  1. yes .... exactly like that. Please share some of your knowledge ..... or just send the textrue and I can manipulate the "edit texture" controls. (I'm glad to know it can be done ....)
  2. I can't figure out how to render a light fixture that has translucent panels. That is, if I have light bulb in the middle of a plastic cylinder, I want the light to go through the plastic and illuminate the surroundings, but I also want the plastic cylinder to be 'glowing'. It seems like I can get one or the other, but not both. how do you manipulate the texture settings for the plastic ? (or any other method)
  3. need help ... I made a hybrid symbol door assembly using two PIO doors. After adjusting all the settings and building my own sidelights, I noticed the hybrid symbol acted oddly by having left over remant lines when moving or the symbols didn't align with the walls when inserted. I went back and ungrouped the PIO doors into groups. Thereafter, the symbol looks good and performs as expected, but with one big problem: it won't let me insert it into a wall. I checked the menu bar options for symbol insertion and have right clicked to try and edit the "symbol options" but that editing option no longer appears with the other options to edit 2D component or 3D component. I tried to put some locus points on the ends of the 2D and 3D components, but that make didn't any difference. Any thoughts ?
  4. I have a file with a viewport containing two site plan layers. One layer is a scanned sketch. The other is a drawn plan. When I view both layers together in a viewport, the sketch aligns with the drawing and all is well .... until I go to print it or to export a pdf file image. When printing, one layer rotates about 180 deg and thus, the sketch no longer lines up with the drawn lines. After much frustration, I discovered I could export a jpg image and everything aligns correctly and looks the same as on my monitor. Any suggestions ? is this a known bug with 2013 ?
  5. I'm drawing 3D building images and my viewports seem to be "washed out" or look like they have a solid layer on top of them where the top layer is 30% opaque. The design layer that is the source of the 3D images renders very nicely with proper colors and shadows in RW and OpenGL, but when displayed inside a viewport, the viewport colors are all faded, washed out, diluted. I've tried many of the viewport rendering settings, but can't figure it out. I'm sure there's a solution ... can someone tell me ?
  6. Has anyone else noticed that the VW Service Select portal training videos under "Tips and Tricks" largely malfunction ? I tried them on both Mac and PC computers with different internet providers over several days and they have very inconsistant results. Nearly all of them will not play after you choose to use "full screen" mode. Many of them only play the first 10 seconds or so. Some will play only audio. I notifed tech support, but they either can't fix it or don't care (or both). Can anyone confirm if you are able to play these things in full screen size mode ? (then I can figure out if is just my problem)
  7. Thanks KM ... I knew it was something simple .... but I searched all the preferences and PIO settings for far too long. (The help manual wasn't much help.)
  8. I'm embarrassed to ask for help on this simple issue .... when inserting a door plug-in object into a wall, the wall lines show in the top/plan view (as if to represent a threshold) and I don't want them to show up. How do I get rid of them ? (on the door symbols I make myself, I know how to change the 2D symbol .. but I'm puzzled on the plug in objects.)
  9. Is it possible to make a 3D pdf file from VW 2013 ? Is there some free software that will do this ?
  10. I'm puzzled because I can't find a simple vinyl composition flooring tile in the standard textures libraries for VW13. I need the very basic, common 12" vinyl floor tiles that have been used in the US for 30 years. Can anyone direct me to the proper place ? It appears that all the Forbo textures I find in the VW libraries are all more modern styles. I'm trying to replicate a space built 25 years ago.... and need the old style VCT texture in a non-repeating pattern (if possible)
  11. If my brick veneer walls are horizontal or vertical (in plan) then the brick veneer component hatch is correctly at a 45 degree angle to the wall and it looks good. However, when the walls are at an angle, the hatch is no longer at a 45 deg angle to the wall, and if the wall is at a 45 deg angle, then the hatch becomes straight lines, parallel with the wall. Is there a way to make the component brick hatch always be at a 45 deg angle to the wall ?
  12. on a file I made in VW 2011 that is now converted to VW 2013, when I use the menu command "view > set 3D view" I'll get a perspective view that has a rectangular bounding box that crops the outer limts of the objects. Howver, on brand new files started in VW 2013, the same command generates a perspective image that shows all objects in the file, without a 'cropping border' Is this a bug, ... or a new feature of VW2 2013, .... some preference setting, ... or .... is it that I just don't know how this works ?
  13. I'm just writing to say thanks to the initial response on the night time renders ... it worked ... and now these other comments have taught me a couple things too ....
  14. can anyone tell me how to fix this rendering problem ? I want to show a night time render (with RenderWorks 2013) but many image props render as if they have a full strength of light hitting them, while everything else is properly dark. Any help is appreciated. PS: I tried to attach a jpg image, but couldn't figure out how to do it on this forum page.
  15. Thanks for the help but .... neither solution works well. My 'clients' are mostly other City government employees who do not have 'administrator' priviledges and can not control their software. Every time I try to send them a QT movie they have to contact the IT department to load QT on their computers. At first I thought this was easy but our bureacracy has made it very hard. The other suggestion of software uses a "stiching" program to stich many still images together for VR panoramas. When i 've tried this in the past it often doesn't have good results and besides ... the VR panorama built into VW is so smooth and easy. Any other suggestions ? What I think i need is a convenient way to translate QT movies and VR panoramas into windows media or flash files. I tried one or two programs years ago and they didn't work well. Is there a good free one out there ?
  16. Is there a way to export an animation or a VR panorama without using Quicktime ? (using VW 2013 on a iMac) I often encounter windows users who have difficulty uploading quicktime and therefore can't see my animated fly-throughs. PS: I'd like to do it without buying any additional software. I'd really like to generate Windows media files, but in the few attempts I made, they translated very poorly from QT.
  17. when using an old VW 10 file, converted to VW13, I draw a framing member for a steel beam and immediately upon the second click the steel beam is correctly drawn ... but it is located 285 ft (in both x-y) from where the click was. Any suggestions about this mysterious behavior ? The relocated distance is always the same exactly. PS: on a brand new file, this does not occur... it only happens on this older file. I can not start a new file .... this is a building that is constantly being renovated and this is my "master" file to start the new renovation designs (in 3D).
  18. can anyone confirm this possible bug: when changing the class of a space in the OIP using the "class" field at the top of the OIP, the space may change to the 2D pen/fill attributes of the new class, but the OIP indicates the same class as it started. However, if your use the 'settings' button on the OIP, then change the class in the dialog box, the attribbutes AND the name change in the 'class' field'. This seems to be very inconsistent on my iMac with VW 2013 and gets puzzling when I try to do the same thing with multiple spaces selected. I'm wondering if it could be 'operator error' or if some sort of automatic classing could be interfering.
  19. thank you MichaelK. the first right click gave me a dialog box stating I could not do as you stated ... but then the second try worked just as described. Like all things involving software .... its easy if you know what you're doing.
  20. I haven't been able to solve this simple task and ask for help. If I have a concept with spaces on one layer, and another concept with spaces on a different layer, how to I generate a schedule that shows the areas of the spaces on only one of the layers (whichever layer I pick ) ? ... that is ... as far as I can tell, the schedules detect every space on every layer, and I need some method of turning off / on spaces on any particular layer so they don't show up in the schedule. I know there is a check box in the OIP for an individual space, but I don't want to go in an check/uncheck 30 spaces each time I want a different schedule. I'd like to have 2 separate schedules on two (or more) layers but I can't figure out how to do it. Using VW 2013 on a Mac.
  21. I've noticed some parts show nicely on the original file, but when rendered on the target file they have unexplained textures that are not related to any class or any other thing I can figure out. Editing directly in the DLVP fixes it ... but why should I have to go back and fix it ?
  22. this is a cop-out, but ..... use the 3D image only as a guide, and use 2D tools to fill in the details. In this case, even if you could get the coping correct, how would you represent the roof membrane turned up on the parapet ? You'll still have a very complex problem to solve in 3D. In 2D, no problem. I've resolved myself to making 3D stuff only as a guide for 2D sections. That's my 2 cents. PS: the third and first images look the same to me ....
  23. Thanks for the responses ..... you may have confirmed my thoughts ..... I think VW just plain can't handle what i want to do. The drape surface command was promising at first, but when you get into the details of making it fit to the contours, it looks bumpy if you make too many verticies, and if you don't make enough verticies then it is not accurately mapped. I also found that using many verticies makes it too large and turns rendering times and responsiveness into crap (minutes turn into hours). I'm still playing with this file ... I have no real deadline. I've turned my attention back to using texture beds, but I get very inconsistent results. Often the textures aren't mapped properly and the attribute mapping tool is just plainly unusable. I hope someone at VW is looking at this .....
  24. I want to model a 7 acre park in 3D and decided the best way is to make an image of all the curved walks, mulch, etc, then turn the image into a texture and map it into the 3D DTM. However, it appears all attempts to map the image are unsatisfactory. If I make the image a jpg with high resolution, then VW2012 crashes. At medium resolution jpg, the texture is exceptionally difficult to manipulate on the DTM to get the right size, orientation. If I make the image smaller resolution and in tif format, it works, but the 3D graphics are low resolution and look fuzzy/pixelated/poor (you can't distinguish individual paver bricks, they're just a blur of color). Any suggestions ? I'm beginning to think VW just can't handle this sort of task. I'm using VW2012 on a 27" iMac quad core 2.8 GHz i7 with 4G RAM.
  25. is it possible to make a flemish bond texture with the short 'header' bricks be a darker color brick ? I do not want to use a repeating image 'photo' pattern ... I want to use the randomized shader. Please send one or explain how to do it (I can't figure it out).
