Printing very slow

I am working with vectorworks on a P4 machine running win xp and print through a linux server to a Canon A6100 Printer. when I print a sheet there is a long delay while ,I presume, the print is spooling. During this period I am unable to work with vectorworks as the "now printing 1 of 1" dialogue box is on screen. This period can at times be up to 10 minutes.

It does not appear to be a slow network problem as we are running a 100mbps set up and during this 10 minutes there is a small amount of network activity at the beginning of the print processing, then no activity, then a small amount of activity as the printer begins to print.

Anyone have any suggestions.

If you are using a postscript printer driver, printing time goes up considerably, I'm not however familiar with canon printers, just hp.
