  1. I have a mac running both Mac and windows. The plugins that I bought for my mac version at one time still work on my PC version. So I believe as for plugins they work both ways. As for workspaces. I believe you can use them you will just need to open them up on the mac side and convert them to that platform. That is the beauty of a Mac.

  2. Ok, I know we aren't really supposed to ask how to do something completely but I need help. I have a very complex roof and I have no idea where to start or even how to begin. I have attached the basic out line of the area to be roofed as well as the floor plan. How do I proceed/start? I know that I should probably do this roof using roof faces, just not sure how to start or where to start. Can someone please help?

  3. Let me just say to everyone that I am by no means bashing VW. It is my first and only choice and will always be. I just want NNA to take note of the things that they see as being small issues really aren't. To many users they are very important concerns and should be given just as much attention as the larger ones. Otherwise keep on trucking NNA, you have created a great product.

  4. I am not just talking about Renderworks. I am talking about the overall price for the upgrade from 2008 to 2009. Since I don?t have renderworks they want $700 ($400 for the upgrade to 2009 and $300 to add renderworks). I can understand the price for adding renderworks, it is the $400 that I have a problem with. Look at all software companies out there. They don?t price their upgrades real high because they want their clients to buy the upgrades. Like I said, I have the Adobe Premium design package and to upgrade to the latest and greatest is only $150. That is a good deal. How many people do you think will do that? My guess everyone! However, everyone is not going to immediately buy the upgrade to VW2009 one, because of the price and two because they know there are going to be issues. My philosophy, lower the upgrade price which gets more people to purchase it, which leads to more feedback, which leads to a more solid product. VW is GREAT, but it could be the BEST with the "Wish Lists" being implemented and the bugs being fixed. This comes from feedback, which is why companies like Adobe and Autodesk are what they are.

  5. Does anyone know of a good place to get General notes info, Roofing info, Framing info,...etc., for your notes sheets. I am talking about pre-drawn cross sections that can be customized per builder.

  6. Here's another question. I know in order to do photorealistic renderings you have to have renderworks, but I have the Architect design version without renderworks. I did not get the Renderworks ad on because I have FormZ. Now why can't they (NNA) give us the capability in the design series to be able to use hatches, easily, in our 3-D models. I have read many responses to this in the forums, but they require some time. Why can't they just add it as a feature? Hatches aren't photorealistic, so I feel they should offer it as a option in any of the design series.

  7. What is the deal with major upgrades being so expensive for VectorWorks. I have FormZ RenderZone Plus which is just as expensive as VectorWorks. However their upgrades are roughly less than half the cost of the upgrade for VectorWorks. I think that they would have more people upgrade if they weren't so expensive. I am being told the upgrade for me is $400. That is crazy. Heck, even Adobe, which I have the premium package, has the upgrade for $199. I think they(NNA) would do everything they could to gain additional customers/clients. However, having such expensive upgrades is a real turn off, especially since we all know there are going to be bugs.

  8. DWood,

My bad, it was actually DWorks, that made the statement in the 3rd post to this thread. I just wanted to clarify his confusion on Vector vs. Raster item. But hopefully my other thoughts helped on this matter about reducing PDF sizes.

  9. D Wood

I've been reading this post and I am confused about the statement you made saying that vector files are larger than image files. It is only when I import props (Raster Images) that my files increase in size. Vector based files are simply text files, and are always smaller in size than a raster based file. One way that I decrease my PDF file size is by optimizing the PDF once it is created. If you have access to Adobe Acrobat (not reader) there is option to "Optimize PDF" which allows you to decrease any raster based images (textures, bump maps,...etc) in your file to a lower resolution. My PDF's that I email to clients range in size from 128k up to 1.5 mb. Now don't get me wrong when you have a vector based file with a lot of vertex points the file can get quite large, but that should not effect you export to a PDF. I usually use a altered (Monitor Preview) setting for my PDF exports and it has been working great and keeps my file size down to a size that can easily be emailed.

Another option is to keep away from all of your textures, bump maps and heavy detail until you are ready to produce final renderings.

  10. So will the font print in the font I select? I tried setting the font before I selected the type tool and it does show correctly while I am typing, but when I hit enter it shows arial.

  11. I have a question about fonts. If I type text and select a custom font like "architect", it previews in that font while I am typing. However, when I hit enter to finish it defaults/previews in arial, why? is there a setting to tell fonts to preview one way and print another?

  12. Ok, so what are the nominal measurements that ray is talking about. Is the 10' the lenght rounded up? What I am trying to show is a roofing framing plan showing the purlins/rafters and ridges. I want to be able to tell the framers a what these measurements are. I could hand measure each of these but I just feel like there is an easier way. Say wanted to do the math, what would be the formula for figuring this out? It has been a while since I have had to do any trig.

  13. Why is it that when I select my walls and tell VW to do a "Wall Framer" it asks me to do a new Mod layer? I set up templates that already have these design layers and corresponding sheet layers added. Should I delete my framing layers in my templates and then have it create them when I do the framing plan? What is the best procedure for this?

  14. What are the steps to export a VW2008 file (3D) so that I can bring it into another 3D modeling program. I have tried but never get the whole model, or I get nothing at all. Can some one please direct me to a tutorial or discussion that explains how to do this. I have VW2008 Architect.
