  1. (Pardon me if I'm misinterpreting the question.) Since the rotate tool doesn't snap to the length of the diagonal (something which it should REALLY DO), try drawing a circle with the center point at your rotational center and the radius at the length of the diagonal line. Then the rotate tool uses the geometry of the circle for snap points.

  2. The notion that you can't have instances of the same symbol that are colored differently has bothered me as well.

In my opinion, what we need is for attributes to have an additional option: BY SYMBOL. This would push attributes of the parent-level symbol onto objects within the symbol that are set to listen. I believe it would be like the '0' layer in AutoCAD, or ByBlock attributes.

Then you could have two instances of the same pipe symbol. One could be set to grey and the other to purple, simply by selecting the symbol instance and changing the fill color in the attributes palette.

This functionality should also work for textures.

We already have By Class. We should also have By Symbol. :)

  3. Also... I've seen many posts on these boards inquiring about the light limit within OpenGL. Might it be helpful for Vectorworks to display a message in the lower-righthand status bar noting that only 8 lights will display? I've seen other helpful messages pop up down there, highlighted in red. (better than an intrusive pop-up)

  4. Speaking of light objects within symbols....

One issue I've run into multiple times is that if you have multiple instances of a symbol that contains a light, and want to turn off ONE of those lights, when you go to the Visualization palette to turn it off (via clicking on checkmark), then ALL instances of that same symbol turn off.

This makes it impossible to have multiple symbol instances where some lights are on and some are off.

Is this working as intended or is this a bug?

(As a workaround, I've found that you can select the instance of the symbol you want to turn off, then in the Object Info Palette set the Light Brightness to 0. The light is still technically 'on' but doesn't produce light).

  5. I'm currently dimensioning objects, working within Annotations of Sheet Layer Viewports. The objects are Auto-Hybrids located on Design Layers. Every few minutes I lose the ability to snap to the geometry of the Auto-Hybrids; I can snap to existing dimensions, view labels, text, etc, but not the object itself.

Closing the file and re-opening solves the problem for a while...

    Anyone else encounter this bug?

  6. In addition to "lower case", "UPPER CASE", and "Title Caps", the Text

Currently the best way to achieve this (assuming your text is currently all caps, for example) is to select "lower case" then manually go through and capitalize the appropriate letters. Or copying and pasting into Word since Word has that functionality...

  7. That makes sense about exported PDFs being one resolution. I wonder if VW could resample any mismatched viewports to match the sheet layer DPI? This would be similar to how currently you can place multiple copies of a Bitmap object, shrink some smaller and stretch some larger (effectively creating objects with different DPIs), then export a single-DPI sheet layer.

    As to why:

When doing a lot of RW renderings in different viewports, I have a single sheet layer where I place all my viewports. This sheet layer is purely for rendering; it's not a printed drafting plate. Among this grid of various viewports I'll often want to render one at a lower DPI as a test to see how changes look before taking the time for a high DPI rendering. This is currently achieved by going to the Navigation palette, clicking on the Sheet Layer tab, right clicking the Render sheet layer, selecting Edit, then typing a new Raster Rendering DPI and clicking OK. This of course changes the DPI for all of the viewports, so if I then have some other viewport that is ready to render at full DPI I have to do all this clicking again to change it back.

Another way I've approached this issue is to have two sheet layers - one low quality and one high quality, and literally moving a viewport back and forth between sheet layers as needed before clicking Update. But having all your renderings scattered across two sheets is disorderly and hard to keep track of...

So having a DPI field in the OIP of raster viewports would allow you to quickly change the DPI of a viewport before updating it. This added efficiency would be one step closer to Vectorworks being a great digital rendering program.

  8. I want each rendered viewport on a sheet layer to have an OIP parameter for DPI, rather than it currently being controlled solely by the entire sheet layer DPI setting. I think the sheet layer DPI functionality should stay in tact as it is, but add the functionality of individual viewports being able to deviate from that.

A viewport should default to the sheet layer DPI (perhaps with a checkbox that says "Use sheet layer DPI"), but if you want that viewport to render at a different DPI you should be able to type it in.

  9. It would be amazing if you get straight verticals even when the camera and look to heights don't match. As said above, that's currently only possible when they're the same.

Even if it's more photographically accurate to incorporate the vertical perspective, sometimes in design renderings I don't want it. For example, working in a proscenium theatre I often want the view to keep the proscenium opening rectilinear even when the camera is angled downward a bit.

There have also been times on more conceptual renderings when I wished I could artificially push the vertical perspective more.

So I suppose that a separate control for vertical perspective would be welcomed?

  10. You should be able to rotate worksheets!

In a current project I'm working on landscape 11x17 but the title block is oriented parallel to the short side. I'm trying to use a worksheet in my title block as a drawing schedule, but I can't rotate it to match the rest of the title block :(

  11. 6. If I send out my PDFs to others, will someone else have trouble printing them if their printers or updated Adobe Readers are not in the clear? Would there be a work-around option I could offer them if those 2 attempts don't work? (I'm worried I would be sending out files that would not be printable to others)

I have a client to whom I was sending PDFs recently, and when they printed the text was all garbled. We didn't know why, and I hadn't seen this thread at the time.

My solution was to export the PDFs again from Vectorworks, this time checking the option to Rasterize Text. Though this may have other disadvantages, it solved the issues we were having since it gives you reliable (though rasterized) text.

  12. I've had similar issues with the textures of scaled symbols either not scaling at all or somehow scaling differently when rendered.

I particularly remember instances when a texture with a transparency map was involved...
