects (such as roads) to be non-colorable. I should have thought of this before (note to self: slap self in forehead.) " Note: I checked the "None" class in the drawing and "use at creation" box was not checked. Also I have no problem filling these troublesome plants with colour via the attributes pallette, but I can not get them too take on colour all in one hit via editing the class. I am sure it is something stupid I have done but what on earth is it. [ 08-08-2004, 10:12 AM: Message edited by: Viper x ]

Why not just try it and see what it does?) I am trying, constantly, but it is not as clear to some as it is to others. You have to appreciate that my skills (and others I would surmise from reading this board) do not lie in CAD as such, but at the heart of "landscape Design" which is Horticulture. Ask me about the growing conditions of some thousands of plants and I too would come across as an expert, but as can be seen CAD skills is a necessary evil required to express those horticultural skills. My inate skill is in designing and cultivating plants in a landscape not in technical CAD drafting, they are skills and mind sets planets away from each other, so as a result I find CAD challenging. What you are experiencing is me struggling to do both Viper [ 08-06-2004, 09:55 AM: Message edited by: Viper x ]
  23. This is where I am confused. I have made test plants in a drawing in a new class that has "fill set to none" as I want because most drawing are just line work. I then go to the class dialog box and edit the class and change it to a colour > click Ok > go back to the drawing and the plants in that class have not changed to coloured fill ? I even move the plants to re generate but they don't not change. So I am thinking I can not "post" change the plants already on the drawing to coloured fill by editing the class dialog box, but only subsequent plants will be coloured and filled so I try placing new plants in the drawing but they still do not have colour. ? 24. quote: Originally posted by Robert Anderson: You're asking for two things that are really unrelated: 1. The ability to turn off color. (This is easy -- it's a document preference called "Black and White only") 2. The ability to change the color of an entire category of objects at a time. For this you use attributes by class as I previously described. Class all the plants you want similarly colored, and use the class color to control them. Number 1. I have not tried this but are you suggesting creating all the plants from the outset with the desired fill colour and then tick the "black and white only" box in document preferences ? Does this remove the fill or just make the fill.....well "black and white" ? Bear with me as adding colour to a drawing is a new journey for this black duck. thanks Viper
