Improving rotated text and dimensions

Ken

Question

We know the "drafting rule" for architectural drawings that says vertical text and dimensions should all read from the right. But remember the important addendum?

The "addendum" says that this rule does NOT define vertical as an absolute azimuth-zero on the page. If we use page north as zero (azimuth north) and positive degrees going clockwise, then "vertical" in the better, more artistic, drafting sense should be roughly minus 20 degrees (i.e., the hour hand at about 11:20 on the clock).

Remember this from college drafting class?

The reason is that text and dimensions slightly off from vertical looks better when reading from the right even when it's slightly rotated bottom up. That's how it catches your eye. Beyond that angle, it should flip the other way, as if down is towards the bottom of the page. It's a judgment call for where exactly to flip it, but it's definitely NOT absolute azimuth-zero. I would say it's minus 20 degrees.

Currently, any small rotation to the left triggers the dimension or text to flip. This does NOT look good. It drives me nuts every time I have something rotated slightly left from vertical. While text can be pref-toggled back and forth, dimensions are fixed to follow the machine rule. It's simply not "good drafting" in the traditional sense.

This soft rule is in fact mentioned in several drafting books, including those by Frank Ching.

I wish to see this in VW. I hope I've described it clearly. Comments?
