Ability to assign space bar to 2D select tool.

Markus Barrera-Kolb

Question

As mentioned in the previous post, I'm a newbie, still transitioning from AutoCAD. I also have been using SketchUp a lot, and find that using the space bar to return to the 'default' selection tool is a lot easier and intuitive than using the 'X' key. However, VW doesn't allow you to assign the space bar as a shortcut key. Now that nearly everyone has a wheel mouse (or trackball, in my case), you don't need the space bar for panning anymore. Let us assign it as a user-defined shortcut key!

The space bar will also let you invoke another command transparently such as 2d select.

This means that when you are within a command such as mirror, you can transparently select additional or other objects by holding down space, hitting x, picking the objects, and then releasing space.

Some commands can't be invoked transparently.

As best I can tell, there's no logical architecture underlying the implimenation of all tools...or rather there appears to be several different logics depending on how and when each tool was developed.

Using Vectorworks, you will never get the feeling that core software design decisions were carried to their logical extremes by a battalion of fanatical programmers...

Some things work one way, some another, and some kinda work which is enough to be useful.

And it's the focus on being useful which makes Vectorworks work for me.

For now I'm starting to try to remember the arcane non-mnemonic shortcut keys for various commands.
