    Well Bruce, I use the setup assistant all the time. I am new to VW, and one of the main reasons I migrated to VW (from ACad), was for the setup assistant features.

    I have wasted time trying to understand how it all works etc, and have basically given up trying to fight it.

    Now if I wanna draw a bed on a floorplan, I use the create standard sheets coommand, and add the furn/equip plan sheet. It does mean I have TOO MANY layers and classes etc but what can you do?

    I did write a script to turn all classes on, and that way if I lose an object, at least I can find it again.

    One thing that bugs me the most though, is if I edit one of the standard sheets, then later on have to add another sheet use the create standard sheets command, all the other sheets are reset to the standard. I think there's a workaround for this (layermap thingy), but I'm trying to earn $1,000,000 this year...and mucking 'round isn't helping.

    For the NNa people to consider: The matrix does get VERY large...too large really.

    And I'm sure it would help everyone understand the setup commands if they were more thoroughly described in the user manual.

    Also, we need MORE CONTROL. We don't always want a seperate piece of paper showing furniture! It doesn't hurt the builder to see furniture on his working drawings!

    I note that the setup commands are much improved from VWA9 - Thanks you!

    He's right you know: when you have a model of 2 floors and a basement, the ceiling height/slab thickness on floor 1 does look *wrong*. Compare it with a model of 1 floor and a basement, and then the diagram is self explanatory....

    why can't I change the line thickness of a PIO?

    So if I insert the drawing title object into a blank document, I can adjust the line thickness in the normal, using the attributes pallette.

    But, on some of my drawings, I cannot adjust the line thickness.

    Any ideas? win2k, VWA10.

    Technique; Select the drawing label object, change the line thickness in the attributes pallette.

    Result; in some drawings it changes, in others it does not.

    Why are my Redlines black?

    Thanks for your reply Katie

    Yes the redlines class line is set to red.

    If I select the redline object, the attributes pallette shows pen as "class style", and the color swatch is red - yet the object is definitley black...Any further ideas? - Note that there are other colored lines on the drawing.

    I used your suggestion to class the PIO objects, and it is absolutely perfect of course. I set the door PIO to class Door-Main, and the Window PIO to class Window-Main (VWA10 - I woulda thought this would be done by NNA as part of the architect industry series??).

    Why are my Redlines black?

    Being a relatively new user, I cannot work out why my Redlines (created with the redline tool) are black on the screen. I can't change 'em either.

    Note that other objects are colored correctly.

    Also, why do PIO's created from the Objects Pallette not go into an appropriate class - eg, windows should surely go into the Window-Main class???

    And why, when I create a new wall time, and "assign to existing class", do they not go into the existing class I have assigned 'em.

    "create standard sheets" not working

    I have a drawing underway, and wish to add some extra sheets to it. I have modified the Iso borders but they are all working perfectly, the issue manager works fine etc.

    So I go into FILE | SETUP | DOCUMENT SETUP and ensure that the "use border settings as preferences when sheets are created" is ticked.

    Then I go to FILE | SETUP | CREATE STANDARD SHEETS and I attempt to add the sheet "Site Plan (General)". Use sheet border is ticked. In the sheets to be created dialog, I see all the existing sheets, plus the new one. They all have "w/border".

    So I press OK and the script runs, and removes all my borders from every sheet.

    So what is happening?

    I would love to be able to edit the "issue manager" tool, but of course the script is locked.

    I read in an earlier post that NNA do not want to have to trouble-shoot erros caused by users such as myself, who tend to wreck things, then get confused and blame someone else (ie NNA). Hence locking the supplied scripts.

    So, why not "force" the user to duplicate the locked scripts before editing them - 4 lines of code at most? That way, both NNA and the users get what they want...

    Mysterious thick line in window symbol

    this might be way off track, but try this:

    Set "show lineweight" to on

    Pull the symbol/pio out of the wall

    If there is an "unhealed" wall join visible, heal it

    Reinsert the symbol as it was

    Voila!

    This just worked twice in a row for me, with a mysterious thick line appearing in a door PIO and a window symbol. Both times there was an "unhealed" wall join. Sounds like a bug of sorts

    Viewports

    The analogy is a piece of paper...it's the same size as the final plot will be.

    You "cut holes" in the paper to form the "viewports". You then "look through" the "viewport" to the cad model (building) behind.

    You can specify the scale at which to view the model. If the scale is 1:5 say, then obviously the entire model will not be seen through the viewport. You "pan" the model around so that only portion of the model you wish to print is visible through the viewport. You can can also specify the 3d view.

    I guess one big advantage is the ability to move the viewports around on the sheet without moving the actual model.

    I have noticed that since migrating to VW (from ACAD), I do produce more sheets per project. I think this is because I still haven't become truly comfortable with the multitude of layers and layerlinks required to produce a model.

    my 2 cents:

    Viewports are good for having drawings of different scale on the same sheet, particularly details.

    EG, do a cross section, then lintle detail (over the window), and the footing detail. All three drawings fit easily on the same sheet. No opaque white masks.

    Also, I see a better way of organising elevations (4 per printed sheet): each viewport contains a layerlink to the 3d model, but from a different standard view (front, left, right etc). Any changes to the model automatically update on the elevation sheet.

    But I agree with you guys about not forcing a new paradigm onto experienced users. Viewports would be a great feature for Acad converts though. Note that not all acad users use the viewport functionality. Some are blissfully ignorant, and still produce good drawings.

    The transition to VW10 from Acad is not really any different than VW9. The concepts of layers and 3d/2d are still the same.

    One thing I noted was the VW10 user manual was much better than the VW9 version. Maybe I understood more of the concepts after 4 months of exposure, or it may have better content. I suspect the content has improved.

    I made the switch in May this year, and feel more and more proficient all the time. I have so far done 2 houses, and a museum (albeit a small maritime building)- complete sets of documentation, as well as numerous other small jobs.

    It's working pretty well really, and the standard of presentaion coming out the office is SO MUCH better than what we could squeeze out of ACAD2000.

    what causes runtime erros

    I often get runtime errors editing roofs. I simply haven't got the time to try and reproduce the bug, but I am interested in what a runtime error is.

    Is it caused by a conflict with VW and a device driver?

    Is it code not ported properly from MAC OS?

    What else?

    Any insights would be appreciated.

    Advanced roofing help...please!?

    here's what I would do (in VWA10)

    AEC|create roof from walls

    save your work

    go to top/plan view

    select the roof

    move the mouse toward one of the selction markers at the gable end - the pointer arrow changes to a hand

    left click

    choose "gable end" from the window

    exit

    save your work

    move the mouse arrow to the other end where you want the gable end

    do as above

    save your work

    I've found that it will crash more often than not, so save your work each time you do anythinG!

    There is also a "roof face" command, but u shouldn't need it to do as the picture in the link you posted.

    drawing grid bubbles

    I'm trying to draw a grid bubble in the (-)Y direction (ie down the screen). It looks great until I change anything in the OIP. If I change the text size, the grid lines stop pointing in the x direction, flip 90degress, and start pointing in the Y direction. What gives?

    text scale in VW10

    Thanks both for your help.

    Katie, I would have hoped "Going from 1:10 to 1:50, the text should" ... actually print on paper the same size. This means then that 2.5mm text on the 1:10 layer will be 12.5mm high on the 1:50 layer.

    However, the more I play with this, the more I realise I'm trying to do something which simply isn't possible.
