  1. We have an opportunity to put our thoughts forward regarding our wish list for the ongoing development of Landmark.

(Some ideas may have been partially addresses in vw12 but post all thoughts please)

For landmark as a landscape design tool in general and for individual components of the software.

For me being a soft landscape specialist it is the place plant tool and the PRD that is most important.

    1. Make both stable, reliable and much faster than they presently are.

    2. Many more options for fill and colour, especially plant symbol texture, ie softer more natural looking effects and hard surface texture like standard functions like asphalt, concrete, paving, mulched ground, etc,

These need to be easily picked up from a pallette not have to be built by the user, all these surfaces are standard treatments and as such need to be on hand.

    3. PRD needs to be faster and easier to modify.

    4. Not specifically landmark but ease in pasting word text into vw where it holds its formatting.

These are just a few thoughts.

But this is your chance to have some input into where landmark is going, so please post all your ideas.

  2. These are my ideas for the forum.

    Step 1.

I am sure the forums tie up valuable time of already busy techs, so like other forums some volunteer moderators should be put in place who can undertake straightforward tasks like these below.

    1. It would be very beneficial for new people to have a dedicated forum on the board, call it a "New to VW knowledge bank" or similar where answers to the basic setup questions are stored, plus new threads covering often asked beginner questions.

This would help new people a lot and it would also help the board as they can be quickly directed to this forum

    2. A bug forum, where known bugs and gliches can be posted so time after time people do not have to stumble upon the same problems.

    3. The knowledge bank /FAQ forum needs to be regularly updated with answers to common tech questions, like " How to make a plot file" etc, etc

The forums are a much appreciated resource, lets make them better. [smile]

  3. 1. Run through the tutorials.

    2. And if you are really into self abuse, read the manual. [big Grin]

    3. Play as you go.

    4. Reference problems you might have along the way by searching and reading the forums here.

    5. Don't be afraid to ask any question here on the forum ( try to search for answers in old threads first, lots of stuff is already here)

And one for the tech board admins :

    6. It would be very beneficial for new people to have a dedicated forum on the board, call it a "New to VW knowledge bank" or similar where answers to the basic setup questions are stored, plus new threads covering often asked beginner questions.

This would help new people a lot and it would also help the board as they can be quickly directed to this forum.

    Thanks Viper

  4. OK I checked and all the plants and surfaces have colour assigned by class.

So I had a go at changing a group of plants from say green to red, minutes and minutes and at the same time the task bar showed the PF bar racing up to 2g [Eek!] next to VW application.

    The colours changed, just.....

VW normally gives me a "run out of memory" message at around 1.6g.

Next I tried to change the same plants to a gradient I had created, the PF bar then raced to again towards 2g and then it just gave up and did not change the colour.

I tested it on a single plant and it work, not fast but it worked.

Clearly the software (well mine at least) can not handle this task.

    Anyone else experienced similar ?

  5. Hi,

Note( I am also trying find Alanmac's posts on this as we speak)

OK so I am now trying through print:

So I downloaded the free pdf creator as suggested pdf995

    1. I open the drawing in vw.

    2. I open the print setup I choose pdf995

    3. I hit OK and I do not get asked anything, rather the document goes off and spools and then prints on my little A4 Hp in multiple sheets.

I know I am missing something here ?

The little hp is shared by 2 computers in the office so I have turned off shared printer, but still no luck.

  6. I know this has beeen asked before and I have a done a search.........

So I downloaed the free pdf creator as suggested pdf995

    1. I open the drawing in vw.

    2. I open the export box and I choose export as a image file.

    3. That box opens and I choose BMP file type and then it saves it as a bitmap.

Is this the correct process ?

As PDF is not available on any of these steps is image file > BMP a pdf ?

  7. I am trying to change fill colour via class attributes, I can get it to work for say one filled plant or a couple at best, but....

When I try to change a large group of plants or an expanse of road fill, or paving fill etc, this is what happens :

    1. I change the default colour via class.

    2. I click OK.

    3. Program salt shaker hangs, quivers, shakes and generally looks very very scared

    4. Drawing restores, cursor is active again.

Problem - colour has not changed !

Now I read about having to refresh the drawing.

    Questions :

    1. Should not the colours change without having to refresh ?

    2. If I have to refresh what is the best way to do it ?

  8. Thanks Paul, great to read your post.

I will report back regularly with observations.

I hit a new record today when the PF reading soared to 1.8g the system locked then crashed in a smouldering heap !

I was trying to change the fill for some plants via the class setting.

I work a lot with the place plant tool and the problematic Plant Reference database and I think this is the root of my constant memory leaks and crashes.

    Viper

  9. Thanks for you response John.

Firstly I will look into your suggestions and I will definately increase my RAM.

    But........

Doing the things you have suggested is like throwing water on a fire without shutting down the source, ie there is still clearly a basic problem with the program.

Why is it leaking such memory in the first place ?

Does other peoples system leak memory, over an hour or 2's work does your response rate slow down ?

  10. VW crashed yet again, as has done regularly.

It is definately due to VW leaking memory.

I have the windows task bar open and I sit and watch the PF bar creep up and up and up. (no other application is running)

As it creeps up VW slows and begins to hang.

    As it reaches 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 then around 1.7g = BANG !

I get an "OUT OF MEMORY" message and VW shuts down on its own accord.

This very problem has been asked on a regular basis on the forum for maybe 2 years.

Has a a definitive answer been given yet as to what the problem is ?

Also when other people are running VW what is the common PF reading in task bar.

    Thanks Viper

  11. That is great news Katie.

Like most here I think having the base product stable is the most important thing, adding bells and whistles in updates whilst still retaining a shakey foundation has been a curse.

The place plant tool has been a scary, scary journey, I think a tech here has even said it requires a lot of feet paddling under the water to make it work, hence its unstable and slow behaviour.

I really really hope it has taken the leap it has so badly needed.

Importing a plant catalog just today sent the program into a fit of hanging, shaking, dribbling mess of a salt shaker, in the end it just shat itself and locked up !

You place rows of plants and just hang on, anything can result !

I do hope 12 has stepped up. [smile]

  12. Nice one Marietta, stacking the layers works a treat [smile]

Thanks for your responses, you are always patience with those of us who's skills lie somewhere other than the Cad drafting side of design.

Now back to those different highlight little squares that caused me not to be able to move the symbol forward or back, any ideas what I did to cause them ?
