Bendy paths and walls

In a landscape I often want to create curving paths and walls - the curved wall tool does a little but I keep running into a problem with the offset tool. If I create a serpentine shape it cannot cope and gives a message 'Choose another offset value'. Not good enough - can we get this fixed. It seems to come somewhat out of the fact that a polyline insists on an area when I just want it to be a line.
