making them readable costs so much time.

I am flip flopping on this... I totally get it...I go on site, sit in a chair and sketch.  By end of day I have usable information (see below) & not a mass of fuzz...

However, every time I watch one of those point cloud scanner videos I think "I need one of those"

I have gotten point clouds from others and I cannot get a clean section from them.

  2. Planing on retiring my Mac Pro Late 2013 and getting the Mac Studio M2.

It says that it can run 5 monitors. (I would like to see the set up)

I run 3 monitors. (I would still like to see the set up)

Anyone have any comments about this?

Obviously the question is, "How does VW work on this compared to my current mac?"

  3. there were two reasons this mapping was useful.

    1. when I made videos of the project and would fly around i did not have to remember what stuff was.  I could just read it as I flew by.

    2.  If VPs were rendered in OpenGL then the labeling would show and i did not have to annotate as much.

I stopped using this approach when i switched over to Onshape as the items are called out in a BOM.

  4. Can it be done? Anything can be done with enough time and money.

How much time and money do you have for this endeavor?

Assuming you have access...LIDAR scan with your phone will get you to a particular quality of model that should work.

    adventures in OnShape.

in short Onshape does all my piping, catch basins (everything you see above) and then i import (which is easy) into VW for placing on the site tying into the Civils Northings & Eastings & elevations.  of course Im not doing any houses nor would i try in Onshape.

for more information please send me a private message.

  6. Helped out an Architectural firm last week.  They are in 2022 but I have both 2023 & 2022 installed but my library is in 2023.  I could do most of the work for the firm but I needed a little help from a VW specialist.  The specialist is on 2023 but can reinstall 2022 if needed...

Did I ever say that there is never a good time to upgrade?

  7. interesting...I think the deadline is the key.  One can recover from any upgrade problem as long as there is time before the deadline hits...

So what about having many projects all with varying deadlines?

I cannot even imagine an architectural office with 5+ projects all referencing the library files.

So when does one push the upgrade button?

I have done freelance with just two offices (me + 2 other independent offices)

I have to contact them and tell them that I plan on upgrading on a specific day.  then i need to see if that works for them.  what is their work load?

bottom line...there is never a good time to upgrade.

  8. I know everyone already knows this but there is never a good time to upgrade.

2022 has this bug where i move something and it crashes every time.  Happened to try it in 2023 and no problems.  So I'm ready to move over to 2023.

One project is new so a move to 2023 should not create any problems. However, another project is at the end and I fear anything an upgrade will introduce into this massive project.

So you say "easy Mike, just do small project in 2023 and the big one keep in 2022"  The problem with all this upgrading is these projects ref in a lot of items from my library.

So I need to make a "2023 library but still keep a 2022 library?" at least until i close out all 2022 projects. (not going to happen)

I tried this about 10 years ago when i worked in the architectural studio. Back when I was brilliant & full of quick fixes.  New projects were started in the new version and any old were kept in the old version...new library & old library were made.  Hero to Zero with in days.  What a mess that was.

The upgrade paradigm has got to go. It is long long over due to be retired.

Surprisingly this upgrade issue does not exist in my mechanical cad world.  Which the founders saw coming before they started the company in 2010.

My gut is telling me that someone in the dark corners of VW saw this coming also.  There always is at least one person who says "hey wait a minute..."  Need to find that person and apologies for not listening to them.  I also need to apologize as I was severe in my criticism when vw gave a sneak peak of vw cloud back then.

So here it is..."To the forward thinking individuals who saw this upgrade nonsense issues back around 2010... I apologize.  I laughed, mocked the idea of cloud cad.  Called you all buffoons (in my mind).  Little did I know what you saw back then I started to realize just a few years ago...VW, Revit, etc are running out of track in the current paradigm.  My deepest apologies"

  9. I've been using Onshape since November 2017 so nearly 6 years.

(I have 2 seats and pay $3000 total)

In those 6 years I have experience no crashes...there were some refresh issues back then but no crashes.  I have found a few bugs over the years but nothing major.

They just released a structural simulator to their product.  This simulator now eliminates the need to get a $5000/year add on simulator package.  I did not have to worry if my hardware could handle this simulator.  Did not spend any time on the tech board asking about graphics cards...etc.  One second you don't have it then pow its now available.

Going to the cloud is more that just "going to the cloud".  All these old paradigms of AEC CAD would need to rethink things from the ground up.  That is why the people who developed Onshape left Solidworks.

Just porting something to the cloud with some universal translator would be problematic.

I do have a few ideas on where I would start with an AEC cloud system. So if there is a "Robert Noyce" in the audience then give me a call.

suddenly stopped glowing…was it something I did? Backtrack, fiddle, fix, all to no joy,  no warning.

I had a similar problem with the section tool...things were not working, spent an 1.5hrs, made a video, sent to tech support...then walked away...started to move things over to Onshape as it was such a catastrophic error.

But I restarted my whole computer & it fixed it.

Was done with 4 key sections by 4pm...

    Why?

    Fair question.

The only way to properly place one room in the correct relationship to another is thru the door opening.  I have found no other way to do this.

So the detail of the door opening (9"x8") clearly locks those two rooms together.

and there are two other rooms off that...so the 9x8 detail helps in locating 3 rooms at that end of the home. So it's important for that alone.

    Exterior dims would have helped.

The marked-up print out could have been used for some over alls but once things get small then we should use some paper...

The issue is fitting in dimensions clearly for others to read.
