Alchemy’s Squam Lake house is a practical case study in selecting and using digital modeling tools to design complex geometries, communicating intent, and achieving their practical execution. The house is metaphorically a box of trees. With an interior entirely of oak, it embraces the spirit of the densely-wooded site. The metaphoric trees bring in light and define spaces, circulation, storage, and a separate boathouse. The house was digitally modeled using BIM software, allowing the house’s envelope and tree forms to be CNC-fabricated. During this course, the BIM and algorithms-aided modeling process will be discussed, as well as the transfer and communication of this information to fabricators. This session will also address the use of panelized construction as a sustainable construction approach, and the roll of BIM in communicating with the design and build team to meet Passive House Institute standards. Learning Objectives: Describe the role of digital modeling and digital fabrication in creating complex geometry to achieve improved daylighting, ventilation, and a connection to the outdoors in the Squam Lake House case study.Describe the process of achieving Passive House Certification using panelized prefabrication techniques to improve energy efficiency and indoor air quality.Analyze the roll of BIM (Building Information Modeling) in integrating Passive House Institute (PHI) energy standards.Summarize the utility of scripted algorithms as an iterative design tool.Register

With project schedules becoming increasingly more compressed, you may be looking for a new workflow that’s efficient, but also doesn’t hinder your creative process. One of the most straightforward ways to make a change in your building design process is by adopting a 3D modeling workflow. Incorporating this method will help you remain creative and meet shorter deadlines. This presentation includes a brief history of what you draw in a building design workflow and compares the similarities and differences between a traditional, 2D workflow with a modern, 3D modeling workflow. Learning Objectives:&nbsp: Compare and contrast 2D drafting and 3D modeling workflows as they pertain to buildings.Define the scope, strengths, and basic principles of 3D modeling using data-rich objects.Discuss various tools and techniques used in developing 3D building models and the associated data.Consider how various software applications can share both geometry and data — increasing the efficiency of your process.Register

Designing landscapes with sustainability in mind is no longer a matter of preference but one of meeting jurisdictional requirements. Site designers are increasingly leaning on design software and online resources to make their current design workflows easier, and also to help meet the new obligations in water-efficient site design. By incorporating the water needs of proposed plants, designing hydrozones for irrigation and calculating water budgets, design applications help you to plan for beautiful landscapes that maximize water efficiency. Attendees will: Learn how to quickly define hydrozones that report water needs and areas.Recognize how documentation time is saved with pre-built MWELO and EPA worksheets that tabulate a project’s Landscape Water Requirement (LWR) / Estimated Total Water Use (ETWU) and compare to its Landscape Water Allowance (LWA) / Maximum Applied Water Allowance (MAWA).Understand design strategies used to incorporate non-potable water collection elements.Recognize how water needs data can be appended to reusable plant symbols, which can quickly fulfill your LEED/SITES/MWELO compliant proposed landscape plan.
