I'm also interested.
Little similar.
I tried to model 3D as I would in Modo.
I wanted to draw a 2D section in Side View first.
Took a 2D image section, flip it vertical, to use it as a guide behind my drawing.
I'don't remember exactly which, but some restrictions held me from doing
this 3D and I went back drawing the section on a 2D ground floor.
Then you can take a Viewport of the section and aline it to a Side View.
But as most Architectural Elements work in 2D Plan + Height setting only,
the section is nothing more like a way to control your heights,
no way to model real 3D.
And I miss a 4 Window View to better understand and control my Architecture.
So I see VW more as 2,5D tool,
and work in Top Plan and use Story settings.
And I'm always in conflict if I should model with more tedious BIM tools,
with the ability to put Windows in Walls and further intelligence,
or better model the fast way with simple cubes only,
like I did in Microstation.

Ah,
I see it's a new feature
"Consolidate Projection and Perspective menus :
The perspective commands have been incorporated into the Projection menu for a more streamlined workflow"
As I did the Renderworks Tutorial again (now 2015),
about the crop is said that it can be found in :
View > Perspective > cropped
Which is now gone in 2015.
Yes, it should not effect standard viewports when in perspective mode
but camera views only.
But I think it would be useful to switch crop on/off from time to time.
Therefor the setting in : File > document settings > 3D
is really far away to reach.
So I vote again for a place in a button above (where the "show rulers" etc.
are, or/and as a checkbox in the Object Info Palette.

Jonathan Pickup from Archoncad has an Introduction to BIM with Vectorworks manual that will help you with the many questions you have posted:
http://learn.archoncad.com/category/pdf_manuals/
I'm sure it's a nice tutorial but it needs subscription.
So not available for me.

How do you do the slabs manually? Just protrude them into the structural part of the wall?
I create slabs by walls, bucket or polygons.
I mean I edit them manually.
As I always lost my connection to walls sooner or later.
But that might have been the auto connect setting which
I usually have off because my wall connections needed to
be done manually most of the case.
But I will try again soon.
-
Have you "auto connect walls" OFF ?
I think that has to be set to ON,
otherwise you will generally loose any connections when moving something.
It's worth to try.
I learned this about walls some weeks ago for the first time.
I also always lost wall slab connections in the past so i do my slabs
manually.
-
It can use all your RAM.
32 Bit could only use 2 (3) GB.
When working with larger files you could reach that limit
and got these error messages.
So it should work now to f.e. export larger IFC models etc.

I have set my 3D default to OpenGL
Clean file, new stair.
When I play and edit that circular stair ...
(It takes a lot of time, get a lot of freezing, App shutdowns
and beachballs by the way)
... the view jumped to a wireframe mode like object editing
mode, but did not get back to OpenGL after saving changes.
This happened again many times even I switched back to GL
manually.
After opening the render mode dropdown which indicated
OpenGL although view in wireframe, and closing without
changing the setting,
and reopening again, now indicating wireframe,
changing to OpenGL is seems to keep OpenGL for a while.
But now and then it jumpes back to wireframe.
But changing stair settings takes now minutes.
-
Yes, if that could work again like in VW 2014 that would be great.
But there seems to be a graphic problem.
When I switched back from (cropped) Camera View back to basic
Iso (perspective mode), my geometry does not show,
the crop frame is there and empty.
Edit :
No, not empty, the geometry is just somewhere else.
-
I agree,
as it is now seems to be the least problematic way.
I see I can't choose a 2014 Lib as it says it is old.
Would be nice if there could be an option to convert that
whole Lib (For custom Libs),
but not a big issue to spend much time on it.
Btw.
If I switch in the resource browser from File to VW Libraries,
Finder Window jumps to the file location, not to the VW library
path.
-
Yes,
sounds logical.
Why should you crop a screen view anyway.
-
Yes, that's the setting I missed
Nevertheless there is at least a frame that shows me the
view borders now.
But I have to switch it explicitly on for camera view.
(that I can "zoom to all" to get a full screen view).
So I vote for an additional switch in the Tool Mode Bar
Most elegant would be a grayed out surrounding like in
Cinema and an auto zoom of the crop frame to (nearly)
full window.
-
That's the perspective crop, normally that should be turned off but it may be on by default in older files.
File > Document Settings > Document Preferences > display > uncheck Cropped Perspective.
Great, thanks.
But is this the feature that would otherwise allow me to
view camera views cropped to the cameras viewing angle ?
(Which I missed so far)

I understand that VW 2012 can't open objects created in VW 2015
with new features. But a Library with simple old wall styles or doors ?
Couldn't older objects be converted on the fly when importing
or at least a hint that the Library needs to be converted to VW XXXX ?
What happens when I convert a normal 2014 file to 2015 ?
F.e. I had problems with 2014 stairs where faces where flipped or
missing, the german developers did a fix for the stair tool which
should be included in VW 2015 Int. now.
Will then my broken stairs be recreated by the new stair tool after
file conversion ?
-
Yes,
64 bit
and
Cocoa (same palette windows),
render setting for 3D views,
stories without fake layers,
non hierarchical classes setting in dropdowns,
HTML 5 help (now I can even read it on 10.7.),
curtain walls,
....
This update solves 80% of my complaints that I had starting with
VW 2014, at one time.
Really Great !

Hi whashisface,
I see your walls are overlapping.
Isn't that a problem when calculating volumes and costs ?
-
I hit the ESC key until it stops
Sometimes there is a lag or the key gets lost.
It's difficult also when trying to rotate the perspektive.
Most of the time the rerender starts before the model
is rotated.
And I don't like much the linear single core function in Apps.
F.e. that you can't open anything else as long as a Dialog like
Organization window is closed.
-
Minotto the Resource Browser can only see resources in its version's files. Thus Vw 2014 can only access Resources in Vw 2014 files and Vw 2015 can only access Resources in Vw 2015 files.
Thanks !
But I don't think that's a good idea.
It's ok for delivered libraries but tedious for workspaces and a real
update breaker if there are longterm projects.
Why not a special *.vwl (VW Library) ending for Libraries and the ability
to read but not convert them to a higher version number,
as it is done with normal older files.
-
Interesting,
what will happen in 2015 if I create custom 2014 libraries ?
-
I have the same issue with that strange frame hiding
the geometry in the view window.
(existing file from 2014)
I also switched back to orthogonal view but would
prefer perspektive mode if it works like in 2014.
Anyway, that new setting for 3D windows is great.
-
Same here. Love the combined/docked palette interface in C4D. I was also excited to see that OS X 10.10 is going to include a "Dark Mode", I have always wanted a darker skin for Vectorworks and that may make it a priority.
The light BURNS!
-
And I realized that way that there is an option to view
alphabetically ordered text only.
-
My first issue,
I can't switch back from full screen mode under OS X 10.7.5
(I am the one who uses spaces on OS X)
If you move your cursor to the top of the screen, the menu bar should pop back down, there should be a blue icon at the top right to disable fullscreen mode. Does that button not appear, or when you click that, fullscreen does not disable?
Seems to work with a smaller file now without problems.
Maybe I had a strange combination between switching the 3 options
to full screen by Icons or Text Menu.
Or, as it needs some time to switch with large files, I didn't wait long
enough.
-
I see.
It looks tedious to even draw a single of those end caps.
Also no rare situation.
-
I'm also interested.
As far as I experienced you can't connect walls with custom end caps
anymore. You have to assign the complete end cap to one wall and
set the other walls to touch the cap.
But I don't know why you need so many custom caps ?
Better to show a screen shot.
If you need standard end caps, these can be set in the wall preferences
insertion options.

Beside being easy,
it should avoid overlapping that it givess reliable mass and cost calculations.
